The American Red Cross Announces Fourth Annual Lori Dunham Gordon Memorial Blood Drive

(SAVANNAH, GA) On Saturday, April 30, The American Red Cross will host the fourth annual Lori Dunham Gordon Memorial Blood Drive at the Savannah Mall, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The blood drive will be located on the lower level of the Savannah Mall, near Center Court between the Stuff Store and GNC. Donors will be entered to win several giveaways. This year’s goal for the drive is 25 units. Appointments are encouraged at redcrossblood.org, searching the Sponsor Code SAVMall.

According to The American Red Cross, every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. One donation can help save the lives of up to three people. Although an estimated 38% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate, less than 10% actually do each year.

“Blood donors play an integral role in the delivery of modern healthcare,” said Katie Rudder, American Red Cross Donor Recruitment Representative. “Many life-saving medical treatments and procedures involve blood transfusions and would not be possible without a safe and reliable blood supply.”

To donate, individuals must be 17 years or older, and weigh at least 110 pounds. It is suggested that donors drink plenty of fluids, wear clothing with sleeves that can easily be rolled up, and bring a list of medications that may be in their system. For more information about the donation process, visit http://www.redcrossblood.org/donating-blood/donation-process#t1

ABOUT THE AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD PROGRAM
Started in 1940, under the leadership of Dr. Charles Drew, the American Red Cross supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood supply, and provides blood for patients in approximately 2,700 hospitals across the U.S. The Red Cross makes blood available to any patient who needs it — patients are not required to find donors to replace the blood they use (a practice common in Europe and some U.S. blood banks) allowing the patient and their family to focus on recovery. Eighty percent of the blood donations given to the Red Cross are collected at mobile blood drives set up at community organizations, companies, high schools, colleges, places of worship or military installations. The remaining 20 percent are collected at fixed Red Cross donor centers. The American Red Cross works with more than 50,000 blood drive sponsors each year to hold more than 200,000 blood drives, providing convenient locations for people to give blood.

Children Get Up Close and Personal with a Life-Size Dinosaur at Savannah Mall

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Savannah Mall invited the public to meet Rexie the T-Rex. This anatomically perfect puppet stood over 8’ tall and 12’ long, providing kids and their families the opportunity to learn about this “king” of the dinosaurs that roamed what is now the U.S. and Canada during the Cretaceous Period, about 65 million years ago.

But this gentler juvenile version of the world’s largest carnivore will also offer a unique interactive opportunity to make friends and take pictures.

“Everyone loves to get face-to-face with Rexie, the life-size baby T-Rex,” said Becky Orsi-Faircloth, Savannah Mall’s marketing/specialty leasing manager. “Rexie is a realistic, walk-around puppet who is very entertaining, as well as educational.”

Rexie the T-Rex’s show times are 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. There is no cost to participate. The Savannah Mall is located at 14045 Abercorn Street. For more information about this event, call (912) 927-7467.

Stand Up for the Butterfly on Superhero Saturday at the Savannah Mall

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Savannah Mall invites the public to be a superhero for the day by helping to save butterflies. Encouraging visitors to dress up as their favorite super from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, the mall will host a variety of engaging and education activities focused on promoting the environmental protection of butterflies, specifically monarch butterflies which are facing extinction. A SuperHero meet and greet will feature Marvel Characters SpiderMan and IronMan from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Howard Turner, a Chatham County Master Gardener and Master Naturalist from The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension – Chatham County service, will discuss butterfly gardens, explaining which native plants and host plants are most attractive to butterflies and caterpillars.

Turner has owned and operated a nursery, Ann and Howard’s Plants, for ten years with his wife. “People generally know that butterflies get nectar from every flower they see, but the plant that butterflies lay their eggs are vital to their survival. If caterpillars don’t have a host plant, they will not be able to eat,” said Turner.

A representative from Live Oak Public Libraries will be hosting arts and crafts activities including coloring sheets, bookmark and butterfly stamps. The library will be back in July with story time with books themed around butterflies and the need to protect the species. Monarch butterflies are extremely at risk as they face extinction. Monarch butterflies do not fly in flocks like birds do. Each butterfly flies alone, but travels the same route as other monarchs. There may be thousands flying at the same time. Monarchs can migrate as far as 2,000 miles. The Savannah Mall will be giving away 300 seed packets for monarch butterfly attracting plants.

Oatland Island has partnered with the Savannah Mall on this Superhero Saturday, and will be bringing their bee-keeper to explain the benefits of pollination and the impact a small creature like a bee or butterfly can have on our environment. The Savannah Mall has also announced that Oatland Island will be receiving $1 from every adopt-a-butterfly kit sold this summer.

Superhero Saturday is intended to kick off the Savannah Mall’s LIVE Butterfly Exhibit that will be held in Center Court from July 3 through August 2. The exhibit will feature over 200 live butterflies from a variety of species tucked away inside a beautiful conservatory, decorated and complete with plants conducive to butterfly flight. The program also features educational displays, butterfly crafts and life-cycle kiosks. For more information, visit http://www.adoptabutterfly.com or www.savannahmall.com

The American Red Cross Announces Third Annual Lori Dunham Gordon Memorial Blood Drive

(SAVANNAH, GA) On Saturday, April 25, The American Red Cross will host the third annual Lori Dunham Gordon Memorial Blood Drive at the Savannah Mall, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The blood drive will be located on the lower level of the Savannah Mall, near Center Court between the GNC and Tech Life. Donors will be entered to win several giveaways, including a 32-inch TV and a free oil change. This year’s goal for the drive is 25 units. Appointments are encouraged at redcrossblood.org, searching the Sponsor Code SAVMall.

“My wife died from colon cancer at a very early age,” Mr. Gordon, the organizer for this blood drive said. “She was a nurse, who loved to help people. During her treatment, she needed several blood transfusions, which would not have been possible without the help of the Red Cross. I started this blood drive as a way to pay-it-forward to other patients.”

According to The American Red Cross, every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. One donation can help save the lives of up to three people. Although an estimated 38% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate, less than 10% actually do each year.

“By the time Lori was diagnosed, the cancer was already in stage four,” Mr. Gordon said. “Through events like our blood drive, I am fighting for early awareness. Everyone, men and women, should get colon checks at 40 not 50. We were very thankful for the blood that was available for Lori. This blood drive will help others to get better by creating a supply for the American Red Cross.”

“Blood donors play an integral role in the delivery of modern healthcare,” said Colleen Waldorf, American Red Cross Donor Recruitment Representative.
