The Boys & Girls Clubs are so grateful for this donation. Our world is driven by technology, but it can still be costly to provide our Club members with access to the equipment necessary to develop computer skills they will need every day,” said James Dismond, area director of resource development for the Clubs.

Dismond especially looks forward to the impact the computers will have on the Clubs’ literacy program, which bridges in-person tutoring with online learning engagement to help members learn and retain improved reading abilities.

“My team with Peacock Information Technology is thrilled that we can do well by the Boys & Girls Clubs with these computers,” said John Chapman, chief technical officer for Peacock Automotive. “Although we quickly outgrow PCs in our industry, they still make great additions for any classroom, learning center or lab.”

The Dell all-in-one computers features include updated operating systems, 23-inch screens, a minimum of 4 gigabytes of RAM, built-in DVD drives, integrated Intel graphics and Ethernet ports, headphone and mic jacks, keyboards and mice.

Enmarket’s New Technology Lets Mobile Users Bypass Checkout Lines

Enmarket’s New Technology Lets Mobile Users Bypass Checkout Lines

(SAVANNAH, GA) Enmarket’s convenience stores just got more convenient with the installation of Skip Checkout, a new mobile-based application that enables customers to scan and pay for their goods with their phones and skip checkout lines.

The technology is available in all 124 Enmarketstores, making it the nation’s largest convenience store chain to adopt the technology.

“Customers who have the free Skip Checkoutapp can scan their purchases with the lens on their phone, pay with the click of a button, and flash their phone to the cashier on their way out the door, all without standing in line,” said Brett Giesick, President of Enmarket. “Even people who don’t use the app will benefit because this will speed up lines and enable our employees to work on even further improving the customer experience.”

Enmarket Mobile Payments

It sounds complicated, but it’s not. Here’s a step-by-step rundown:

  • Customers download the Skip Checkoutapp free from getskip.com or your preferred app store, create an account, and link a payment card to begin using the technology. The app can be up and running in just a few minutes.
  • When you visit your Enmarketstore, open the app. Once you confirm your location, as prompted by the app, you are ready to shop!
  • Scan the barcodes of your items to add them to your shopping cart, where they will be stored until you are ready to pay. Items such as fresh fruit or hot dogs that don’t have a barcode can be purchased through a pick-list in the app.
  • Click the pay button to complete your transaction and charge your card. Then, on your way out of the store, flash your phone to an employee at the cash register to show you’re using Skip, and you’re done.

Age-restricted products such as beer may be scanned in the app, but those customers must still present their ID to the sales associate.

Customers have found the app very easy to use, and a fast, convenient way to shop.

“The process is smooth from start to finish, and the app is very easy to figure out how to use,” said Callie McIntosh, an Enmarketcustomer. “Enmarkethas really made it convenient to get in and out quickly. I use it every time I check out, and I still get a friendly acknowledgement from the employees on my way out the door.”

Enmarket employees received training to prepare for the rollout of the new technology. Employees are alerted every time a Skipshopper enters the store, and also when they have paid for their transaction, thanks to an iPad using Skiptechnology next to the cash register. Security features are built in as well.

“Convenience to our customers is fundamental to our business model,” said Giesick. “By investing in the latest technology, we are able to enhance that convenience. Customers can get in, get out and get on their way even faster with Skip Checkout. We’re thrilled to introduce this innovative technology to consumers in our markets. It has been very well received by the customers and employees who have been a part of our initial test phase.”

Beaufort Dermatology Innovates With Non-Invasive Skin Exam Technology

(BEAUFORT, SOUTH CAROLINA) Beaufort Dermatologyof Pinnacle Medical Groupis thrilled to present Vivascope 1500, the newest in skin cancer technology allowing the provider to make a diagnosis without removing any tissue. Pinnacleis the only practice in the area offering this advanced technology.

In-vivo reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) is a non-invasive skin imaging modality for detecting diseases of the skin such as melanoma and other cancers. It can be used in place of biopsies in certain cases and is effective in viewing large skin lesions where a biopsy of the entire spot might be difficult.

Additionally, it is useful in defining the margins of an area for surgical excision and can be useful in evaluating the results of treatment. Among its advantages is the ability to avoid potential scarring from biopsies and also provides a safe, painless option for children or those who may be nervous about procedures.

“Medical research and development shape a modern medical practice,” said owner Dr. Audrey A. Klenke, MD, FACS. “We are so excited to be the first to offer Vivascope 1500, which can decipher a lesion that needs to be removed versus one that can be safely monitored. In the Lowcountry, our fun-in-the-sun lifestyle makes it critical to prioritize skin health.”

Dr. Klenke adds, “The fact that procedures are becoming increasingly less invasive without losing the ability to accurately diagnose and treat is great news for patient care.”

Principal of Dewitt Tilton Group Launches “Inspire Your Community” Podcast to Do Just That

Principal of Dewitt Tilton Group Launches “Inspire Your Community” Podcast to Do Just That

(SAVANNAH, GA) Chris Tilton, one of two principals at the Dewitt Tilton Groupcommercial construction firm, has launched a monthly podcast featuring local stories of inspiration, kindness and positivity, and the company will reward people who help find those stories with a $300 donation to the cause of the nominator’s choice.

A small, heartwarming true story was the spark for “Inspire Your Community Podcast,” Tilton said.

Dewitt Tilton Group Inspire Podcast

“I heard about this guy who was dropping his daughter off at daycare one morning, just something lots of us do every day, and he noticed that the swing on the playground was broken. He didn’t complain about it to the daycare manager; he didn’t ignore the problem. Instead, the following Saturday, on his day off, he drove over and fixed the swing,” said Tilton. “Not a big thing, just seeing a problem and doing something about it.”

Such simple but true stories, Tilton thought, could inspire others to perform random acts of kindness or to act instead of complaining. His response is to launch a monthly podcast to tell true, inspiring stories suggested by members of the community. To encourage people to come forward with stories, the Dewitt Tilton Groupwill donate $300 to the cause of the successful nominator’s choice.

To submit story ideas, email dtg.inspire@gmail.com. One story will be selected each month to be the subject of the podcast, and the nominator of that story will be given the opportunity to designate a charity to receive a $300 donation.

“There are lots of inspirational stories out there, and we hope people will come forward to let us help share them,” Tilton said. “We’re starting now, so we need to hear from people. This is one small way we can all help counteract hate and negativity in the world.”

The podcast can be accessed at YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play, Stitcher, and everywhere else podcasts can be found. View the first episode here, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EgdS0dh9UY.

Pooler Parkway Location is Enmarket’s Largest Newly Built Store

(POOLER, GA) Enmarket, a Savannah-based chain of convenience stores, built a new 6,366-square-foot store on Pooler Parkway across the street from the soon-to-open St. Joseph’s/CandlerPooler Campus.

The store, which offers 20 fueling stations and an electronic vehicle charging station, is Enmarket’s third in Pooler but its first on Pooler Parkway. The two others are on Highway 80.

The new store features the chain’s first drive-through window, serving fresh food and beverages from Enmarket’s proprietary restaurant, The Eatery. It also features touchless restrooms, exposed ceilings, spacious parking and outdoor seating.

The Greatest Year Ever for Savannah’s Film and Television Industry

The Greatest Year Ever for Savannah’s Film and Television Industry
By Charles J. Bowen

Charles Bowen

Charles Bowen

What do an aging assassin hunting his clone, a football-playing private investigator trying to exonerate his daughter, an escaped slave interacting with famous historical figures, and an upper-class cocker spaniel falling in love with a street smart mutt all have in common? They are all leading characters in movies filmed in Savannah in 2018.

These films do not even begin to demonstrate the breadth of last year’s film and television industry in Savannah. From film noir in John Travolta’s “The Poison Rose” to the science fiction action thriller “Gemini Man” starring Will Smith to Disney’s live-action remake of “Lady and the Tramp,” Savannah has played host to almost every possible genre of production.

Over 200 professional film and television productions were filmed in the Savannah area in 2018 with another 147 student productions on top of that. Whether large or small, each and every production served as an economic engine pumping cash into every corner of the local economy.

According to the Savannah Regional Film Commission, these productions accounted for $120 million in direct spending locally and had a total economic impact of well over $250 million in 2018 alone. These figures shattered the record set in 2017 of $65 million in direct spending with $138 million in total local economic impact.

As founder of the Savannah Film Alliance, I see the tremendous financial impact these productions have daily on a diverse range of local businesses. In addition to food and lodging, film crews utilize dry cleaners, pet sitters, massage therapists, and countless other local professionals. Small businesses across the city are finding a windfall in income from these productions, and every month, more and more businesses that service the entertainment industry are moving to town.

One of the major reasons for this boom in the local film and television industry is the Savannah Entertainment Production Incentive offered by the Savannah Economic Development Authority. This program provides cash rebates to qualified film and television productions that schedule a majority of their shooting days within 60 miles of Savannah City Hall. Since this rebate applies to local spending only, it encourages productions to hire local crew and utilize local businesses and service providers.

The reason this incentive is so effective is that it is offered on top of the very generous production incentives offered statewide by the State of Georgia. But all this government support would mean nothing without the many local crew members, small business owners, industry leaders, and educators, such as the Georgia Film Academyat Savannah Tech, that have worked tirelessly to transform Savannah into one of the most popular filming destinations in the world.

While these statistics are certainly reasons to celebrate, it is crucial to remember that all of this progress can be instantly destroyed by one ill-informed swipe of our new governor’s pen. As North Carolina discovered after its infamous “bathroom bill,” any effort to roll back the civil rights gains of the last 60-plus years under the guise of “religious liberty” could decimate Georgia’s film and television industry. Just last year, a bill that would have allowed private adoption agencies to legally discriminate based on “sincerely-held religious beliefs” made it all the way through the Georgia Senate before failing. Thus, it is important to remain vigilant lest any such efforts resurface.

Looking forward to 2019, Savannah looks well-positioned to hold onto its status as the second most filmed city in Georgia behind Atlanta. Numerous productions have either committed to or expressed interest in filming in Savannah this year. Remember, there is a lot more at stake than simply the chance to spot a movie star at a local restaurant or to recognize a familiar site on the screen. Entire livelihoods and real money supporting real families are being built by the local film and television industry and you never know where the flow of that money will ultimately land.

While recently browsing a local antique mall, well-removed from the lights-camera-action world, a friend ran across a prop master buying rotary phones for the 2019 local filming of “The Glorias: A Life on the Road,” a Gloria Steinem biopic. The film dollar travels far and wide. The pocket in which it winds up may well be yours.

GHCcoordinated the launch of the new website to coincide with the expansion of their hospice services into South Carolina.

Felder & Associates Launches New Website Designed by Speros

Felder & Associates Launches New Website Designed by Speros

(SAVANNAH, GA) Felder & Associateshas just launched their redesigned website, felderassociates.net.

Designed by Speros, a full-service technology company in Savannah, the site has been restructured to better feature the architecture and design firm’s growing portfolio of work specializing in historic preservation, architectural design, project management, construction administration and interior design.

Felder & Associates New Website

“It was becoming more apparent the old website was not structurally well suited to showcasing our increasing number of photos and content,” said Brian Felder, the firm’s managing principal. “We wanted a site that better reflected our company’s character and standards and behaved consistently in different browsers. I’m pleased to say the Sperosteam was able to accomplish that.”

Lauren Dingus, Speros’ director of web design and marketing, updated the site’s visible aspects, first by repurposing a video highlighting various steps of the design process. It is now featured prominently on the home page and provides background interest while visitors browse through the site’s streamlined navigation menu.

Divided into three distinct sectors, Felder & Associates’ updated project portfolio features a variety of residential and religious projects, as well as some of the firm’s best known commercial work.

“We were able to create a more organized project portfolio and to assist viewers looking for specific work, as well as press releases and award information,” said Dingus. “The new navigation makes it easier for viewers to stay on the site while they move around and find the information they need.”

Felder & Associates’ updated website also includes information about the firm’s history and its growing team of associates, as well as a news gallery. For more information, visit https://felderassociates.net/

Savannah Vet, Dr. Jason King, Launches Pet Care Reminder App, “HEEL”

Savannah Vet, Dr. Jason King, Launches Pet Care Reminder App, “HEEL”

(SAVANNAH, GA) Dr. Jason King, CEO of Live Oak Veterinary Neurology, has launched a new network app called “Heel!” that’s designed to foster cooperation and information sharing between veterinarians and pet owners.

Dr. Jason King

Dr. Jason King, CEO of Live Oak Veterinary Neurology

The system sends reminders for medication or other recurring needs to pet owners via a smartphone app. An internet portal allows veterinary professionals to communicate with each other and the pet owner on prescription refills, therapy details, and other pet health issues.

“The app tames the problem of pet prescription compliance, allowing the sharing of reminders between pet parents, spouses, pet-sitters, and veterinary professionals,” King said. “Heel!also allows real-time updating of therapy details directly from the prescribing veterinarian to the owner’s phone reminders. Pet parents are able to request prescription refills with the convenience of one touch while veterinarians gain improved compliance and control. Pets, the center of the network, gain a seamless web of communication across their care team, which can remain entirely focused on the animal’s health.”

King is the founder and owner of Live Oak Veterinary Neurologyin Savannah, which offers veterinary medical and surgical therapy for diseases of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and muscles.

“It’s unfortunate, but we see a lot of preventable deaths occur because pet parents don’t administer the prescribed medication regularly or to its entirety,” continued King. “As much of a convenience as this app is, it is also intended to save lives.”

He recently was recognized for his development of the Heel!app by the Savannah Chapter of SCORE, the nation’s largest provider of free business mentoring services and educational programs for aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners. He was selected as a winner of the organization’s inaugural BizPitch Savannahentrepreneurial competition in September 2018.

The Heel!app is available for download through online app stores or from the website www.heelapp.com.

Enmarket, one of the first convenience store chains in the U.S. to use the new mobile payment technology, has partnered with Skip, a mobile self-checkout service. The technology is designed to reduce the speed of checkout from an average of 60 seconds to an instant checkout action controlled by the customer.

“Getting our product into stores like Enmarketis a perfect fit” said Chase Thomason, Skipfounder and CEO. “There are some fantastic similarities in our respective missions to the end customer, and we definitely share the appreciation of valuing the consumers’ time in the fast-paced world that we live in.”
