Enmarket and Healthy Savannah Provides Day of Service and Donation to Union Mission

(SAVANNAH, GA) Enmarket and Healthy Savannah presented a $1,000 donation to Union Mission as part of the 2019 Enmarket Encourage Health Education Series.

Following the presentation, 15 volunteer representatives from Enmarket and Healthy Savannah remained onsite to repaint walls at Union Mission’s Ben and Bettye Barnes Center, 1407 Atlantic Avenue. The center provides permanent supportive housing for up to 16 single women living with disabilities. Program tenants are supported by such services as case management and community resource referrals.

“Our employees are always eager to give back to the community, and these volunteer days, which are new to the Encourage Health Series, have proven to be successful on all sides,” said Brett Giesick, president of Enmarket. “We appreciate the opportunity to learn about this organization and its mission. From this experience, our hope is that our team members will want to get even more involved.”

Union Mission tackles the major issue of homelessness in our area in a number of different ways, including operating an emergency shelter, providing permanent supportive housing, and addressing root causes of homelessness with specialized services in mental health counseling and employment training programs.

This marks the sixth year for the Enmarket Encourage Health Education Series, sponsored by Healthy Savannah, St. Joseph’s/Candler, Clover Health, Sandfly Family Dental, the Charles H. Morris Center at Trustees’ Garden, Cha Bella, David’s Dry Cleaners, the City of Savannah, Savannah Morning News, Savannah Magazine and WRHQ.

The Georgia Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, headquartered in Atlanta with satellite offices in Augusta and Savannah, helps those diagnosed with blood cancers with financial and emotional support. Through a variety of fundraising campaigns and directed gifts, the Georgia Chapter raised $11 million in fiscal year 2019 to help fund its mission.

(SAVANNAH, GA) Enmarket and Healthy Savannah presented $1,000 to Park Place Outreach – Youth Emergency Services as part of the 2019 Enmarket Encourage Health Series. The check presentation was followed by a service day at the Park Place Outreach house with volunteers from Enmarket.

Park Place Outreach is one of four area non-profit organizations that will receive a $1,000 grant as part of the 2019 series. Park Place Outreach- Youth Emergency Services supports runaway, homeless, and at-risk young people, ages 11-21, through residential and after-school programs.

Enmarket representatives volunteered at the House in the sun garden by planting fresh herbs and cleaning up the yard and sidewalks.

Peacock Subaru Donates $4,875 to Greater Bluffton Jasper County Volunteers in Medicine

(HARDEEVILLE, S.C.) Peacock Subaruhas donated $4,875 to Greater Bluffton Jasper County Volunteers in Medicineas part of the annual Subaru Share the Love event.

The funds were raised during November and December 2018. Each Subaru buyer could decide whether to donate a portion of the purchase price to a national charity or Peacock Subaru’s hometown nonprofit, the local chapter of Volunteers In Medicine.

Volunteers with the organization provide care to community members in Bluffton and Jasper County who are without medical insurance.

“It’s donations like these that give us the freedom to stop worrying about how we can do it and to start focusing on the people who need it,” said Dennis Toney, director of development for Bluffton Jasper County VIM. “We have outstanding nurses and physicians who donate their time and expertise, but it’s imperative that we have the financial assistance to make a difference, and Peacock Subarujust made that possible.”

The donation will go toward the daily operations of the organization, which is run by approximately 90 volunteers.

Principal of Dewitt Tilton Group Launches “Inspire Your Community” Podcast to Do Just That

(SAVANNAH, GA) Chris Tilton, one of two principals at the Dewitt Tilton Groupcommercial construction firm, has launched a monthly podcast featuring local stories of inspiration, kindness and positivity, and the company will reward people who help find those stories with a $300 donation to the cause of the nominator’s choice.

A small, heartwarming true story was the spark for “Inspire Your Community Podcast,” Tilton said.

“I heard about this guy who was dropping his daughter off at daycare one morning, just something lots of us do every day, and he noticed that the swing on the playground was broken. He didn’t complain about it to the daycare manager; he didn’t ignore the problem. Instead, the following Saturday, on his day off, he drove over and fixed the swing,” said Tilton. “Not a big thing, just seeing a problem and doing something about it.”

Such simple but true stories, Tilton thought, could inspire others to perform random acts of kindness or to act instead of complaining. His response is to launch a monthly podcast to tell true, inspiring stories suggested by members of the community. To encourage people to come forward with stories, the Dewitt Tilton Groupwill donate $300 to the cause of the successful nominator’s choice.

To submit story ideas, email dtg.inspire@gmail.com. One story will be selected each month to be the subject of the podcast, and the nominator of that story will be given the opportunity to designate a charity to receive a $300 donation.

“There are lots of inspirational stories out there, and we hope people will come forward to let us help share them,” Tilton said. “We’re starting now, so we need to hear from people. This is one small way we can all help counteract hate and negativity in the world.”

Bethesda Academy and Georgia Southern University Partner for Agricultural Research

(SAVANNAH, GA) Students at Bethesda Academy, a residential and day school for boys in grades six through 12, are joining forces with chemistry students from Georgia Southern University – Armstrong Campusto try to answer questions on how gardening methods impact the nutritional value of produce.

The research will focus on determining the antioxidant levels in food grown by three different methods: conventional soil-based cultivation using conventional fertilizers and pesticides, organic cultivation using sustainable, non-toxic processes and aquaponics, growing plants in fish tanks with a water-based system.

Bethesdawill offer the local organic testing ground and, in exchange, students will get the opportunity to engage with chemists in hands-on learning activities.

“The question of how growing method affects nutrient quality is currently one of the most hotly discussed and least studied topics in agricultural science,” said Marrin Slocombe, director of farm and garden at Bethesda. “The findings could have an enormous impact on informing consumer preferences and determining government policy.”

The Bethesdacampus is home to five-acres of organic gardens, including a large greenhouse. The school uses the facilities, as well as a cattle herd and pasture land, to teach vocational agriculture. The school sells its produce at a farm stand open from 3-5 p.m. Thursdays.
