Metal Buildings as a Trend

Metal Buildings: Modern Marvels?

By Chris Tilton

Time was, when you heard the words “metal building,” your lip might well curl a bit. The best that could be said was that they were utilitarian. They may have gotten the job done, but they didn’t do it with any style or grace.

It was sort of like your reaction to your least favorite neighbor’s eyesore of a metal yard shed but on a larger scale.

But things change. Bag phones became smartphones. Black-and-white TV became color and then the high definition. Video rental stores became streaming services. And metal buildings became a trend, driven by innovation that drove up demand. Today, a metal building may be the proper option for your new build.

Don’t just take my word for it, look at the statistics. Over the past five years, the structural metal product manufacturing in the US industry has grown to reach revenue of $50 billion in 2019, according to IBISWorld.

Sustainability has a lot to do with this. “Green” building practices are a driving force in today’s construction industry, and it’s kind of hard to beat a material that can be assembled with recycled metal and then be recycled itself decades down the road.

Metal buildings are “green” in more ways than that. Insulated metal panels, or IMPs, are the building blocks for many metal buildings. IMPs sandwich insulating foam between two “skins” of metal panels. Some of this material boasts impressive R-values, which is how we measure the effectiveness of an insulating product. Given Savannah’s climate, that’s a big plus.

Want more eco-features? Some forms of metal roofing reflect the sun’s heat, rather than passing it along into the building beneath. You don’t have to air condition heat that doesn’t get inside in the first place.

Other positive factors are durability and the fact metal buildings are inherently resistant to fire.

Modern manufacturing processes make precise fabrication of IMPs and other components possible. That means when raw materials arrive on the construction site for an intelligently designed metal building, they really aren’t “raw.” They’re ready for the assembly that makes them part of the cohesive building process.

But what about the appearance?

Even with all the plus factors metal buildings have going for them, I’d like to think no one wants to build a homely building, and early generations of metal buildings were just that. The Quonset hut of the World War II era wasn’t a beauty to most of us (although that trademarked product still has its fans today), and its successor buildings tended to be grim metal boxes – sort of soulless filing cabinets for factories and people.

But that’s changed, too. Architects have learned how to work with the new materials, and metal building components come with a versatile selection of shapes, sizes and finishes.

And in color? Well, builders are no longer limited to the dust-colored options of the first generation of metal building components. You know, those vague variations on beige, gray and olive. Instead, the full-color palate is available to play a role in metal buildings making positive design statements.

Metal buildings entered the market as industrial properties, places where utilitarianism was an asset. Today, however, they’re finding their way into properties that house retail or office space, places that depend, to some degree, on the commercial equivalent of curb appeal.

Is metal my favorite? Well, I confess to a certain fondness for the new Livingood’s store in Pooler, Jeff’s Beverage in Richmond Hill and the Preciball USA headquarters, metal buildings that we built in the last two years. It’s the perfect choice for some projects and a good choice for others – but not for all. Any new build project requires careful consideration of all the options, and there’s no cookie-cutter solution.

That said, metal buildings are here to stay, having shed their initial major flaws and picked up numerous refinements.

“Inspire Your Community” Podcast Donates $1000 to Two Local Organizations In Support of Police Sgt. Ansari’s Family

“Inspire Your Community” Podcast Donates $1000 to Two Local Organizations In Support of Police Sgt. Ansari’s Family

(SAVANNAH, GA) Representatives of Pooler Elementary School and the 200 Club were each presented a check for $500 from the founder of the “Inspire Your Community” podcast, in recognition of the support these organizations provided to the families of the late Savannah Police Sgt. Kelvin Ansari, who died after being shot while investigating an armed robbery the Saturday before Mother’s Day.

Chris Tilton, one of two principals at the Dewitt Tilton Group construction firm, founded the “Inspire Your Community” podcast and said that the nominations for both organizations aligned perfectly with the mission of the podcast and supports its motto: “Do Good, See Good, Inspire Others.”

Pooler Elementary School art students worked on a painting that was presented to Sgt. Ansari’s precinct in the Savannah Police Department in memory and honor of him.

Several Pooler Elementary students and faculty members had a personal connection to the slain officer. One teacher is a neighbor of the Ansari family, the art teacher previously taught his children at Groves High School and one student’s father worked with him and was the first officer on the scene.

After hearing the story of the art project, Tilton decided to make Pooler Elementary’s art program the first recipient of the $500 donation he is offering to those whose stories are chosen for the podcast.

“This actually doubles our art budget for the year,” said Art Teacher, Elizabeth Harper. “We honestly didn’t expect to get any recognition for this project. We just wanted to do something for the family.”

In addition to presenting a donation to the Pooler Elementary School art class, Tilton presented a second $500 check to Mark Dana of the 200 Club, which provided immediate financial assistance and support to the family of Sgt. Kelvin Ansari. The 200 Club has also pledged to provide fully paid college and all related expenses to each of Sgt. Ansari’s dependents, including his wife if she decides to pursue a degree, and will help out during holidays, such as sending Mrs. Ansari flowers on Mother’s Day every year.

Chris Tilton (right), co-principal of Dewitt Tilton Group, presents $500 to Mark Dana (left), President of the 200 Club of the Coastal Empire, as part of the Inspire Your Community podcast.

The original intention was to limit the donation to one charity or nonprofit organization per story, but Tilton said this story transcended that guideline.

“We heard about the amazing support the 200 Club committed to providing the Ansari family and felt it was our honor to present them with a second check,” said Tilton. “We hope our gesture will inspire others to donate to these programs as well.”

Meanwhile, the “Inspire Your Community” podcast continues to look for uplifting and inspiring stories from our local community. The Dewitt Tilton Group will donate $300 to a cause of the nominator’s choice for each story chosen for the monthly podcast. To submit story ideas, email DTG.inspire@gmail.com.

The podcast can be accessed at YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play, Stitcher, and everywhere else podcasts can be found. For further information, contact the Dewitt Tilton Group team at DTG.inspire@gmail.com.

Roush’s Delivery Service, founded in 1973, provides expedited less-than-truckload (LTL) and logistics services. Mike Roush is president of the family-owned firm, and Mike Roush Jr. is its general manager. The company experienced a 400% growth over the past four years, thus demanding physical expansion.

“We have to adapt as our clients’ needs change,” said Mike Roush. “Most of our customers now need project-based work, and our new site will equip us to meet those needs in the most effective manner. Yes, we have grown tremendously, but the reason for this expansion is also to better serve our clients.”

The pre-engineered metal building will include 3,500 square feet of heated and cooled office space. The building is dock-high all the way around, and the office portion will be configured as two stories. Translucent light panels along the front and rear will allow natural light into the warehouse. 12 overhead garage doors that vary in size with edge or pit levelers will accommodate most any truck and its load. There is also a concrete ramp into the building from parking level as another means of access for receiving or delivering goods.

“Mike and I were buddies in grade school and high school,” Chris Tilton, one of the principals at Dewitt Tilton, said of the younger Roush. “Who would have thought, back when we were at Benedictine, that we would one day be working together on a $2 million construction project? We appreciate all of our clients, but it is really fun to work with old friends.”

Principal of Dewitt Tilton Group Launches “Inspire Your Community” Podcast to Do Just That

Principal of Dewitt Tilton Group Launches “Inspire Your Community” Podcast to Do Just That

(SAVANNAH, GA) Chris Tilton, one of two principals at the Dewitt Tilton Groupcommercial construction firm, has launched a monthly podcast featuring local stories of inspiration, kindness and positivity, and the company will reward people who help find those stories with a $300 donation to the cause of the nominator’s choice.

A small, heartwarming true story was the spark for “Inspire Your Community Podcast,” Tilton said.

Dewitt Tilton Group Inspire Podcast

“I heard about this guy who was dropping his daughter off at daycare one morning, just something lots of us do every day, and he noticed that the swing on the playground was broken. He didn’t complain about it to the daycare manager; he didn’t ignore the problem. Instead, the following Saturday, on his day off, he drove over and fixed the swing,” said Tilton. “Not a big thing, just seeing a problem and doing something about it.”

Such simple but true stories, Tilton thought, could inspire others to perform random acts of kindness or to act instead of complaining. His response is to launch a monthly podcast to tell true, inspiring stories suggested by members of the community. To encourage people to come forward with stories, the Dewitt Tilton Groupwill donate $300 to the cause of the successful nominator’s choice.

To submit story ideas, email dtg.inspire@gmail.com. One story will be selected each month to be the subject of the podcast, and the nominator of that story will be given the opportunity to designate a charity to receive a $300 donation.

“There are lots of inspirational stories out there, and we hope people will come forward to let us help share them,” Tilton said. “We’re starting now, so we need to hear from people. This is one small way we can all help counteract hate and negativity in the world.”

The podcast can be accessed at YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play, Stitcher, and everywhere else podcasts can be found. View the first episode here, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EgdS0dh9UY.
