Students Give The Dawn’s Daughter Leadership Academy Two Thumbs Up
Another exciting and powerful journey begins for members of the Dawn’s Daughter Leadership Academy. 60 students from Chatham, Liberty, Bryan, and Effingham Counties recently began the 2018- 2019 session.
The young ladies met at Savannah Christian Preparatory School from June 11th through June 15th. During that week, twenty- three experts from Chatham and Bulloch Counties put on interactive workshops that focused on leadership, financial management, self-esteem and character building, public speaking, goal setting, time management, SAT prep, tips to overcome bullying, and more.
Students have been on cloud nine as they talk about their experiences at the academy. On an anonymous survey, students responded: “Dawn’s Daughter Leadership Academy will give you endless strength in the days when you feel alone, powerless, or helpless. I fondly remember all of the wonderful people who crossed my path. In this wild, random journey of life, I have found the strength to forge my destiny.” “Nothing can be better than this. It was an amazing experience!”
They are excited about continuing the yearlong academy. So is the founder and executive director Dawn Baker. “I cannot even begin to express how overjoyed I am that the young ladies are not only attending the academy, but they are looking forward to it and getting so much out of the experience. In a time when it appears as if young people are only interested in pop culture, electronics and social media, it is refreshing to see that these tenth, eleventh and twelfth graders want to learn about character building and lessons that will help them become successful in their schools and communities now and well into the future.”

The Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire Announces Fifth Annual Wine Women & Shoes Fundraiser Set for May 3
(SAVANNAH, GA) The Fifth Annual Wine Women & Shoes fundraiser will be held on Thursday, May 3 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Savannah, located at 2 W Bay St. This major fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire benefits families of seriously ill and injured children.
“Last year we raised more than $150 thousand and we have worked hard to help make this year’s fundraiser supporting the Ronald McDonald House our best ever,” said Bill Sorochak, executive director. “We are expecting a sell-out crowd of more than 600 guests for a fabulous evening of sip-sational wines, fabulous shopping, charming ‘Shoe Guys’ and savory foods.”
Kicking off at 6:00 p.m., VIP ticket holders will be allowed early access to the Hyatt’s Harborside Room (the glass room on River Street) to peruse items for sale and get first dibs on the coveted Keys-to-the-Closet and Key-to-the-Cellar raffles. Then, at 7:00 p.m., the doors will open for everyone else to join the festivities.
“We say that this event can change your shoes but its real mission is to change lives,” Sorochak added. “One hundred percent of the funds raised in the Coastal Empire stays here to help our residents cope with the stress and expense of daily living while trying to be close and emotionally strong for their child. In 2017, we provided 4,270 family night stays at the Ronald McDonald House. An event like this can provide 1,600 of those family-night stays.”
Sorochak projects proceeds from this year’s Wine Women & Shoes may top previous years due, in part, to the continued support from local McDonald’s restaurant owners and operators as well as the dedication of partners since the event’s inception – Ameris Bank, Dr. Corinne Howington of Low Country Dermatology and Cecilia Russo Marketing.

The mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire is to create, find and support programs that directly enhance the health and well-being of children and families. (SAVANNAH, GA) Help is on the way for women in the Coastal Empire area who are having difficulty advancing their careers. Goodwill of the Coastal Empire, Inc. is one of 45 Goodwill® agencies across the country to take part in an innovative program that provides job training and placement services to women.
The program, known as Beyond Jobs and funded through a $7.7 million grant from the Walmart Foundation, will now create a larger impact by reaching more women who are unemployed or underemployed. This new funding will help broaden the reach of a program that was started in 2010 in five U.S. markets serving 1,342 women, to serving an expected 12,250 women in 49 communities.
“We are very excited to be able to further assist the working women of the Coastal Empire,” said Brenda Pollen, Goodwill of the Coastal Empire’s Director of Workforce Development. “Each woman in the program will receive a complete career assessment including job training, placement services and additional support to help them achieve economic security and advance in their careers.”
Beyond Jobs leverages Goodwill’s holistic approach to job training, placement and family financial support services. Over the 30-month grant period, Goodwill will work with women to provide them the tools to achieve their educational, career and financial goals.
Once participants are placed in jobs, they receive support to retain them, to further their education, and to advance in careers within their chosen industries.

Long-term unemployment among women remains a problem, both locally and nationwide. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, only 26 percent of the women who lost their jobs during the recession have regained them. Last year, more than one out of four women was still looking for work after more than a year of job hunting.
“Not only will this program help to place women, no matter their circumstances, in jobs, it will also give them everything they need to support themselves and their families, in the long term,” said Pollen. “Beyond Jobs fulfills Goodwill’s mission of generating economic opportunities for people who face challenges to finding employment — in this case, women of all backgrounds — to achieve career advancement and financial independence.”
Among the tools provided by the Beyond Jobs program are continued financial education, family strengthening services, early education and child care assistance, and connections to healthy food and nutrition initiatives.
The Beyond Jobs program is a key element in Walmart achieving the goals of its Global Women’s Economic Empowerment Initiative, one of which is to help 200,000 U.S. women from low-income households with workforce readiness through job training, education, career counseling, and mentoring.
