“While it’s important to build strong and healthy bones during childhood and adolescence, adults must protect their bone health too,” Dr. Djekic-Ivankovic observed. “This includes maintaining a calcium-rich diet and keeping physically active to reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Renown for her groundbreaking research in vitamin D intake and the status of reproductive-aged women in her native Serbia and Canada, Dr. Djekic-Ivankovic will share her passion, as well as the latest research and new therapies, particularly those that utilize natural products.

“I am eager to share my findings in this setting, and to be part of a conversation that empowers employers and employees to be better educated about choices that improve their health,” said Dr. Djekic-Ivankovic. “My real interest is in healing with natural methods, such as nutrition, and helping people make the connection between human nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.”

With an extensive background in pharmacology, biochemistry and nutrition, including over 10-years of experience in the design and execution of molecular, preclinical and clinical research studies, Dr. Djekic-Ivankovic currently works at the RI McGill University Health Center in Montreal. It comes as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates nearly 60 percent of employees do not get adequate exercise, and a 2014 article in Corporate Wellness magazine said unhealthy lifestyle choices cause up to 90 percent of healthcare spending cost American businesses more than one trillion dollars a year in lost productivity.

This, McCarthy said, is why workplace wellness programs are more important than ever.

“These programs educate employees on how to feel better on the job, both mentally and physically, but they also foster better work performance and can actually decrease turnover rates,” McCarthy said. “They are a win for employee and employer.”

She said workplace fitness programs also can create an atmosphere of camaraderie, making workers feel more valued and instilling a greater sense of goodwill toward the employer.

McCarthy is a personal trainer and instructor at Memorial Health, Savannah Golf Club, Hunter Army Airfield and the Landings Club. She earned a bachelor of science degree in communications with a health science focus from Georgia Southern Universityand is certified by Interactive Fitness Trainers of America in personal training, aqua aerobics and spin.

(SAVANNAH, GA) ‘Stress and Sleep: The Forgotten Keys to health’ will be the focus of the final presentation of the 2017 Enmarket Encourage Health Education Series on Tuesday, Oct. 24.

Davana Pilczuk, the human performance program manager at Savannah-based Gulfstream Aerospace,
will make the presentation at the Savannah Morning News Auditorium, 1375 Chatham Parkway, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required, as a healthy lunch will be provided.

During the luncheon, the Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia will receive the $1,000 Encourage Health grant. Their program centers on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, a collection of activities and experiences to earn badges, explore the outdoors and complete “Take Action” projects. One program at Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia is the Bronze Star, which is given to a scout who plants a community garden at their school and inspires others to eat healthily.

This organization is one of four local nonprofits selected to receive donations as part of the 2017 lecture series to recognize their efforts in promoting healthy homegrown food by developing gardens at local schools and educating students on basic gardening skills.

This is the fourth year enmarket has partnered with Healthy Savannah, Sandfly Family Dental, Gulfstream Aerospace Corp., Hoist Water, Savannah Morning News, Savannah Magazine and GPB Savannah – WSVH 91.1/WWIO 89.9 to host the Encourage Health Education Series.
