Aging in Place: Ways to Update a House for Staying Long Term

Aging in Place: Ways to Update a House for Staying Long Term
By Sherry Daniel

No one likes to bring up the dreaded move that many of us fear will face us in the future. What am I referring to? Retirement homes.

No matter how improved and comfortable retirement homes may be, there’s nothing quite like living in a home in which you’ve made memories and crafted to suit your personality and needs.

With this in mind, many of our elderly neighbors are choosing to remain in their family homes rather than move to a retirement facility. To make that work smoothly, however, renovations are needed to adjust for an aging individual’s changing needs.

As the CEO and owner of Roto-Rooter Plumbers of Savannah, I notice different trends when we see an influx of specific requests. Lately, we’ve had more and more of our older customers ask for services such as height adjustments, mobility assistance installations and easier methods of accessibility in bathrooms and kitchens.

If you’re considering selling your home and moving to a retirement community, you might want to think about repairs or renovations that could make your home accessible. Below are 10 home plumbing renovations that will improve the accessibility of different parts of your house and allow you to postpone or avoid moving to a retirement home altogether.

1. Install pressure-balanced valves to provide water at steady temperatures regardless of pressure fluctuations in your kitchen and bathrooms.

2. Install grips around the shower, the toilet and your bed. Strategically located grab bars can prevent life-threatening falls. Slip-prevention flooring can help you feel secure as well.

3. Install hand-held, adjustable height, shower heads with a six-foot hose to direct the water where it’s needed.

4. Add a fold-down seat or bench in the shower. Some come with padded backs for extra comfort. Others will have a structure that extends outside the tub for easy entrance and exit.

5. Keep your spaces wide. Keep entryways, hallways and bathroom spaces clear of obstacles and wide enough for a wheelchair or other assistance device.

6. Install a toilet with the necessary height. Having the toilet at the proper height can make an incredible difference in the comfort and safety of your bathroom. A toilet paper holder designed for one-handed changing might be an added bonus.

7. Depending on your needs, a toilet/bidet combination can significantly improve hygiene.

8. Walk-in tubs and roll-in showers are imperative for those with mobility inhibitors. A roll-in shower is a shower stall that has a curb-less entrance and the door (or opening) is a minimum of 36 inches wide.

9. Consider a wheelchair accessible sink that is hung on the wall to leave space for your knees (or wheelchair) beneath a pipe-covering panel to protect your legs. You can also install lever handle faucets or faucets that are pedal controlled.

10. Install adjustable height (or varying height) counter tops with provisions for roll-under access in front of the sink and main counter top.

Taking advantage of these 10 tips can make your bathrooms wheelchair or simply “aging” accessible. Making these renovations can extend the amount of time you can live safely in your family home.

Roto-Rooter Plumbers of Savannah Celebrates 45th Anniversary

Roto-Rooter Plumbers of Savannah Celebrates 45th Anniversary

(SAVANNAH, GA) Roto-Rooter Plumbers of Savannah, a locally owned full-service industrial, commercial and residential plumbing company, is pleased to announce its 45th anniversary of serving customers in Savannah and surrounding areas.

“In 1974, we bought the Roto-Rooter franchise rights in Savannah and 10 nearby counties,” said Sherry Daniel, CEO of Roto-Rooter Plumbers. “Along the way, I learned to love the business side of things and realized this business was my destiny.”

Sherry Daniel, Roto Rooter Plumbers of Savannah

After being a co-owner for 28 years, Daniel came out of semi-retirement during the recession of 2008 to rebuild the business. She would become its sole owner a year later.

Today, Roto-Rooter Plumbers of Savannah has fourteen service trucks and 21 full-time employees, including twelve masterful plumbers with more than 130 years of combined experience. The company also offers career pathways for employees, hiring potential plumbers who are looking to learn the trade, then training them alongside master plumbers.

“I dream one day that this type of service will be here when I am long gone,” said Daniel. “I’m planning for a future where our team members will be able to lead the company forward.”

Daniel also believes in placing the interests of clients above the bottom line. Her business motto is: “Be here tomorrow to stand behind the work we did today.”

“From the person who answers a customer’s initial call, to the plumber or technician who performs the work, I insist that each member of our staff treats each client as our most special customer,” she said.

Daniel also has put her business philosophy to work in Roto-Rooter’s commitment to serving others. From Toys for Tots, to filling the needs of veterans, to supporting a women’s’ shelter, to organizing and supporting blood drives, Daniel has ensured that her company serves the needs of the community.

“We’ve participated in a radiothon for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for the last four years and through that raised $60,000 each year for sick kids,” she said. “We’ve donated thousands of free plumbing services to Park Place Outreach, and we are holding a fundraiser in February of 2019 to benefit the Ronald McDonald House of the Coastal Empire. I’m also excited about a new partnership we’re starting with Dawn Baker and her charity, Dawn’s Daughter, which helps empower young women. We are always looking for new ways to give back to this community that has been so good to us.”

After 45 years at the company’s helm, Daniel finds the prospects of continuing to grow the business both surprising and exciting.

“Over the next few years we will be expanding services, growing into new territories and offering more types of services,” she said. “We will continue developing strategies in water conservation and green technologies as well as investing in researching and coordinating the introduction of new products and processes to southeast Georgia.”

The home, which serves runaway, homeless and at-risk youth ages 11-17, received seven new toilets, a new garbage disposal and a new kitchen faucet.

“We received a call that Roto-Rooter wanted to come by and take a look at our plumbing system to see how they could help,” said Julie Wade, executive director of Park Place Outreach. “As you might imagine with a full house of teenagers, it’s really important to keep plumbing essentials working properly. We are very excited by this partnership.”

Kyle Hagemes with Roto-Rooter Plumbers of Savannah

The home is open 24 hours a day and temporarily houses as many as 12 kids or teenagers at any time. All services are free, including a safe, secure place to stay along with meals and transportation to and from school.

“We didn’t have to think twice when we learned about Park Place’s mission,” said Sherry Daniel, CEO of Roto-Rooter Plumbers. “Plumbing usually isn’t a priority until it has to be.
