Enmarket Charity Classic Raises $270,000, Bringing 5-year Total to $1 Million

(SAVANNAH, Ga.) – The Enmarket Charity Classic golf tournament returned to Savannah April 4, raising $270,000 for charity and driving the total raised over Enmarket’s 5-year sponsorship past the $1 million mark.

Achieving that milestone involved the efforts of 271 golfers and 115 companies participating in the 2024 Enmarket Charity Classic.

As in past years, this year’s proceeds will be split evenly between The 200 Club of the Coastal Empire, which is devoted to assisting the spouses and children of the area first responders killed in the line of duty, and Make-A-Wish Georgia, which grants the wishes of seriously ill children.

Sponsorship of the charity tournament is part of Enmarket’s sponsorship of the Club Car Championship, an annual pro golfing tournament at The Landings Club that ran from April 1 through April 7, 2024. The event was staged at the Marshwood and Magnolia courses at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club.

“We are excited to see our impact reach the $1 million milestone with this year’s Enmarket Charity Classic. It took a record-breaking performance from Enmarket and the communities we serve. Charity golf tournaments are a big part of the fundraising landscape in this country and account for $4 billion annually to benefit nonprofits, according to a GolfStatus executive writing for Nonprofit Tech for Good’s website.

Colonial Terminals Announces Acquisition of Buckeye’s Wilmington, NC Terminals

(SAVANNAH, Ga / WILMINGTON, NC) On December 1, 2023, Colonial Terminals, Inc. (CTI), a division of Savannah-based Colonial Group, Inc., acquired a bulk liquid terminal owned and operated by Buckeye Terminals, LLC (Buckeye). The terminal is located on the Cape Fear River and has approximately 550,000 barrels of storage capacity. This facility is adjacent to an existing bulk terminal owned and operated by CTI. The combined terminal complex will have over one million barrels of bulk liquid storage and offer marine, rail, and truck access into the fast-growing Southeastern United States.

“Colonial Terminals is committed to growth in markets that support our team’s ability to deliver the highest levels of service to customers who value supply chain dependability and efficiency,” said Ryan Chandler, president of Colonial Terminals. “This adjacent facility adds a new berth and substantial river frontage to our already large footprint on the Cape Fear River, and we’re eager to offer new capabilities for existing customers as well as attract new customers and products to the market.”

The acquisition increases CTI’s storage infrastructure in Wilmington to more than one million barrels, 70 acres, and over a half mile of river frontage. Products stored at these facilities include industrial chemicals, specialty chemicals, petroleum, and others. CTI will retain all local employees who currently operate the acquired facility.

“Wilmington is a gateway to the growing Southeastern US market, and we believe this acquisition strongly positions our team to support current and new customer growth far into the future,” said Chandler.

With the addition of the new facility, CTI now operates seven terminals, five in Georgia and two in Wilmington, with a total liquid capacity of approximately eight million barrels and a total dry capacity of approximately 200,000 tons of vertical storage, 400,000 square feet of covered flat storage, and significant outside storage acreage. Each terminal is strategically located in close proximity to a world-class container port and provides access to ocean and landside (road and rail) logistics networks, as well as global and regional sourcing and distribution pathways.

Healthy Savannah and Other Local Agencies offering Guidance for Parents and Businesses during National Breastfeeding Month in August

(SAVANNAH, Ga.) In observance of National Breastfeeding Month in August and Black Breastfeeding Week Aug 25-31, Healthy Savannah and other local advocates are working to underscore the need for better corporate and community support of Black breastfeeding mothers, especially those in the workplace.

Healthy Savannah and the YMCA of Coastal Georgia, as administrators of the Centers for Disease Control’s Racial & Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) grant; along with the Chatham County Health Department, Georgia Southern University Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health and Glow Lactation, are offering several events throughout the month. All are free and open to the public:

Glow Lactation will host a peer advocates session at the Armstrong Center in classroom 105 on Georgia Southern University’s Armstrong Campus at 6PM on Tuesday, Aug. 29. This workshop will provide information for community members to advocate and promote breastfeeding throughout the community.

The Department of Health Coastal Health District will host virtual WIC advocate training sessions on the third Friday of each month at 10am. The next session will be August 18th at 10am . The Coastal Health District invites breastfeeding moms, their families and friends, and breastfeeding advocates to join in a World Breastfeeding Week celebration on August 5 from 9-11 a.m. in Savannah. This family-friendly event will be held in Forsyth Park and will include a walk for breastfeeding awareness, information on the benefits of breastfeeding, raffle prizes, and free swag bags while supplies last.

“We are tapping into the 2023 National Breastfeeding Month theme, This is Our Why, to help shine a light on why it is so important to center our conversation on the babies and families who need our advocacy,” said Nandi A. Marshall, DrPH, MPH, CHES, CLC, CDE. “Supporting nursing parents as they return to work is the right thing to do. It benefits the family and community, including their place of employment.”

Marshall is an associate professor and associate dean for Academic Affairs at the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health at Georgia Southern University.

She is leading local efforts funded by the REACH grant to encourage Savannah businesses to adopt breastfeeding-friendly policies and environments and to help them comply with a new law.

The PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act (S. 1658/H.R. 3110), was signed into national law on December 29, 2022. The legislation added several important changes to the Break Time for Nursing Mothers law passed in 2010. The original law required employers to provide reasonable break time and a private, non-bathroom space for breastfeeding employees to pump during the work day but did not cover one out of every four birthing parents of childbearing age.

The updated law extends the right to break time and space to pump at work to millions more workers, including teachers and nurses. It also makes it possible for workers to file a lawsuit to seek monetary remedies if their employer fails to comply and clarifies that pumping time must be paid if an employee is not completely relieved from duty. Marshall and the local advocates are also focused on increasing awareness of the inequities that discourage breastfeeding by Black mothers in Chatham County and identifying opportunities to remove those obstacles, especially in the workplace.

She said the benefits to businesses often include increased retention rates, improved morale, and lower healthcare and insurance costs. Meanwhile, the cost to employers may be little or nothing to convert an empty office or meeting room into a pleasant lactation space.

Organizations that pledge to create policies and provide spaces will be recognized by Healthy Savannah.

“Supporting parents in their nursing journey is the right thing to do, but we also know breastfed and chestfed babies often have fewer stomach and digestive issues and a lower risk for many diseases such as asthma, SIDS and diabetes,” said Shawntay Gadson, MHA, IBCLC. “Giving breastfeeding employees a safe and comfortable lactation space and adequate break time can be vitally important to the wellbeing of workers as well as their children.”

Gadson is a lactation consultant and owner of Glow Lactation Services. She also works in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Memorial and with various programs supported by REACH grant funding. She has first-hand experience in the health value of breastfeeding.

A 2019 CDC report on Racial Disparities in Breastfeeding Initiation and Duration indicated that Black infants had a significantly lower rate of any breastfeeding at age 3 months (58.0%) than did white infants (72.7%); and that at age 6 months, the rates were 44.7% among Black infants and 62.0% among white infants.

Colonial Terminals and Norfolk Southern Partner on Development of $100M Breakbulk Facility

Joint growth opportunity to support 20+ new jobs and further growth of a critical element of the supply chain.

(SAVANNAH, GA) On June 9, 2023, Colonial Terminals, a division of Savannah-based Colonial Group, Inc., acquired 16.7 acres of land sited adjacent to an existing Colonial Terminal riverfront facility and a Norfolk Southern rail facility. The transaction will provide Colonial Terminals the ability to develop breakbulk infrastructure along the Savannah River.

“For nearly a century, Colonial Terminals has built its reputation by delivering world-class product handling services to dry and liquid bulk customers through our intermodal marine terminals,” said Ryan Chandler, president of Colonial Terminals. “Leveraging our strategic infrastructure in partnership with Norfolk Southern to extend our reach into the breakbulk space is a logical next step for our high-service culture.”

Chandler said the project should stimulate the regrowth of business that had been lost in recent years due to Georgia Port Authority’s conversion of its Ocean Terminal facility, and would support further growth in the breakbulk segment as well as provide 20+ local jobs,

The new facility, directly served by Norfolk Southern, should allow in excess of a million tons of throughput and support the development of a new wide-span berth expected to move steel, paper, and other forest products, but capable of handling any general breakbulk cargo. Breakbulk is a common method of moving goods that cannot fit in standard-size shipping containers or cargo bins. Instead, cargo is transported in bags, boxes, crates, drums and barrels, or by other methods.

“At Norfolk Southern, real estate assets are a strategic opportunity that we’re leveraging to drive smart, sustainable growth for our customers and our rail network,” said Vice President of Real Estate and Business Development Kathleen Smith. “This partnership furthers that mission, aligning our organizations to fulfill a critical supply chain need in the Southeast.”

Phase one of the project would see the construction of the berth and refurbishment of the existing warehouse facility, and phase two will support a new rail-served warehouse or outside storage complex. The berth is expected to be permitted in mid-July of 2023, with construction to commence shortly thereafter. The project is expected to be completed in late 2024 and cost more than $100 million.

A QUARTER MILLION RAISED AT ENMARKET CHARITY CLASSIC

(SAVANNAH, Ga.) The Enmarket Charity Classic returned on March 23, raising $250,000 to be split evenly between the 200 Club of the Coastal Empire and Make-A-Wish Georgia.

This was the fourth presentation of the annual Enmarket Charity Classic, which is part of the company’s sponsorship of the Club Car Championship at The Landings Club. More than 280 golfers took part in the charity tournament this year.

Local Advocates Applaud New Legislation Expanding Rights For Lactating Parents To Pump At Work

(SAVANNAH, GA) Representatives of Healthy Savannah, YMCA of Coastal Georgia, Chatham County Health Department, and the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health at Georgia Southern University are applauding new legislation that expands rights for lactating parents to pump at work.

A private room for breastfeeding/chestfeeding travelers is available at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. The space includes a changing table, several outlets, as well as a rocking chair and other small amenities.

The PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act (S. 1658/H.R. 3110), was recently signed into law on December 29, 2022. The new legislation makes several important changes to the Break Time for Nursing Mothers law passed in 2010.

“The original law required employers to provide reasonable break time and a private, non-bathroom space for breastfeeding employees to pump during the work day,” said Nandi A. “I am beyond excited to hear about the passing of the PUMP Act,” Marshall said. “The increased support for lactating parents in the workplace is crucial as we work to support folks on their breastfeeding journey. The PUMP Act is an important step toward health and breast/chestfeeding equity as it removes barriers to access to break time for pumping employees.”

The legislation went into effect immediately when it was signed in December. However, the enforcement provision includes a 120-day delay, making the effective date for that provision April 28, 2023. In addition, there is a 3-year delay in the implementation of the protections for railway workers. Due to significant industry opposition, the law does not apply to flight attendants and pilots.

There are currently a few public breast/chestfeeding spaces in the Savannah area including at the Oglethorpe Mall and a room at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. Marshall and her team, through the REACH grant funded program, are seeking to increase those spaces by assisting local businesses to adopt or strengthen company-wide breastfeeding and lactation space policies.

“While we want all local organizations to be aware of and heed this new legislation, we also want them to know we’re here to assist them in their efforts to provide breast/chestfeeding-friendly spaces, especially for their employees,” said Marshall. “Supporting parents in their nursing journey is not only the right thing to do, but also increases morale, a sense of belonging, and workplace productivity. Science overwhelmingly shows that parents who feed their babies human milk are significantly less likely to miss work in their infant’s first year of life and tend to have higher retention rates, improved morale, and lower healthcare and insurance costs as their children are sick less.”

Enmarket Marketing Manager Melody McCarthy Named to Top Women in Convenience for 2022

(SAVANNAH, GA) Enmarket Marketing Manager Melody McCarthy was among 91 women named “Top Women in Convenience for 2022” by the trade publication Convenience Store News. The honor was announced Oct. 2 in Las Vegas at the annual show staged by the National Association of Convenience Store (NACS), a trade association for the convenience and fuel retailing industry since 1961.

“I am lucky to have great mentors in my career and work for a company that encourages my growth as a female in business,” McCarthy said.

McCarthy joined the Enmarket team in 2017 as social media and content coordinator and was promoted to her current position two years later. She has been directly involved in the design, launch and marketing of Enmarket’s Enjoy Rewards loyalty program, the Enmarket mobile app and enPay, its proprietary payment card. She also serves on a steering committee at Enmarket to vet and mold new ideas and initiatives, as well as taking the lead in planning all corporate events.

This was the ninth year the trade magazine has recognized outstanding women from the convenience store ranks.

Enmarket and Make-A-Wish Georgia Present Disney World Trip to Disney Fan Wish Kid

(SAVANNAH, GA) On October 26, Make-A-Wish Georgia and Enmarket partnered to grant one teenager’s wish of going to the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla.

DeMichael, 13, loves Christmas and Disney World, so it was only fitting Enmarket threw him a Christmas-themed party at its headquarters while surprising him with his wish. His mother said Mickey Mouse is his favorite Disney character.

Enmarket is a large supporter of Make-A-Wish Georgia through the annual Enmarket Charity Classic golf tournament.

“We are so thankful for the generous support of Enmarket as they help us ignite hope for our local wish kids like DeMichael,” said Meghan Lowe, southeast development director for Make-a-Wish Georgia. “We look forward to celebrating more wishes with Enmarket in the future.”

Make-A-Wish Georgia grants wishes of approximately 400 children each year.

“It is an honor for all of us to share this special day with DeMichael and his family and the Make-A-Wish Georgia team,” said Matt Clements, president of Enmarket. “Our hope in helping grant DeMichael’s wish is that he and his family will be able to look to the future with hope and strength.”

DeMichael has cerebral palsy and suffers seizures. He and his family are scheduled to visit Disney World in December.

Government and Community Partners Launch “Know the Facts + Get your Vax” Campaign

SAVANNAH, GA, April 13, 2021- A new program is launching in Savannah and Chatham County to help those who have not yet received a COVID-19 vaccine become more confident regarding the safety of the vaccine, know how to obtain a vaccine and connect to transportation options.

Chatham County, the City of Savannah, Gulfstream Aerospace and the Department of Public Health – Coastal Health District have joined forces with Hospice Savannah, Healthy Savannah and United Way of the Coastal Empire to offer this free assistance to Coastal area residents, in particular those who may have concerns about the vaccine.

Representatives of the City of Savannah’s 311 helplines will be standing by to answer questions callers may have about vaccines and how they can receive one. They can assist with setting up a vaccine appointment and arranging free transportation to the state’s Mass Vaccination site at Gulfstream.
There is no charge for this assistance or for the vaccine itself.

The newly-opened vaccination site at Armstrong Center at 13040 Abercorn St. in Savannah is accepting walk-ins as well as appointments and is provided in collaboration Gulfstream, Georgia Southern University and SouthCoast Health. The site will be open for vaccinations on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-5 p.m.

“In this pandemic crisis, community partners have come together to make sure that all residents have the opportunity to get vaccinated,” said Paula Kreissler, Executive Director of Healthy Savannah and the Program Coordinator for Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health grant awarded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “This collaborative effort will ensure that all folks have access to a vaccine and can get a free ride to a vaccine site if they don’t have transportation.”

Hospice Savannah recently moved its vaccine clinic location to the Savannah Civic Center to be more convenient and accessible for a greater number of citizens. Located at 301 W. Oglethorpe Avenue, the Civic Center is open for walk-up vaccines Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in addition to the COVID-19 testing it now offers. The State’s mass vaccination site at Gulfstream is open five days a week from Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
