Faith Equestrian Therapeutic Center Select Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society’s Joe Marchese and WSAV’s Ariella Scalese as Emcees for the 2018 Hearts for Healing Gala on Feb. 9
(SAVANNAH, GA) Joe Marchese, immediate past president of the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society (LDSS) in Savannah, and Ariella Scalese, forecaster for the WSAV Storm Team 3, have been chosen as the emcees for the Hearts for Healing Gala to benefit Faith Equestrian Therapeutic Center. The second annual event will be held on Friday, Feb. 9, at the Tybee Island Wedding Chapel.
Faith Equestrian is a non-profit organization founded to improve the quality of life for children with special needs through therapeutic interaction with horses at the center.
Marchese, who has years of experience in the differently abled community, will help guide the night’s activities, which include dinner, dancing, a silent auction and live music from the John Brackett Quartet.
“I am humbled and honored to be presented with this opportunity,” said Marchese. “As a founding board member of the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society, and as a parent of a child with Down Syndrome I have been exposed to the emotional and cognitive challenges faced by children with different abilities and I love what a difference that Faith Equestrian makes in their lives.”
Scalese graduated from Lehigh University, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Earth and Environmental Science and minored in Mass Communication before coming to Savannah to continue her career in broadcasting. Scalese volunteers for a number of organizations including Faith Equestrian.
“Since moving here in 2016, I made it a goal to find local organizations that I’m passionate about and donating my time to them,” said Scalese. “Faith Equestrian has given me so much more than I could ever give to it, and I’m honored to be named an emcee for their annual gala.”
Faith Equestrian serves children with all types of challenges, including autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, learning disabilities and behavioral disorders. Interaction with the horses allows the students to build strength, develop coordination skills and gain confidence in an outdoor and supportive setting.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for the silent auction; the reception will begin at 7 p.m.

Major League Baseball’s Josh Reddick Visits Bethesda Academy
(SAVANNAH, GA) Major League Baseball’s Josh Reddick, Houston Astros’ Right-Fielder, presented “Pitching Success” to Bethesda Academy Students on Tuesday, Jan. 23.
Reddick was born in Savannah and attended South Effingham High School in Guyton. He previously played for the Boston Red Sox, Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Dodgers. Reddick won a Rawlings Gold Glove Award in 2012 while playing for the Oakland Athletics.

A Caring Alternative to Traditional Junk Removal: How a Business Model Can Support a Nonprofit
(SAVANNAH, GA) Trevor Hess, who owns Junkluggers of the Coastal Empire, will be the keynote speaker at the Working Families Network meeting Thursday, Feb. 1, in Savannah. Hess will discuss the benefits of developing a business model to support nonprofit organizations.
“Our goal is to donate first, recycle next and avoid landfills as much as possible,” Hess said. “We further believe we can help enhance lives in the community through donations.”
Hess and his wife recently opened Junkluggers, which he describes as Savannah’s eco-friendly and caring alternative to traditional junk removal, but already has established partnerships with several local causes and nonprofits, including Park Place Outreach Youth Emergency Shelter and Second Harvest food bank. Plus, the company is committed to presenting monthly donations to local charities.
“We are striving to make more people aware of the services we’re able to provide to nonprofits,” Hess said. “By partnering with Step Up Savannah and the Working Families Network, we now have the outlet to pair items that people don’t want with people who need them.”
“I sent an email to 60 local social service agencies, and we were immediately able to match those goods with a need,” Blair said. “This meeting will provide an avenue for Trevor to talk to the leaders of nonprofits about the services Junkluggers can provide to those organizations. His altruism comes from a genuine place.”
Hess only asks that organizations receiving donated goods provide a donation receipt to the customer within 14 days. So far, he said, he has been able to match needs with donated items from books to furniture and baby clothes to business attire.
The Working Families Network is a program of Step Up Savannah and it too aims to support organizations that provide services to low-income individuals. The collaborative of more than 45 organizations meets on the first Thursday of every other month.

Lead Architect, Felder & Associates, Begins Construction on New Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Pooler
(SAVANNAH, GA) An organization of Catholic church members in the Pooler area, the Pooler Catholic Community, has been raising money for more than two years to build a new facility.
Felder & Associates, chosen as the lead architect for the Corpus Christi Catholic Church project, have led the community to start construction on the new facility and have now broken ground to begin construction.
The Pooler group currently operate as a “worship site” in the Diocese of Savannah. Led by the Rev. Thomas J. Murphy, the community was founded on May 2, 2015, and the first mass was held in a rented space at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church. Murphy also serves as the pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes in Port Wentworth.
The new pastoral multipurpose building will be built on land purchased earlier by the Diocese of Savannah for a new west side parish campus.
“I knew from the very first Mass that our small community would make big things happen within the Catholic community in this town,” Murphy said. “We have all been working so hard to make this construction possible, and I really can’t believe that it’s finally about to happen.”
The $4.2 million project is expected to be complete by the fall of 2018. The new 17,000-square-foot pastoral multipurpose building will be used for worship, pastoral offices and religious education until a sanctuary is built at an unspecified time in the future.
