Leadership Southeast Georgia Launches 2020 Program in Glynn County with Study of Natural Resources

(GLYNN COUNTY, GA) The 28 members of Leadership Southeast Georgia’s (LSEGA) class of 2020 launched their first session with a close look at the coastal region’s natural resources in Brunswick, Ga. and on Little St. Simons Island.

The leadership program draws together business and civic influencers from throughout Georgia’s 10-county coastal region to offer an in-depth look at the region’s challenges and assets. Members of the class also benefit from networking opportunities designed to boost collaboration and cooperation throughout the region.

Heard Galis, one of two principals at Galis/Stewart Insurance in Brunswick’s Historic District, was the session coordinator for the first of the five weekends. He graduated from the LSEGA program in 2017.

The session began with a shrimp boat excursion in the waters off Brunswick. Led by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) staff, participants received a first-hand look at the fruits of Georgia’s traditional shrimp industry, as well as the barriers it faces. The class learned about the many ways our Georgia coastline is unique from the nationally recognized conservation efforts to the biology itself. Professionals at DNR also reviewed critical issues facing the region’s beloved coast and explored solutions such as rainwater capture, living shorelines and habitat restoration.

That afternoon, the group traveled by ferry to Little St. Simons Island, where the remainder of the three-day session was held. The class spent this time on the island between classroom sessions and outdoor activities that included a natural resources scavenger hunt.

“Little St. Simons Island is the perfect setting for the first session,” said Brynn Grant, chair of the LSEGA board of directors. “A bit of isolation on one of Georgia’s glorious barrier islands is a great backdrop for class members to get to know one another and begin developing the relationships that make the program so strong year after year.”

“Visiting important but seldom toured sites vital to our region’s diverse economy is a major part of Leadership Southeast Georgia’s curriculum, and we invite top-notch speakers from the state and local levels,” said Brynn Grant, chair of the LSEGA Board of Directors. “The participants even have ‘homework’ in the form of a regional development proposal in an area of focus about which they are most passionate.”

“Maybe the most important aspect,” added Lee Beckmann, immediate past chairman of the Board, “is the opportunity to network with one’s peers while learning more about how interconnected and essential every county’s prosperity is in this region.”

(SAVANNAH, GA) Leadership Southeast Georgia (LSEGA), an innovative leadership program serving a 10-county area of southeast Georgia, has announced its Board of Directors. Brynn Grant now chairs the board, assuming the role filled previously by Lee Beckmann of the Georgia Ports Authority.

Grant is the chief operating officer of the Savannah Economic Development Authority, where she has been on staff for more than 18 years. COO since 2013, Brynn also serves as vice president of the World Trade Center of Savannah, a role she has held since the organization was launched in 2011. The Liberty County native holds a journalism degree from the University of Georgia and is a graduate of Leadership Savannah, Leadership Southeast Georgia and Leadership Georgia.

LSEGA’s new vice-chairman is Jared Downs with the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce. He, too, is a product of the program he now helps lead — in addition to completing the Leadership Georgia program in 2019, he and his wife Kathryn graduated from LSEGA in 2015 and 2016 respectively, and Jared participated in Leadership Savannah in 2008.

Leadership Southeast Georgia Calls For Nominations for 2020 Leadership Training Program

(SOUTHEAST GA) Leadership Southeast Georgia, a leadership development program for professionals in a 10-county coastal region, is calling for nominations for the class of 2020.

Leadership Southeast Georgia

The program fosters relationships among leaders in the region and offers professional development related to critical leadership skills and issues such as conflict resolution, self-awareness, communication and strategic thinking.

“This program attracts and connects seasoned civic and business leaders from the communities throughout southeast Georgia in an effort to strengthen leadership overall in our region,” said Brynn Grant, recently elected Chair of the Leadership Southeast Georgia board of directors.

Applicants may self-nominate or be nominated by Leadership Southeast Georgia alumni, their employers or community leaders. Residents of Bryan, Bulloch, Camden, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long, McIntosh and Screven counties are eligible. Nominations should be submitted on the Leadership Southeast Georgia website, http://www.lsega.com/nominate/

The selection process is competitive and ensures a diverse mix of members from each county, culture, race and gender. Numerous factors will be taken into consideration for each candidate and requirements for each candidate include:

• Must live or work in the county from which he or she applies;
• Must be willing to serve their community and region;
• Must be open to growing as a professional;
• Must still and always be eager to learn;
• Must participate and work well in group activities;
• Must be professional, motivated and prompt.

The program is held over five weekends during a five-month period beginning in February and ending in June. Each session takes place in a different county. Since 1999, the program has produced sixteen graduating classes with over 350 alumni.

The selection committee is comprised of Leadership Southeast Georgia board members.

Leadership Southeast Georgia Graduates Class of 2019 After Studying Healthy Communities and Infrastructure in Chatham County

(SAVANNAH, GEORGIA) Twenty-five business and civic leaders from 10 southeast Georgia counties graduated from the 2019 session of Leadership Southeast Georgia (LSEGA), wrapping up with a session in Chatham County.

“We’ve put this group through the paces, with sessions that ranged from tours of the nuclear submarine base in St. Mary’s to a working farm outside of Statesboro,” said Lee Beckmann, a Georgia Ports Authority official who has served as chairman of the leadership group for the past two years. “We had professionally led sessions on essential topics such as leadership styles and communication. Still, the most important opportunity was that of getting to know classmates, and the most powerful message was the overall interconnectedness of our coastal communities.”

The five-month program, which is in its 20th year, is designed to connect and inspire engaged community leaders to improve the overall quality of life in Coastal Georgia.

The group’s schedule for 2019 included stops in Glynn, Bulloch, Camden, Bryan and Liberty counties before the final session in Chatham. Stops were chosen for their ability to give unique perspectives on key topics that included natural resources, education, agriculture, military impact, disaster preparedness and economic development.

The group’s fifth and final session included discussions of health and infrastructure, featuring tours of ongoing projects in Savannah, the Waters Professional Health Services Building on the Armstrong campus of Georgia Southern University, and the Georgia Ports Authority as well as Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport.

They also heard a presentation on the Savannah Economic Development Authority and World Trade Center Savannah before hearing the keynote presentation from Lt. Col. Kenneth Dwyer, Hunter Army Airfield Garrison commander.

The class was then presented their graduation plaques.

(RICHMOND HILL / MIDWAY, GA) Leadership Southeast Georgia (LSEGA) members received a thorough grounding in economic development during the group’s fourth session, which took place in Bryan and Liberty Counties.

“We’re closing in on graduation for the LSEGA Class of 2019, and this was one of our most intense, informative sessions of the entire program,” said Lee Beckmann, chairman of the group. “We talked with everyone from state and local officials to real estate developers about the factors that drive a decision to locate or grow in our area.”

The session began in Richmond Hill with greetings from Assistant City Manager Scott Allison; City Councilwoman Tara Baraniak; and Bryan County Commission Chairman Carter Infinger.

From there, the group visited the Daniel Defense manufacturing facility in Black Creek, GA, where they heard from owner, Marty Daniel, about how the company wound up in the newest location of Daniel Defense and how the building is designed for future growth. Daniel was joined by Sean Register, vice chairman of the Development Authority of Bryan County, and Alyce Thornhill, now of the Georgia Lottery and previously with the Georgia Department of Economic Development, who focused on the factors associated with attracting businesses to build in the community.

Other highlights included:

  • Lunch with Bryan County Schools Superintendent Dr. Paul Brooksher, who discussed the relationship between the school district and growth in the housing market.
  • A meeting with Joel Smoker, CEO of YMCA of Coastal Georgia, to discuss the nonprofit perspective of economic development and the realities of poverty statistics in the region.
  • An overview of joint development efforts by officials from Bryan, Effingham, Bulloch and Chatham Counties including Anna Chafin, Benjy Thompson, Jessica Hood and regional economic development representatives from Georgia Power and the Georgia Department of Economic Development, Jason Coley and Mary-Kathryn Griffin respectively.
  • A discussion of the history of Richmond Hill and impact of tourism in Bryan County followed by a bus tour of the Ford Plantation.
  • A discussion on the impact of the film industry in coastal Georgia led by Brynn Grant of the Savannah Economic Development Authority.

The group began its second day hearing from Leah Poole, CEO of the Liberty County Chamber of Commerce and CVB, and Jennifer Darsey of the United Way of the Coastal Empire.

Morning sessions included Bill Cunningham of Raydient Places + Properties and Scott Allison from the city of Richmond Hill, who focused on public/private partnerships and their role in economic development, as well as, Ron Tolley, CEO of the Liberty County Development Authority, who led a case study on industrial park planning.

Other officials joined the group mid-morning to discuss economic development and public policy. On hand were Chris Nunn, Department of Community Affairs Commissioner; State Rep. Ron Stephens, chair of the Georgia House Economic Development and Tourism Committee; Joe Marinelli, president of Visit Savannah; along with Stacy Watson, director of economic and industrial development for the Georgia Ports Authority.

Georgia Hospice Care Announces New Website Designed by Speros

(SAVANNAH, GA) GHC(formally Georgia Hospice Care) is pleased to announce the launch of a newly designed website —http://ghcholdings.com/— for the hospice provider in Georgia and South Carolina. The new site was adopted to transition the company’s Georgia branding into a name that would enable mulit-state use. Additionally, the company was seeking to enhance capabilities of the website for recruiting and raising the visibility of their non-profit 501c GHCFoundation for donations to support the companies charitable activities.

The design took approximately eight weeks to create and implement the new site. Designed by Speros, a full-service technology company headquartered in Savannah, the site features user-friendly navigation and a clean, professional design.

“The primary goal was to create a navigation scheme that made the site easy to use and informative,” said Lauren Dingus, web and graphics designer for Speros. “The group also needed a website that was interactive to include online forms, employment opportunities and a means for donations.”

GHCcoordinated the launch of the new website to coincide with the expansion of their hospice services into South Carolina.

“We enjoyed the process of working with Sperosand are thrilled with all aspects of the new website,” said GHCCFO and COO Kevin Gierc. “Our previous site was static with no interactive elements. This is a vast improvement for the families we serve.”

This year, the donation was increased by $500, for a total of $2,000, which will be used to support the growing needs of the House and their residents.

He grew up in Statesboro and graduated from Ogeechee Tech in 2018 with an associate’s degree in IT. He also has completed an internship at Digital Office Equipment in Statesboro.

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Savannah Area Republican Women will hold the second annual Ladies, Guns and Ammo event on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Savannah Golf Club, located at 1661 E. President St. The event is intended to instruct women on the laws associated with handguns and proper safety protocols.

Rachel Campos-Duffy will be the featured keynote speaker for the luncheon. Campos-Duffy, the wife of Wisconsin Congressman Sean Duffy, is a FOX News and FOX Business Contributor and a recurring guest host on hit shows, FOX & Friends and Outnumbered. She is a published author, communications consultant and television personality. Her presentation will focus on political analysis and culture.

There will also be two instructional classes available for participants. Sheriff John Wilcher has partnered with the Savannah Area Republican Women to provide instruction on gun rules/regulations, safety classes and shooting range practice at the Chatham County Sheriff’s Training Facility. Classes are limited to 60 participants. Guests are free to bring their own handgun or one will be provided.

“This event gives our community an incredible and unique opportunity to learn about handgun safety and firearm regulations while bringing attention to the Constitution’s First Amendment which provides freedom of speech as well as freedom to worship, freedom of the press, the right of the people to peaceably assemble and the 2nd Amendment which gives the right of free people to keep and bear arms,” said Marolyn Overton, president of Savannah Area Republican Women. “We can’t thank Sheriff John Wilcher enough for volunteering his time to teach these critical lessons. We are also ecstatic to welcome Rachel to this year’s event as our guest speaker. Her experience and talent offer so much to our audience.”

Tickets for the safety classes, shooting range practice and luncheon are $95; for the luncheon only, tickets are $45. The lunch is open to both men and women but is limited to 150 guests.

Savannah Area Republican Women will hold a raffle for multiple handguns and other items during the event. Winners do not need to be present to claim their prize. Raffle tickets are $25 each or five for $100. There are also t-shirts available for $20.

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Technology Association of Georgia has announced that Speros, a full-service technology company in Savannah, won Most Points Per Employee and Total Points for the Savannah area in the 3rd annual Bytes for Bites— a two-week fund and food drive competition benefitting Georgia food banks.

Sponsored by the Georgia Food Bank Association, the goal of Bytes for Bites is to help children in food-insecure homes during the summertime when children no longer have access to free or reduced-cost school meals. According to their website, more than 1 in every 4 Georgia kids at risk for hunger.

Competing against two other technology companies in town, Speros was recognized as the winner for the Savannah area. “We used social media and videos to help gain community support,” said Lauren Dingus, the Director of Web Design and Marketing at Speros. “The response we received from our partners, clients and followers was overwhelming. We truly appreciate everyone’s help to make this a success.”

In total, the Georgia Food Bank Association reported nearly $70,000 raised and over 9,000 pounds of food collected in this year’s statewide competition, which is twice as much food as last year.

How to Handle Telephone Hold Times in Your Business

Prior to the 1950’s, making a phone call without the assistance of an operator was unheard of. In order to make a call you had to wait on hold until an operator connected you to your party. After the introduction of the North American Numbering Plan in the United States, and similar systems in Europe, we have been able to direct dial anyone we wish to call.

Despite this, waiting on hold is still very much a part of our lives. Time magazine reports that a survey commissioned by TalkTo found that Americans spend 13 hours per year on hold. Being on hold is now an unwelcome interruption during most customer service calls. Here are some considerations to ensure your customers remain on the line.

Live Answer vs Auto Attendant

Ideally, you will answers all calls live, however, not every business can do this. If you use an auto attendant, make sure your customers can reach a person after one or two menus. This will improve their opinion of your customer service.

Music on Hold

Hold music has the benefit of easing a customer’s frustration while also making their wait-time seem shorter. Pick hold music that reflects your brand, is relatable to your customers, and is updated regularly. Be aware that you cannot use a radio station or streaming music service for your hold music. You will be required to comply with ASCAP regulations and possibly pay licensing fees. Your phone system may come with pre-programmed hold music, however music that is too simple and generic may not keep your customers on the line.

Messages on Hold

Hold messages offer you an opportunity to educate new and existing customers about products, services, and specials. Surveys have shown that 88% of callers prefer messages on hold to any other hold option, with 16–20% of those callers making a purchase based on those messages. Utilizing hold messages can be appropriate for any business that provides goods or services to customers at their home or business, in store, through phone orders, or online. You can arrange to have custom messages on hold created for your business through your phone system provider.

What not to do

Having a hold strategy is important, but some businesses place their customers on hold to complete silence. According to recent surveys, 55% of callers placed on a silent hold hung up. You should also avoid using the ubiquitous “your call is important to us” message. This will challenge your credibility if customers experience long hold times. Finally, don’t interrupt your music on hold with messages. If you wish to use a combination of messages and music, make sure your messages play during a transition.

Remember, being kept on hold is an annoying inconvenience for customers. Whether you need to look up information related to their account, toggle between another call, or transfer them to another party, try to keep their time on hold as brief and productive as possible.
