Roush’s Delivery Service, founded in 1973, provides expedited less-than-truckload (LTL) and logistics services. Mike Roush is president of the family-owned firm, and Mike Roush Jr. is its general manager. The company experienced a 400% growth over the past four years, thus demanding physical expansion.

“We have to adapt as our clients’ needs change,” said Mike Roush. “Most of our customers now need project-based work, and our new site will equip us to meet those needs in the most effective manner. Yes, we have grown tremendously, but the reason for this expansion is also to better serve our clients.”

The pre-engineered metal building will include 3,500 square feet of heated and cooled office space. The building is dock-high all the way around, and the office portion will be configured as two stories. Translucent light panels along the front and rear will allow natural light into the warehouse. 12 overhead garage doors that vary in size with edge or pit levelers will accommodate most any truck and its load. There is also a concrete ramp into the building from parking level as another means of access for receiving or delivering goods.

“Mike and I were buddies in grade school and high school,” Chris Tilton, one of the principals at Dewitt Tilton, said of the younger Roush. “Who would have thought, back when we were at Benedictine, that we would one day be working together on a $2 million construction project? We appreciate all of our clients, but it is really fun to work with old friends.”

Bishop Hartmayer blesses Corpus Christi worship space

More than 300 people filled the worship space in the multi-purpose building for the blessing of the long awaited home for the Catholic Communty in Pooler.

In 2015, Fr. Gabe Cummings of St. Frances Cabriniand Barbara Goodwin began searching for a temporary location where a weekly Mass could be celebrated in Pooler. The Reverend David Wesley Lemburg, pastor of Saint Patrick’s Episcopal Church, Pooler, opened its doors to the Catholic community and became the place where the faithful would gather.

Father Thomas J. Murphy, the pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes, Port Wentworth, was appointed by Bishop Hartmayer to establish the new community. The first Catholic Mass was offered on May 2, 2015 with a standing-room-only crowd. The group was named the Pooler Catholic Community.

After initiating a capital campaign under the leadership of co-chairs Barbara Goodwin and Dozier Cook, the members of the Pooler Catholic Communityraised the funds needed to clear ground donated by the Diocese of Savannah, at 1745 Benton Blvd. As plans for a new church were underway, the groundbreaking took place in October 2017.

On the feast of Corpus Christi, June 15, 2016, the Bishop announced that the new church would be named Corpus Christi Catholic Church— the Body of Christ.

The 17,000 square foot multipurpose building will be used for worship, pastoral offices and religious education. Future plans call for a sanctuary to be built at the location.

Plans New Offices, Revamped Retail and Other Buildings at Major Intersection

(SAVANNAH, GA) Enmarket, the Savannah-based convenience store chain, plans to build a new headquarters building as part of a new complex at Ogeechee Road and Chatham Parkway. The lot has been cleared and site work is currently underway.

“The Enmarketstore count has increased by 66 stores since 2017, doubling in the last year alone, and creating more jobs that support our store operations,” said Brett Giesick, president of Enmarket. “These new jobs that are based out of our Savannah headquarters include positions in accounting, marketing, facilities and maintenance, information technology, and operations. We are excited to have this opportunity to build a state-of-the-art office for our employees.”

The company will build a new 22,000-square-foot office structure along with a second building of equal size that will be used as flex space and will provide room for future expansion.

The Enmarketstore currently on the site will be rebuilt as a 5,900-square-foot Enmarket, complete with a 70-foot tunnel car wash. The store, car wash and offices are scheduled to open later this year.

Savannah-based general contractor West Construction Companyhas been selected as the builder for the project and construction is underway. WCCPresident Matt West states, “Enmarkethas been a great corporate citizen in Savannah since 1963, and we’re proud that they have entrusted our team with this important chapter in their storied history.”

Included in the plans are two out-parcel lots earmarked for future development, sale or lease. The new headquarters is scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of 2019.

A Tale of Two Houses on Tybee Island

Felder & Associates, a Savannah architecture firm, was recently asked to work on a project that would encompass renovating an historic Tybee raised cottage that had sheltered four generations of one family. They were also commissioned to build a companion structure on the adjacent lots.

The historic Tybee Island property included a Tybee cottage built in 1935 on two beachfront lots and two empty adjacent lots. The two grandchildren of the original owners divided the property, the granddaughter receiving the historic house, and the grandson the two empty lots.

The new owners selected Felder & Associatesto renovate the cottage and build a new house on the two remaining lots. Felder & Associatescreated a unique design that included incorporating green passive elements to catch breezes and shield direct sunlight. They also added solar panels to the roofs to capitalize on Tybee’s Solarize program, which offered a 30 percent federal tax credit through 2016.

“We performed sun-angle studies for every season and then made slight adjustments on porches and overhangs to make sure the sun would not shine directly into the house,” said Brian Felder, the firm’s principal. “We were also careful to place the new house so it would be in balance with the old house and the environment.” Felder & Associatesaimed to have the smallest footprint possible. Felder said, “While we were allowed to have a 50 percent impact on the dune protection zone, the new house has only a 10 to 15 percent impact.”

Felder respected the integrity of the original cottage to celebrate the traditional Tybee architecture. With one minor addition, the cottage retained its wrap-around porch, servant quarters and wood paneling. Felder even removed more recent vinyl siding to expose the original mitered cypress siding.

“The house needed to look the way it always did,” Felder said. “The flow of public space remains what it always was. The only change we made was to swap the kitchen and bedroom and then add a master suite tucked away on the land side.” The original floors and on-site built doors and windows remain along with the original board-and-batten interior walls.

Felder considered family input and a great deal of research on the cottage’s history before updating the traditional structure. To renovate it without having to bring it up to FEMA guidelines, Felder had the home designated as an historic structure.

“Tybee cottages were built with materials that are superior to what we have today,” he said. “They have amazing structural members made of cedar or cypress that have lasted 80 to 90 years. The house sits on reinforced concrete piers. Every surface in the house is wood. There are no issues with mold and mildew that come with drywall. It performs well in open air. And while it sits low to the ground and could be prone to the occasional tropical storm surge, it is not as vulnerable as the newer homes that code requires to be built up on stilts. Some of them are like sails in the wind.”

The new home was built before the original cottage renovations were underway. Constructed of concrete and steel with wood framing, it has an exterior of Hardi Plank siding painted Cape Cod gray and accented with a sandy-tan trim. The inspiration for this choice came from an architectural model of a building the owners had seen in a museum. They asked Felder to bring its nautical motion and movement into the façade of their new home.

Felder incorporated the floor plan of the traditional cottage into the new home, flipping it upside-down in the three-story structure. In accordance with code, a garage and elevator entrance is on the street level. Above that are the bedrooms, and the main living area is situated on the top floor, with breathtaking panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Felder & Associates Adapts Historic Home for Savannah African Art Museum

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Savannah African Art Museum is moving to a larger and more accessible space.

Currently housed at 111 E. 34th St., the museum’s collection of more than 1,000 pieces of mostly central and western African artwork will relocate to a 6,000-square-foot historic home at 201 E. 37th St. in late summer.

Savannah architecture and design firm Felder & Associates is adapting the building, which was built in 1922 as a luxury home for a local family, for its new role. The structure was most recently used for an antiques mall.

“Our mission is to adapt a historic house from a retail environment into something of a neutral background for a vast collection of mostly three-dimensional sculptures, some of which have never been shown because of lack of space,” said Brian Felder, founder and principal of Felder & Associates. “Because of its size, this building is perfect for the African Art Museum as the large rooms are ideal for displaying his collection.”

The African art, representative of about 22 countries and 130 cultures and ethnic groups in central and west Africa, is collected by Don Kole, a local businessman and philanthropist, who has amassed the collection in extensive travels over the past 30 years. The artwork showcases a range of ceremonial and spiritual objects from the 19th and 20th centuries made from ceramics, metal, and wood.

“I’ve always been a collector and used to collect art of central and south America,” Kole said. “One day I went into a shop and saw this African art that was magnificent and sophisticated. I have been collecting it ever since.”.

For years, Kole stored the artwork at his property management office. Then, in 2014, he exhibited a portion of his metal works collection at Armstrong State University and saw a need to extend the educational opportunity to groups from Savannah’s public and private schools, especially to students who may know little of their ancestral homeland.

When a former photography studio across the street from his office became available a couple of years ago, he opened the nonprofit Savannah African Art Museum but soon realized he needed more space for the artwork, much of which was still in storage, as well as off-street parking.

At the same time, Felder’s team was working with the seller of the former antiques mall to find an opportunity to repurpose the space when Kole called to ask about the property.

“Brian Felder and his company have been wonderful,” Kole said. “Right from the start they understood what I wanted. The plans are phenomenal, and they’re a pleasure to work with.”

Felder & Associates has teamed with Bloomquist Construction and Chatham Engineering on the project, which is underway.

When the museum opens in its new, larger space in late summer, admission will continue to be free.
