Felder & Associates Receives Two 2017 Preservation Awards from Historic Savannah Foundation
Savannah Architecture Firm Honored for Work on Atlantic and Vic’s on the River

(SAVANNAH, GA) Felder & Associates, a Savannah architecture firm, has received two Historic Savannah Foundation 2017 Preservation Awards for their rehabilitation projects for two of the city’s best-known upscale restaurants, the Atlantic and Vic’s on the River.

Both projects were recognized for their preservation of history.

Atlantic, 102 E. Victory Drive, opened initially in 1930 as the Atlantic Refining Company Service Station for car washing and servicing.

Vic’s on the River, 12-42 E. Bay St., which opened as Stoddard’s Range, was designed and built in 1859 by John Norris under the supervision of John Stoddard.

MORE INFORMATION ON THE ATLANTIC REVITALIZATION
The Atlantic Refining Company Service Station on the corner of Victory Drive and Drayton Street was renovated into professional offices in 1965 when the structure lost some of its original architecture.

Thirty years later, the space gained a new owner and underwent remodeling until 2015 when the current owner and general manager, Jason Restivo, bought the property. Brian Felder from Felder & Associates and Restivo worked together to revitalize the original structure. To comply with site restrictions and zoning regulations, a low concrete wall with benches and planters was built to create a gathering space for guests to socialize around a central fire pit. Outdoor seating also is nestled under a large oak tree with intimate custom lighting.

The primary interior area occupies the former portico and seats about 40 guests. Exposed brick and rafters, concrete flooring, and fresh new colors create a dual ambiance of traditional and modern.

MORE INFORMATION ON THE VIC’S ON THE RIVER REVITALIZATION
The space at Vic’s on the River has been home to a variety of businesses since it was built in 1859. Vic’s eventually came to occupy two of the bays on the third, fourth and fifth levels of the building and now fills three more stories of an adjacent bay as well.

The ironwork balconies and railings replicate their historic precedents. The openness of the bay was preserved through dividing walls. All historic lath and plaster, as well as wrought iron surrounds, were saved and restored. The owner also rebuilt fireplaces to match the original designs.

“I started the firm in November 2012 with four employees,” said Brian Felder, managing principal of Felder & Associates. “Since that time we have worked on an array of projects, including commercial, corporate and medical facilities, churches, banks and high-end residential designs.”

Felder & Associates was recognized with three prestigious awards in 2015 for its rehabilitation project of the historic Greyhound Bus Depot, now a new restaurant, The Grey. These awards included: 2015 Preservation Award from the Historic Savannah Foundation (HSF); the Georgia Association of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2015 Design Award in Renovation; and a special judges’ award from Hospitality Design (HD) magazine.

Other recent projects include the design of the new Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Vidalia, a design update of the historic Levy residence on Tybee Island, and a restoration and an adaptive reuse project at the United Community Bank in downtown Savannah.

“We are committed to remaining a small firm, focusing on five or six projects at any given time instead of 20,” explained Felder. “This smaller scope also lets our team members spend more creative collaboration time on design and construction aspects.”

The Virginia Beach, Va., native graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Architecture. He and his wife, Denise, have three children and live in Savannah. Felder serves on the HSF Board of Trustees and as chair of the Architectural Review Committee, which provides input to the Historic District Board of Review.

Savannah Architectural Firm Set to Transform Gas Station into New Casual Dining Spot

(SAVANNAH, GA) Felder & Associates has been selected as the architectural firm for the highly anticipated new restaurant, Atlantic. Located at the corner of Drayton Street and Victory Drive, the new neighborhood eatery is the brainchild of Jason and Jennifer Restivo. Their concept for the restaurant includes sharing small dishes with friends and family in a casual setting. Jason Restivo was previously with Garibaldi.

“The general contractor, Jimmy Smith with JTVS Builders, introduced me to Jason and Jennifer to discuss the design concept, and we were all in agreement on the direction for the architectural design,” said Brian Felder, managing principal of Felder & Associates. “This has been a good fit for our team and most importantly, a highly creative and collaborative process for all involved.”

The Restivo’s good friend and designer, Elizabeth Demos, is also playing a key role in the design process, introducing materials, colors, textures, furnishings and fixtures. Felder stated that Demos’ decorative direction for the space has been an invaluable contribution as his team moves forward with planning the architectural elements for the existing building.

The building dates back to 1936, when it was the Atlantic Refining Co. Gas Station. More recently the building was a nondescript dental office. To honor the building’s unique history, the exterior plan incorporates subtle cues from the former gas station. According to Felder, there will be ample outdoor seating for patrons to enjoy al fresco dining.

Felder & Associates have received numerous awards and honors for their architectural work on Savannah’s hottest new restaurant, The Grey. The Savannah firm preserved the distinct features of the former bus depot on Martin Luther King Boulevard by selecting modern materials that complement the historical features of the building.

Felder anticipates another successful transformation for the former gas station. Atlantic opens next spring and promises to be a unique dining addition to the Savannah restaurant scene.

Felder and Associates Welcomes Junior Associate to Team

Matthew Frankel Joins Prominent Savannah Architecture Firm

(SAVANNAH, GA) Felder & Associates is pleased to announce that Matthew Frankel has joined the Savannah architecture firm as a junior associate. Frankel’s responsibilities will include providing architectural design and production as he prepares to become a licensed architect.

“We are a small office and need self-starters like Matthew,” said Brian Felder, the firm’s managing principal. “He will strengthen our technical abilities and specialized staff as he has demonstrated competence in the software we use. He has eight years of experience and will significantly increase our capacity.”

Felder & Associates has a staff of six full time employees with one intern or junior associate on staff at any given time. Interns are students who have not graduated while junior associates have graduated but are not yet licensed architects.

“I like to have interns and junior associates around,” explained Felder. “It’s part of our responsibility to educate them in real world practices, but they do more for us than we do for them.”

A native of south central Pennsylvania, Frankel earned an undergraduate degree from Clemson University and a master’s degree from the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, England. He was previously employed by Hansen Architects and has served the American Institute of Architects – Savannah chapter, United States Green Board Council, NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Boards) and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In his leisure time, Frankel enjoys armature brewing, fishing, boating, running, and being a fan of the NFL Eagles.
