Navigating Georgia’s New Hands-Free Law

Navigating Georgia’s New Hands-Free Law
By Joanie Iaco

Joanie Iaco, Peacock Automotive

Joanie Iaco

It’s the law. Georgia motorists will have to put down their phones while driving to comply with the new Hands-Free Georgia Act that becomes effective July 1.

The goals of the new law, signed earlier this year by Gov. Nathan Deal, are to lower incidents of distracted driving and rising insurance premiums by prying our eyes and our attention away from cell phones while we’re behind the wheel.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitutionhas reported that highway fatalities rose by one-third in Georgia from 2014-16. While cell-phone use cannot be pinpointed as a cause for this increase, the state Department of Driver Servicesprocessed 3,866 citations for using phones while driving in 2016, up more than 30 percent from 2014.

The costs associated with car crashes differ depending on the injuries sustained, but the average cost for the physical damage to one car is $7,500. If there is a fatality, the financial impact can reach into the millions. Even for non-fatal crashes, total costs can soar into the hundreds of thousands.

The hands-free law doesn’t allow drivers to support any wireless device with any part of their body when they’re behind the wheel unless they’re legally parked. This means that you cannot hold it in your hand, lay it in your lap or hold it against your ear with your shoulder.

While the new law prohibits you from holding your phone while driving, you can still talk and even text as long as you’re using hands-free technology.

You may also use your phone as a GPS, but you must set it up before you begin driving. If you need to change your route, you must be legally parked before you pick up or touch your phone. This does not include being stopped at a light or stop sign. You are only considered legally parked if your vehicle is parked in a parking space, parking lot or driveway.

The new law also prohibits drivers from watching or recording a video and from typing, sending or reading any text-based communication unless legally parked.

The only exceptions to the hands-free law would be if the driver is reporting a traffic accident, medical emergency, fire, crime, delinquent act or hazardous road condition. Law enforcement officers are exempt from the law as long as they are performing their official duties.

The prohibition is considered a primary enforcement law, which means an officer may cite a driver for using a hand-held cell phone without any other traffic offense taking place.

The Governor’s Office of Highway Safetysays the Georgia Department of Public Safetyand local law enforcement may issue warnings as part of the effort to educate and to help motorists adapt to the new law. However, citations can and will be issued starting July 1. Penalties will begin at $50 for a first offense, $100 for a second offense and $150 for three or more violations.

With the passage of the new law, Georgia becomes one of 16 other states, along with the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands, to prohibit drivers from using hand-held cell phones while driving.

In South Carolina, it is illegal for motorists to text and drive, but hand-held cell phone use is still permitted and drivers are allowed to use the GPS feature on their handheld device for navigation purposes.

Peacock Automotive also donated 50 desk chairs and other office items and furniture to Habitat’s ReStore, a retail outlet operated by Habitat for Humanity that receives donations of new and reusable home furnishings, home improvement and construction items, and then provides them for sale at deep discounts to the public. Proceeds from ReStore sales enable Habitat to build safe, decent and affordable houses in Glynn County.

“Our goal to give back to the communities that support us,” said Warner Peacock, president and CEO of Peacock Automotive. “My family and I know the importance of the work both these organizations do and we’re pleased to be able to assist them in their missions.”

The drop-offs were facilitated by Junkluggers of the Coastal Empire, an environmentally friendly junk removal company committed to partnering with local charities in service to the community.

“We are proud to be able to help Peacock Automotive donate to these local organizations,” said Trevor Hess, owner and president of the local franchise. “Our eco-friendly junk removal company’s mission is to reduce landfill waste by donating or recycling the materials we pick up.”

Jaguar Columbia Receives 2017/18 Pride of Jaguar Retailer Excellence Award

Jaguar Columbia Receives 2017/18 Pride of Jaguar Retailer Excellence Award

(COLUMBIA, S.C.) Jaguar Columbia has been honored by Jaguar Land Rover North America as one of the top dealerships in the nation, and a recipient of this year’s Pride of Jaguar Retailer Excellence Award.

Jaguar Columbia

Jaguar Columbia

The Pride of Jaguar and Land Rover Pinnacle Awards are given annually to retailers who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence and to the Jaguar and Land Rover brands. Retailers are selected based on their top performance in core business categories, including customer advocacy, sales, service, and parts.

In 2017, Jaguar Land Rover U.S. sales reached an all-time record with U.S. sales up 9 percent for the two brands combined. For the Land Rover brand, U.S. sales reached 74,739 units and achieved double-digit annual growth for the brand’s flagship model, the Range Rover.

“We want our customers to have the best experience possible when buying or servicing their vehicles, and Jaguar Columbia has gone above and beyond with their customer service experience,” said Warner Peacock, president and CEO of Peacock Automotive, which is the parent company to Jaguar Land Rover Columbia. “We are so proud of their team and offer a huge congratulations to the entire staff of the dealership.”

The Jaguar brand maintained its position among the industry’s growth leaders in the U.S. market with sales up 27 percent from 2016, driven by impressive sales performances of the F-PACE and XE models. The Jaguar F-PACE performance SUV continued to be the brand’s top seller since being launched two years ago.

“We are proud to recognize our leading retailers for their outstanding performance and commitment to the Jaguar and Land Rover brands,” said Joe Eberhardt, president & CEO, Jaguar Land Rover North America. “We achieved another record sales year in the U.S. last year, in large part due to the high-quality service and outstanding ownership experience these retailers provide to our customers every day.”

Since the dealership was purchased in 2014 by Peacock Automotive, Jaguar Columbia has seen an increase in sales of 75%. Jaguar Columbia is one of 16 dealerships to be recognized with the Pride of Jaguar Award, out of 338 retailers across the U.S.

“Our team is so dedicated to serving our customers and community, and this award proves that point,” said Jaguar Columbia Executive General Manager John Guth. “We come to work every day with the goal to have zero dissatisfied customers.”

As part of Peacock Automotive, Jaguar Land Rover Columbia serves Columbia and its surrounding areas from its location at 540 Jamil Rd. Columbia, S.C. 29210. The showroom is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The dealership has a large selection of new and certified pre-owned cars, as well as factory-trained and certified technicians specializing in all aspects of service and care for Jaguar and Land Rover products.

“If you don’t think this disease can touch everyone, believe me, it can,” said Warner Peacock, president and CEO of Peacock Automotive, whose son, Landon Peacock, had a heart incident when he was 21 years old. “My family and I personally know the importance of supporting the mission of this organization.”

Peacock’s Audi Hilton Head dealership was the legacy sponsor for this year’s gala, as it has been for several of the Southern Coast Heart Ball events. The dealership is located at the Peacock Auto Mall on U.S. 278 in Jasper County, S.C.

Landon Peacock also served as the 2018 Open Your Heart chair to bring community and philanthropic leaders together to celebrate the mission of the local group. Landon Peacock Named Open Your Heart Chair of the Southern Coast Heart Ball

Landon Peacock Named Open Your Heart Chair of the Southern Coast Heart Ball
The American Heart Association Celebrates 21st Annual Heart Ball

(JASPER CO.) The American Heart Association is proud to announce Landon Peacock will be the Open Your Heart Chair of the 21st annual Heart Ball of the Southern Coast. The Heart Ball is to be held on Saturday, February 3, 2018, at the Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa.

In his role as Chair, Landon will work diligently to raise funds to fight cardiovascular disease and stroke in our community. This cause is very special to Landon because he experienced a traumatic cardiac event less than a decade ago. Seven years ago on Christmas morning, he was rushed to the hospital where a physician diagnosed him with a 90 percent blockage in his LAD artery. This blockage was later discovered to be caused by a blood clot that was formed through an autoimmune disease called Anti-Phospholipid Syndrome.

Although Landon has fully recovered, he wants to raise awareness that people in our community are at risk of developing heart issues and need the American Heart Association’s help. “The Open Your Heart campaign brings awareness and raises money for the fight against the nation’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers — heart disease and stroke. Any donation received will be used for the fight against such diseases. As someone who has experienced heart issues, I know firsthand that the crucial work done by the American Heart Association can have an impact toward saving lives and improving our community’s health. Together, we can help save the lives of many,” said Landon.
