Seimitsu Announces Commitment to Growing Global Cybersecurity Success during Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2023

Now in its 20th year, Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2023 is highlighting the growing importance of cybersecurity in our daily lives and encouraging individuals and businesses to take important cybersecurity steps to stay safe online.

(SAVANNAH, GA) Seimitsu announces its commitment to cybersecurity education by participating in the 20th Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Founded in 2004, Cybersecurity Awareness Month, held each October, is the world’s foremost initiative aimed at promoting cybersecurity awareness and best practices. Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a collaborative effort among businesses, government agencies, colleges and universities, associations, nonprofit organizations, tribal communities, and individuals committed to educating others on online safety.

Scott Scheidt, Seimitsu Chief Security Officer

“The threat landscape faced by small and medium sized businesses is bigger than ever”, says Scott Scheidt, Seimitsu Chief Security Officer. “The need for high-grade affordable technology services has never been greater. We must also have education and threat awareness for owners and workers so they can grow organizational cyber hygiene to better absorb any issues they may face while working on the core activities of their own respective organizations. We are honored to be a part of this year’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month outreach and look forward to helping to strengthen the businesses of Savannah and the Low Country.”

From mobile to connected home devices, technology is deeply intertwined with our lives. And while the evolution of technology accelerates, cybercriminals are working just as hard to find ways to compromise technology and disrupt personal and business life. For twenty Octobers and counting, Cybersecurity Awareness Month aims to highlight some of the emerging challenges that exist in the world of cybersecurity today and provide straightforward actionable guidance that anyone can follow to create a safe and secure digital world for themselves and their loved ones.

Starting this year, the new theme of Cybersecurity Awareness Month is Secure Our World, with the main messaging revolving around four key cybersecurity best practices:
1. Understanding the benefits of using a password manager and dispelling existing myths around password manager security and ease of use.
2. Turning on multifactor authentication on personal devices and business networks.
3. Recognizing and reporting phishing – still one of the primary threat actions used by cybercriminals today.
4. Installing updates on a regular basis and turning on automated updates.
Cybersecurity Awareness Month continues to build momentum and impact with the goal of providing everyone with the information they need to stay safer and more secure online. Seimitsu is proud to support this far-reaching online safety awareness and education initiative which is co-managed by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the National Cybersecurity Alliance.

Seimitsu Assists Financial Institutions in Preparing for June 9 FTC Compliance Deadline

New FTC rule goes into effect broadening the definition and responsibilities of financial institutions.

(SAVANNAH, GA) Savannah area financial institutions are facing an imminent deadline to comply with a new Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Safeguards Rule. Seimitsu Corp., the Savannah-based business specializing in IT managed services and high-speed broadband fiber services, is standing by to assist applicable businesses with compliance requirements in advance of the June 9 deadline.

“The FTC has broadened the definition of a ‘financial institution’ to include businesses from auto dealers to real estate appraisers and more,” said Sam Cook, Seimitsu president and CEO. “The details of the new law require those businesses to have a designated security officer – internal or external – who is responsible to design, maintain and enforce information security.

“The new rules define financial institutions as any institution the business of which is engaging in an activity that is financial in nature or incidental to such financial activities as described in section 4(k) of the Bank Holding Company Act of 1956, 12 U.S.C. 1843(k)”, said retired Lt. Col. Scott Scheidt, chief security officer for Seimitsu. “An institution that is significantly engaged in financial activities, or significantly engaged in activities incidental to such financial activities, is a financial institution.”

Scott Scheidt, chief security officer for Seimitsu

Examples of newly defined financial institutions include mortgage lenders, mortgage brokers, motor vehicle dealers, payday lenders, finance companies, account servicers, check cashing companies, wire transferors, collection agencies, credit counselors and other financial advisors, tax preparation firms, non-federally insured credit unions, and investment advisors that aren’t required to register with the SEC.

In addition to requiring financial institutions to have a designated security officer, the law also stipulates those businesses must be able to identify security risks to customer information and maintain a written risk assessment plan to mitigate those risks. It also requires the implementation of safeguards as well as regular security training, testing, assessments, evaluation and reporting.

“If you aren’t sure if your business is covered by the new rule, we can help,” said Scheidt. “Seimitsu is positioned to provide consultation and support in understanding the FTC’s expectations and meeting its requirements. The new law is clear in its purpose to strengthen the data security safeguards that covered companies must put in place to protect customers’ personal information.”

According to Scheidt, cyber attacks occur every 39 seconds and can cause catastrophic loss of revenue and client trust for businesses big and small. Restoration of services and client confidence following a cyber attack can also be extensive and expensive.

Seimitsu Presents Free Cyber Security Workshop in Conjunction with the City of Savannah’s Entrepreneurial Center and SCORE

(SAVANNAH, GA) Seimitsu will present a free virtual workshop on Thursday, October 6 to help small business owners learn about cyber security threats and protection. The one-hour ZOOM class will be hosted by the City of Savannah’s Entrepreneurial Center and SCORE and will be held from noon to 1 p.m.

Leading the session will be retired Lt. Col. Scott Scheidt, chief security officer for Seimitsu, a family-owned IT and high-speed broadband business established in Savannah 38 years ago.

Retired Lt. Col. Scott Scheidt, chief security officer for Seimitsu

His presentation, entitled “Protecting Your Business Through a Strong Cybersecurity Posture,” is designed to help business owners:
• discern if their information is on the dark web.
• understand the cost of a cyber breach.
• discover different ways the organization may be at risk.
• learn the measures to take to better protect their organizations for clients as well as in-house and remote workforce members.

“Cyber attacks occur every 39 seconds and as a small business you need to protect yourself, your staff and your clients,” said Scheidt. “Business owners work endlessly to build the trust of their clients and employees and if there is a security breach of private information, there is nothing more grounding than having to send out a mass email to all of your clients and employees that there was a breach of security on your client’s private information.”

Scheidt says the ‘clean-up’ of a cyber attack can be costly as well.

“This workshop will walk business owners through ways they can mitigate a potential threat and help them discover areas of vulnerability and exposure to potential threats,” he said.

Seimitsu shares 3 ways to mitigate cyber attacks

One month ago, Russia invaded Ukraine.

Discussions will go on for years to come as to why, and what the outcome will be for all parties involved remains to be seen. But clearly, the result of American businesses and individuals is a greater risk of being ensnared in a cyber attack.

At Seimitsu, our security team is monitoring our clients’ networks and those networks trying to access our clients’ networks for potential nefarious actions that could lead to a cyber attack or data breach.

LTC Scott C. Scheidt, US Army (Retired)                            As Seimitsu’s Chief Security Officer, Scheidt leads the Seimitsu Security Operations Center that provides 24/7/365 cybersecurity support to clients and partners.

Recently, the FBI issued an update that included 140 Russian IP addresses that have generated threat concerns. Seimitsu’s TrueSecure security team is monitoring those addresses as well as any others attempting to engage the networks of the clients and partners we support. However, we also wanted to share some tips for other businesses for whom we are not currently providing security solutions.

The intent is to share some cyber readiness questions that can help small to medium businesses (SMBs) mitigate potential risks.

Do you have an organizational cyber awareness training program? This consists of at least an annual formal training that all employees are required to complete to give the organization a baseline foundation for cyber hygiene. Strong programs should include dark web monitoring of organizational professional emails to know which ones have been in a data breach and the credentials of which can be found on the dark web by cyber criminals. There should also be a strong phishing training component that helps employees practice response to nefarious emails throughout the year and not just during the one-time cyber awareness training. Time invested in such training is time well spent: An IBM survey in 2021 found that it takes an average of 197 days to identify a data breach and another 77 to recover from one. A good cyber awareness training program helps develop your staff into human firewalls. The post-COVID world has left us with a workforce heavily focused on remote work. Many organizations have decided to not return to a fully inhouse staff post-pandemic. This will increase security concerns in organizations because the organizational footprint is increased to include residences of employees or other locations from which staff will be working. Organizational data and that of organizational clients is being managed and worked with offsite from a pre-COVID secured organizational office space. This will make assessing cybersecurity posture beyond the firewall of significant importance. Every endpoint (laptop, desktop, and server) should have a security sensor that is providing a high level of security-monitoring activities to ensure remote workers are operating safely and data is less likely to be compromised. Both the stakes and the cost of a data breach go up with the new remote workplace. According to the 2021 IBM report “Cost of a Data Breach,” the average cost of a data breach was $1.07 million higher where remote work was a factor in causing the breach.Small to medium businesses (SMBs) must review not just the age of the version of applications they are using but also the security posture of the systems that are deployed. With the rollout of Windows 11, there are minimum system security requirements that systems must meet. These include the capability to do a Secure Boot at start-up, as well as having a Trusted Platform Module version 2.0 or higher. These are aspects of your computer that help secure your network and organizational data from the operating system and computer hardware level. This will force SMB technology updates but does not remove the need to also use virtual private network (VPN) connections when conducting business off of the organization’s network for increased security of the data traffic being handled. CompariTech reported in 2021 that a computer without a VPN could undergo an attack more than once a minute on a daily basis. It is very likely that there will be an obvious uptick in cyber incidents over the next few months as the sanctions on Russia increase stress on the regime. SMBs should take a moment to access their cyber readiness posture and adjust cyber hygiene practices to strengthen the organization’s cyber-attack resiliency.

Seimitsu presents Cyber Security Workshop for SCORE

(SAVANNAH, Ga.) SCORE will present a virtual workshop to teach businesses how to protect themselves from cyber-attacks.

The workshop, part of SCORE’s business security series, will be presented Wednesday, April 20, from noon to 1 p.m. Leading the session will be retired Lt. Col. Scott Scheidt, chief security officer for Seimitsu.

LTC Scott C. Scheidt, US Army (Retired) As Seimitsu’s Chief Security Officer, Scheidt leads the Seimitsu Security Operations Center that provides 24/7/365 cybersecurity support to clients and partners.

Seimitsu is a family-owned IT and high-speed broadband business established in Savannah 38 years ago. SCORE Savannah is a volunteer organization in which experienced business executives mentor entrepreneurs.

What drives the need for this workshop? Scheidt says cyberattacks occur in this country every 39 seconds, which works out to more than 2,200 cyberattacks per day.

His presentation, entitled “Protection Through a Strong Cyber Security Posture,” will cover:
*How do you know if your company is protected?
*How do you protect your clients and workforce from costly attacks?
*Is your remote workforce trained and configured properly?

In this workshop, participants will learn how to determine if their information is on the dark web. They will understand the cost of a cyber breach to an organization, and discover the different ways an organization may be at risk. The training will enable them to better protect their organization, clients and workforce members, both in-house and remote.

Registration is required for each workshop. Each workshop is presented virtually via Zoom from noon-1 p.m. For more information and to register, visit: https://savannah.score.org/content/take-workshop-272

Scheidt also leads the Seimitsu TrueSecure Fusion Team (STFT). The STFT team consists of IT and security staff that works to provide 24/7/365 security coverage for clients and partners around the world utilizing industry best practices for risk management and mitigation, physical security, and cybersecurity.

Seimitsu Announces Addition of Cybersecurity Business Division

New Division Signals Response to Demand of the Tech Sector

(SAVANNAH, GA) Seimitsu Corp., the Savannah-based business specializing in IT managed services and high-speed broadband fiber services, has announced the creation of a new cybersecurity business division, providing a strong response to the demand for expert customer-focused digital security services.

“Cybersecurity and fiber are the big issues when it comes to the next wave of technology,” said Sam Cook, Seimitsu president and CEO. “The incursion of malware into daily business operations is growing exponentially, and the costs and overall disruptions of cyber attacks are astounding.”

Cybersecurity, also known as information technology security, is the protection of computer systems and networks from information disclosure and theft of or damage to their hardware, software or electronic data, as well as from the disruption or misdirection of the services they provide.

According to a 2021 study by the Ponemon Institute, it can take nine and a half months to identify and resolve a breach.

Resolving a breach can also be a costly process, but Cook says that the development of a cybersecurity system for a small enterprise business is not particularly expensive. However, it does tend to require a customized approach based on the type of business, how the firm conducts its daily activities and the particular issues which the business faces. For example, privacy issues in the healthcare sector are different than issues a financial institution would face.

“The creative challenge is to develop custom-made cybersecurity programs that are also super affordable, but we also believe strongly in the need to build a strong cybersecurity platform across Savannah and Chatham County,” he said. “This will help organizations such as the Savannah Economic Development Authority and the Chamber of Commerce attract new businesses to our area because we will have something to offer that few cities in the country have.”
