Lead Architect, Felder & Associates, Begins Construction on New Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Pooler
(SAVANNAH, GA) An organization of Catholic church members in the Pooler area, the Pooler Catholic Community, has been raising money for more than two years to build a new facility.

Corpus Christi Exterior Rendering
Felder & Associates, chosen as the lead architect for the Corpus Christi Catholic Church project, have led the community to start construction on the new facility and have now broken ground to begin construction.
The Pooler group currently operate as a “worship site” in the Diocese of Savannah. Led by the Rev. Thomas J. Murphy, the community was founded on May 2, 2015, and the first mass was held in a rented space at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church. Murphy also serves as the pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes in Port Wentworth.
The new pastoral multipurpose building will be built on land purchased earlier by the Diocese of Savannah for a new west side parish campus.
“I knew from the very first Mass that our small community would make big things happen within the Catholic community in this town,” Murphy said. “We have all been working so hard to make this construction possible, and I really can’t believe that it’s finally about to happen.”
The $4.2 million project is expected to be complete by the fall of 2018. The new 17,000-square-foot pastoral multipurpose building will be used for worship, pastoral offices and religious education until a sanctuary is built at an unspecified time in the future.
“Projects like this one are always so exciting,” said Brian Felder, founder and managing principal of Felder & Associates. “We will be designing a structure that this group has worked so hard and waited so long to build.”
Felder & Associates specializes in historic preservation, commercial architecture, adaptive reuse architecture, corporate interior design, high-end residential design, green building and neo-traditional building. The firm recently received the Engineering News-Record (ENR) 2017 Award of Merit for their work on the Bouhan Falligant building in downtown Savannah.

Felder & Associates and West Construction Co. Receive ENR Southeast’s 2017 Award of Merit for Bouhan Falligant Building
Felder & Associates and West Construction Co. Receive ENR Southeast’s 2017 Award of Merit for Bouhan Falligant Building
(SAVANNAH, GA) Engineering News-Record (ENR) has selected Felder & Associates, a Savannah architecture and design firm, and West Construction Co. to receive its Southeast Region Award of Merit for the Bouhan Falligant building at 1 West Park Ave. Considered the design and construction industry’s leading publication since the late 1800s, ENR is a weekly magazine that provides engineering and construction news.

(LEFT TO RIGHT) Ryan Claus, Felder & Associates; Matt West, West Construction Co.; Brian Felder, Felder & Associates
Felder served as the design firm for the structure that now anchors the south end of Savannah’s Forsyth Park and is the new home for Savannah’s oldest law firm. ENR recognized the $4.65 million project for being completed ahead of schedule in just nine months despite being impacted by Hurricane Matthew in 2016 during construction.
“As you can imagine, there are at least dozens of entries from all over the region,” said Brian Felder, founder and managing principal. “This is a huge recognition in our world as ENR has been the design and construction industry’s leading publication dating back to the late eighteen-hundreds.”
ENR Southeast selects an independent group of judges to review submitted projects and determine final winners based on the size and scope of the project. This year’s judges reviewed over 90 projects before selecting winners which also includes SunTrust Park (the new Atlanta Braves Stadium), the Clemson University Football Complex, and the University of South Carolina School of Law Building.
West Construction Co. served as the Bouhan Falligant building project’s general contractor with Thomas and Hutton as the civil and structural engineer and Chatham Engineering as the MEP engineer, along with approximately 40 team members representing many trades and professions from across the local region. Working with Felder & Associates, this team helped deliver the project in a timely fashion.
“Receiving recognition from a respected publication like ENR is very rewarding for us, as well as for the team of subcontractors and vendors who worked tirelessly to meet the project’s challenging schedule,” said West Construction Company President Matt West. “We are very proud of the hard work the entire team put into this project, but most importantly we are proud of a successful project and a satisfied client.”
The awards were broken down by geographic region as well as by category. The team’s Award of Merit fell under the “Small Projects” category for construction projects under $10 million.
ENR also acknowledged Felder & Associates’ efforts to work within the constraints of Savannah’s height ordinance and design guidelines in its Landmark Historic District in the building’s design aspects: “Project team members opted for a detailed masonry exterior of brick and cast stone, with an interior featuring energy-efficient HVAC, LED lighting, impact-rated stainless steel entry door, structural steel framing and permeable pavers for parking.”
“One West Park has proven to be the perfect fit for our needs. It offers exceptional office and meeting spaces with state-of-the-art technology, all while fitting in with the surrounding historic neighborhood,” said Lea Holliday, managing partner, Bouhan Falligant. “We look forward to many years serving our clients in this building.”
Featuring Chicago-style architecture, the Bouhan Falligant building was completed one percent under budget and two weeks ahead of schedule.
“We’re really excited about this recognition, and it solidifies what we already knew — that this was a great project for a great client with a great team,” Felder said. “It was important to us to create a building that suited our image of the law firm. The building needed to fit the firm and its prominent location on the southern end of Forsyth Park. We are also very thankful for this client. They were a pleasure to work with, and helped us by making critical decisions in a timely manner, which made it easier for us to navigate the local regulatory processes.”

Brian Felder Elected Chair of Historic Savannah Foundation Board of Trustees
Brian Felder Elected Chair of Historic Savannah Foundation Board of Trustees
(SAVANNAH, GA) The Historic Savannah Foundation, a nonprofit historic preservation organization, has elected Brian Felder of Felder & Associates as its 2018 chairman of the Board of Trustees.
The announcement was made at Historic Savannah’s 62nd annual meeting. Felder succeeds Jeffrey S. Eley, of Savannah College of Art and Design, and will serve a one-year term.
Felder is the founder and managing principal of Felder & Associates, which specializes in historic preservation, commercial architecture, adaptive reuse architecture, corporate interior design, high-end residential design, green building and neo-traditional building. He was appointed to the Historic Savannah board shortly after establishing his firm in 2012 and has served as its vice president as well as parliamentarian.
“I believe the adaptive reuse of older buildings is the key to the preservation of local community character,” Felder said. “By breathing new life into old buildings, we breathe new life into the neighborhood itself. This practice ultimately increases property values, but more to the point, we are creating spaces that are productive, functioning and creative. It’s a way to reshape and protect our city’s identity and culture too.”
Felder’s projects involving old commercial and residential buildings include “The Grey” at 109 Martin Luther King Blvd., a structure that was built as a Greyhound bus depot in 1939 and has become a popular restaurant with a national reputation. Felder also revitalized a car washing and service station built in 1930 into the Atlantic, a favorite restaurant among locals located at 102 E. Victory Drive.
Felder received two HSF Preservation Awards in 2017 for his revitalization of Atlantic and Vic’s on the River. Felder also served as the lead design firm for the building that anchors the south end of Savannah’s Forsyth Park and is the new home for Savannah’s oldest law firm, Bouhan Falligant.
The mission of the Historic Savannah Foundation is to preserve and protect Savannah’s heritage through advocacy, education and community involvement. Seven women who wanted to save the city’s endangered historic properties formed the organization in 1955. It has saved more than 350 buildings in Savannah’s Landmark District and throughout several of the city’s National Register districts and has grown into one of the most respected local preservation organizations in the country.

Coastal Georgia YMCA Holds Grand Opening of Statesboro Facility
Coastal Georgia YMCA Holds Grand Opening of Statesboro Facility
Felder & Associates of Savannah serves as architect for $1 million project.
(SAVANNAH, GA) The YMCA of Coastal Georgia held a grand opening of the first phase for its new $1 million, 50,000-square-foot facility in Statesboro, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Felder & Associates of Savannah served as architect for the project at 409 Claiborne Ave., the site of the former Sallie Zetterower Elementary School complex. Work to renovate the building and grounds included adding new windows to the old school gym that now welcome light into the YMCA’s new 11,000-square-foot wellness center. Renovations were also made to an adjacent classroom wing and the cafeteria to convert them into activity spaces.
“This unique location in a neighborhood setting offers the perfect fit for the YMCA, with great accessibility, over eight acres of usable land and fifty thousand square feet of indoor space,” said Joel Smoker, president and CEO of the YMCA of Coastal Georgia. “The Felder team worked alongside many YMCA volunteers to ensure we have this beautiful and functional place to serve the community now and for generations to come.”
The facility will also offer cardio and strength equipment, a boxing studio, Child Watch and Kid Zone rooms for pre-school and school-aged children, a dedicated teen room and separate studios for yoga, Pilates, dance and group exercise classes. The local YMCA’s full-time staff of two (plus part-time instructors), is expected to increase to as many as 15 employees.
“While the renovation repurposes the building for a new use, our goal was also to preserve some of the history of the school itself, honoring the legacy of the students and teachers who once walked the halls,” said Brian Felder, managing principal of Felder & Associates.
Grand opening festivities included an open house with tours of the facility and an opportunity to meet staff members.
