Enmarket Hires Director of Food Service with Culinary Degree, Corporate Chef Background

(SAVANNAH, GA) Enmarket, Savannah’s largest convenience store chain, has reinforced its commitment to bring healthy eating to the world of convenience with the recent hire of Ryan Krebs as director of food service.

Krebs is a classically trained chef, and he joins Enmarket after a substantial career that has included restaurants, fine dining hotels, nonprofits, health care and the convenience store market.

He began cooking professionally at the age of 16 and went on to earn a culinary arts degree from Johnson & Wales University, and a dietary manager certification from the University of North Dakota.

In addition to a career that has taken him from health care facilities to fine hotels, Krebs has co-authored a book on food service and culture in health care. In his most recent position as director of food service at Rutter’s in York, Pennsylvania, Krebs was recognized as 2017’s “Food Service Leader of the Year” by Convenience Store News. He also received the 2018 Produce Excellence Award presented by United Fresh.

During his time with Rutter’s, the 76-unit convenience store and gas station chain was recognized as the food service innovator of the year, as having the greatest coffee program in convenience, as the #1 convenience store for menu variety and as the healthiest convenience store chain.

Leadership Southeast Georgia Launches 2020 Program in Glynn County with Study of Natural Resources

(GLYNN COUNTY, GA) The 28 members of Leadership Southeast Georgia’s (LSEGA) class of 2020 launched their first session with a close look at the coastal region’s natural resources in Brunswick, Ga. and on Little St. Simons Island.

The leadership program draws together business and civic influencers from throughout Georgia’s 10-county coastal region to offer an in-depth look at the region’s challenges and assets. Members of the class also benefit from networking opportunities designed to boost collaboration and cooperation throughout the region.

Heard Galis, one of two principals at Galis/Stewart Insurance in Brunswick’s Historic District, was the session coordinator for the first of the five weekends. He graduated from the LSEGA program in 2017.

The session began with a shrimp boat excursion in the waters off Brunswick. Led by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) staff, participants received a first-hand look at the fruits of Georgia’s traditional shrimp industry, as well as the barriers it faces. The class learned about the many ways our Georgia coastline is unique from the nationally recognized conservation efforts to the biology itself. Professionals at DNR also reviewed critical issues facing the region’s beloved coast and explored solutions such as rainwater capture, living shorelines and habitat restoration.

That afternoon, the group traveled by ferry to Little St. Simons Island, where the remainder of the three-day session was held. The class spent this time on the island between classroom sessions and outdoor activities that included a natural resources scavenger hunt.

“Little St. Simons Island is the perfect setting for the first session,” said Brynn Grant, chair of the LSEGA board of directors. “A bit of isolation on one of Georgia’s glorious barrier islands is a great backdrop for class members to get to know one another and begin developing the relationships that make the program so strong year after year.”

(SAVANNAH, GA) Leadership Southeast Georgia (LSEGA), an innovative leadership program serving a 10-county area of southeast Georgia, has announced its Board of Directors. Brynn Grant now chairs the board, assuming the role filled previously by Lee Beckmann of the Georgia Ports Authority.

Grant is the chief operating officer of the Savannah Economic Development Authority, where she has been on staff for more than 18 years. COO since 2013, Brynn also serves as vice president of the World Trade Center of Savannah, a role she has held since the organization was launched in 2011. The Liberty County native holds a journalism degree from the University of Georgia and is a graduate of Leadership Savannah, Leadership Southeast Georgia and Leadership Georgia.

LSEGA’s new vice-chairman is Jared Downs with the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce. He, too, is a product of the program he now helps lead — in addition to completing the Leadership Georgia program in 2019, he and his wife Kathryn graduated from LSEGA in 2015 and 2016 respectively, and Jared participated in Leadership Savannah in 2008.

Enmarket’s New Technology Lets Mobile Users Bypass Checkout Lines

(SAVANNAH, GA) Enmarket’s convenience stores just got more convenient with the installation of Skip Checkout, a new mobile-based application that enables customers to scan and pay for their goods with their phones and skip checkout lines.

The technology is available in all 124 Enmarketstores, making it the nation’s largest convenience store chain to adopt the technology.

“Customers who have the free Skip Checkoutapp can scan their purchases with the lens on their phone, pay with the click of a button, and flash their phone to the cashier on their way out the door, all without standing in line,” said Brett Giesick, President of Enmarket. “Even people who don’t use the app will benefit because this will speed up lines and enable our employees to work on even further improving the customer experience.”

Enmarket Mobile Payments

It sounds complicated, but it’s not. Here’s a step-by-step rundown:

  • Customers download the Skip Checkoutapp free from getskip.com or your preferred app store, create an account, and link a payment card to begin using the technology. The app can be up and running in just a few minutes.
  • When you visit your Enmarketstore, open the app. Once you confirm your location, as prompted by the app, you are ready to shop!
  • Scan the barcodes of your items to add them to your shopping cart, where they will be stored until you are ready to pay. Items such as fresh fruit or hot dogs that don’t have a barcode can be purchased through a pick-list in the app.
  • Click the pay button to complete your transaction and charge your card. Then, on your way out of the store, flash your phone to an employee at the cash register to show you’re using Skip, and you’re done.

Age-restricted products such as beer may be scanned in the app, but those customers must still present their ID to the sales associate.

Customers have found the app very easy to use, and a fast, convenient way to shop.

“The process is smooth from start to finish, and the app is very easy to figure out how to use,” said Callie McIntosh, an Enmarketcustomer. “Enmarkethas really made it convenient to get in and out quickly. I use it every time I check out, and I still get a friendly acknowledgement from the employees on my way out the door.”

Enmarket employees received training to prepare for the rollout of the new technology. Employees are alerted every time a Skipshopper enters the store, and also when they have paid for their transaction, thanks to an iPad using Skiptechnology next to the cash register. Security features are built in as well.

“Convenience to our customers is fundamental to our business model,” said Giesick. “By investing in the latest technology, we are able to enhance that convenience. Customers can get in, get out and get on their way even faster with Skip Checkout. We’re thrilled to introduce this innovative technology to consumers in our markets. (Savannah, GA) Savannah-based Kole Management Co. is in the process of selling its portfolio of 13 apartment communities in two states to transition exclusively into property management. In its new form, the company will retain management of eleven of those properties.

Kole Managementput its multifamily portfolio on the market in November, and all of its properties are under contract with closing expected in April and May. (SAVANNAH, GA) In recognition of April being Oral Cancer Awareness Month, Sandfly Family Dentalin Savannah and Premier Dental Designsin Rincon will offer free oral cancer screenings on Thursday, April 11 and Thursday, April 25. The exams normally cost as much as $80.

“I recommend anyone 18 and older to be tested annually for oral cancer,” said Dr. Angela Canfield, who owns both offices. “The oral cancer screening light shows a change in oral tissue that warrants a biopsy. For patients who show a change in tissue, I usually suggest a follow-up visit with an oral surgeon or an ear nose and throat specialist, depending on the levels found.”

The oral cancer screening is noninvasive and takes less than 10 minutes. While the screenings will be free, an appointment is necessary.

The death rate associated with oral cancer is high not just because it is hard to discover or diagnose but because it frequently is discovered late in its development. In the United States, one person dies every 60 minutes because of oral cancer.

According to the National Cancer Institute, 43 percent of those diagnosed with oral cancers will die within five years. While the disease has few, if any, early symptoms, early detection can increase survival rates to as much as 90 percent.

Oral cancer typically is associated with long-term tobacco use, but it’s becoming more frequent in young adults who have never smoked.

Pooler Parkway Location is Enmarket’s Largest Newly Built Store

(POOLER, GA) Enmarket, a Savannah-based chain of convenience stores, built a new 6,366-square-foot store on Pooler Parkway across the street from the soon-to-open St. Joseph’s/CandlerPooler Campus.

The store, which offers 20 fueling stations and an electronic vehicle charging station, is Enmarket’s third in Pooler but its first on Pooler Parkway. The two others are on Highway 80.

The new store features the chain’s first drive-through window, serving fresh food and beverages from Enmarket’s proprietary restaurant, The Eatery. It also features touchless restrooms, exposed ceilings, spacious parking and outdoor seating.

Some features are invisible to customers but will contribute to better service, such things as a redesigned and more efficient kitchen and an improved vendor receiving area. Progressive Builderswas the general contractor for the project.

It’s always a good time to think about the health of your children’s teeth. The routines you set in stone now will carry your children into adulthood and set the stage for healthy teeth.

When it comes to those teeth, a tried-and-true parental friend comes in handy: routine. Brushing and flossing should be a part of your child’s daily routine in the morning and before bed.

But additional routines are needed too. I’m talking about a twice-a-year dental checkup. You don’t want a dental visit to become a time of trauma and dread because of a dental emergency. A positive, cheerful visit with a dentist who understands children’s needs and is experienced in dealing with them should be as much a part of a child’s life as checkups with a pediatrician, back-to-school supply shopping or a photo with Santa.

For parents who want to build dental care into their children’s lifelong habits, the American Dental Association’s consumer website, mouthhealthy.org, can be a useful tool. Savannah did not become a preferred filming destination based solely upon Mother Nature’s bounty. While warm weather, beaches, forests, creeks, and marshes (not to mention some of the most beautiful architecture on the planet) can offer up a feast to any camera’s lens, the truth is that the lifeblood of the film industry is illusion. One room with a simple green wall can be instantly transformed into any location in the universe. Thus, despite the breathtaking nature beauty of the Coastal Empire, continued success will not be assured by our looks alone.

Movies and television shows can be insightful, inspirational, and uplifting. They have the ability to mentally transport the viewer to another time and place and have motivated some of the greatest leaders of our generation. But first and foremost, they are also a business. That means that money counts. A lot.

The State of Georgiahas become one of the top filming locations in the world due to the generous film tax credits offered by the Georgia Department of Economic Development. Those financial incentives are why the dead walk in Senoia, Georgia and the Black Panther’s homeland of Wakanda has an Atlanta ZIP code.

While that is great for the state as a whole, what about Savannah? That is where the Savannah Entertainment Production Incentive comes into play. The Savannah Economic Development Authority(SEDA) has just approved a three-year renewal of this unique set of financial incentives for movie and television productions.

Thanks to SEDA, Savannah became the first city in the state to add additional benefits on top of Georgia’s already generous incentives. These local incentives provide $4 million to qualifying film and television productions that shoot in Savannah. They have also earmarked $100,000.00 of that total for professional auditing to ensure that the guidelines are being followed by the recipients.

So how do these incentives benefit local businesses? In the broad economic picture, everyone in the region indirectly profits due to the boost that productions provide the local economy. Movie and television productions directly spent more than $120 million dollars in the Savannah area in 2018, which equates (according to the experts) to a total economic impact of over $250 million. Landlords, florists, security firms, antiques dealers, equipment rental firms, hoteliers, restaurateurs, and many other industries all shared in that windfall.

If you would like to apply for the incentive directly, however, you must be planning a feature film or television pilot with a budget of at least $2 million with at least $500,000.00 of that amount being spent on approved expenditures within Chatham County. Productions that meet those requirements can qualify for a 10 percent rebate on qualified local spending up to a cap of $100,000.00. Television series have higher budgetary requirements but the annual cap goes up to $250,000.00.

The precise guidelines may be found on the Savannah Regional Film Commission’s website, savannahfilm.org. The incentives previously applied only to Chatham County but now cover any filming within a 60-mile radius of Savannah City Hall.

It should also be noted that SEDAis providing economic incentives to help build the local crew base, as no production would be possible without the myriad of individuals working diligently behind the scenes. If you have five years of verifiable experience as a film or television technician and would like to relocate to Chatham County, the local incentive will reimburse up to $2,000.00 per household for qualified moving expenses. The current budget allocates up to $100,000.00 per year on these crew relocations. That is enough for fifty crew members per year to move to Savannah, helping ensure that producers can find the local crew they need. Even better, the production itself can qualify for a bonus incentive if 50 percent of its official crew is hired locally.

Given the tremendous advantage that Atlanta has over Savannah in terms of both population and infrastructure, Atlanta will likely always remain the top filmmaking destination in Georgia. Indeed, Atlanta showed up No. 2 on MovieMaker Magazine’s January 2019 list of the best major cities for making movies. Savannah, however, claimed the No. 1 spot on that same magazine’s list of best small cities and towns for film and television production. This is a tremendous testament to the hard work of all the individuals in the Savannah Regional Film Commission, SEDA, and the countless other individuals and companies that have tirelessly and diligently labored to help build the Savannah film and television industry.

More than 300 people filled the worship space in the multi-purpose building for the blessing of the long awaited home for the Catholic Communty in Pooler.

In 2015, Fr. Gabe Cummings of St. Frances Cabriniand Barbara Goodwin began searching for a temporary location where a weekly Mass could be celebrated in Pooler. The Reverend David Wesley Lemburg, pastor of Saint Patrick’s Episcopal Church, Pooler, opened its doors to the Catholic community and became the place where the faithful would gather.

Father Thomas J. Murphy, the pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes, Port Wentworth, was appointed by Bishop Hartmayer to establish the new community. The first Catholic Mass was offered on May 2, 2015 with a standing-room-only crowd. The group was named the Pooler Catholic Community.

After initiating a capital campaign under the leadership of co-chairs Barbara Goodwin and Dozier Cook, the members of the Pooler Catholic Communityraised the funds needed to clear ground donated by the Diocese of Savannah, at 1745 Benton Blvd. As plans for a new church were underway, the groundbreaking took place in October 2017.

On the feast of Corpus Christi, June 15, 2016, the Bishop announced that the new church would be named Corpus Christi Catholic Church— the Body of Christ.

The 17,000 square foot multipurpose building will be used for worship, pastoral offices and religious education. Future plans call for a sanctuary to be built at the location.

(SAVANNAH, GA) Autism activist Temple Grandin, widely acknowledged as one of the world’s most accomplished and best-known autistic adults, will be the keynote speaker when the Matthew Reardon Center for Autismhosts its 2019 Autism ConferenceFeb. 28 and March 1 at the Savannah Convention Center. The conference comes as estimates indicate that one in 59 children born in the United States will be diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder.

The Reardon Center’s fourth annual conference is organized for a diverse audience: professionals and academics who work with autistic people (with continuing education credits in many cases), families affected by autism, autistic people, potential employers and members of the general public who are interested in this growing social and medical challenge.

Grandin will discuss “Autism and My Path Through Life” the final afternoon of the conference as wrap up of the two-day conference, which also features presentations by 22 autism experts and includes a first-in-Savannah Reverse Job Fair to help people with autism find jobs.

Grandin, a best-selling author of multiple books and an internationally recognized expert in animal welfare and behavior, did not speak until she was four-years-old and was diagnosed with autism at a time when it was less well understood than it is today. Her family ignored advice to institutionalize her and she went on to earn a doctorate in animal science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She currently is a professor of animal science at Colorado State University, and her research in the development of humane systems of handling animals in the meat-production industry is highly regarded and implemented internationally. Grandin is also the subject of a biographical movie and numerous television documentaries.

The 2019 Autism Conferencewill also feature numerous nationally-respected speakers, addressing topics such as educational strategies for teachers and parents, augmentative and assistive communication, guardianship and other legal issues, bullying and personal accounts from autistic people. In addition to diverse workshops and Grandin’s keynote address, the conference will host a Reverse Job Fair, a setting which removes many of the barriers people with autism face when seeking employment.

Potential employers then go from table to table, giving each job-seeker an opportunity to showcase their particular strengths. Plans New Offices, Revamped Retail and Other Buildings at Major Intersection

(SAVANNAH, GA) Enmarket, the Savannah-based convenience store chain, plans to build a new headquarters building as part of a new complex at Ogeechee Road and Chatham Parkway. The lot has been cleared and site work is currently underway.

“The Enmarketstore count has increased by 66 stores since 2017, doubling in the last year alone, and creating more jobs that support our store operations,” said Brett Giesick, president of Enmarket. “These new jobs that are based out of our Savannah headquarters include positions in accounting, marketing, facilities and maintenance, information technology, and operations. We are excited to have this opportunity to build a state-of-the-art office for our employees.”

The company will build a new 22,000-square-foot office structure along with a second building of equal size that will be used as flex space and will provide room for future expansion.

The Enmarketstore currently on the site will be rebuilt as a 5,900-square-foot Enmarket, complete with a 70-foot tunnel car wash. The store, car wash and offices are scheduled to open later this year.

Savannah-based general contractor West Construction Companyhas been selected as the builder for the project and construction is underway. WCCPresident Matt West states, “Enmarkethas been a great corporate citizen in Savannah since 1963, and we’re proud that they have entrusted our team with this important chapter in their storied history.”

Included in the plans are two out-parcel lots earmarked for future development, sale or lease. The new headquarters is scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of 2019.

National Study Confirms Horizons Savannah’s Long-Term Approach to Student Success

(SAVANNAH, GA) A recent national study confirms that students who participate in Horizonsprograms have better school attendance, higher academic outcomes, fewer disciplinary referrals and fewer grade retentions.

The new study, conducted by Concentric Research & Evaluation (CRE) and funded by The New York Life Foundation and the Scripps Family Fund for Education and the Arts, validates that Horizonsprograms that focus on long-term engagement with children from low-income families produce strong academic outcomes.

“We know the impact this program has on Savannah’s youth. We see it each summer, as we watch our kids progress year after year,” said Christy Edwards, executive director of Horizons Savannah. “To have a national study confirm that this program makes tangible differences in the lives of our program’s children is awe inspiring. Over the long term, Horizonsis having a positive impact in our city and I praise the vision and leadership of our host schools, board of directors and donors that have always believed in our mission.”

When compared to their peers, students who have participated in the Horizonsprogram for at least four summers had the following in common:

Higher attendance rates and lower rates of chronic absenteeism
Higher scores on standardized assessments of elementary math and science
Higher GPAs in 9th grade, a critical transition year
More course credit earned in 9th and 10th grades
Fewer times repeating a grade
Fewer disciplinary referrals
Most research on summer learning has found that students from low-income families fall behind their wealthier peers over the course of the summer, either because they are losing knowledge and skills or gaining them at a slower pace.

“These summer learning student outcomes reflect Horizons’ long-standing commitment to quality data collection and offer a significant contribution to the growing body of evidence on the long-term effects of summer learning,” said Matthew Boulay, founder and CEO of the National Summer Learning Association. “Horizons’ exemplary standards in programming not only inspire a joy of learning during the critical summer months but, most importantly, set students up to thrive in the school year ahead.”

The study looked at fifteen Horizonsprogram sites in seven states, and, because it focused on long-term participants in the program, included only sites in operation for at least four years. Horizons Savannahhas been in operation since 2002. Each Horizonsstudent in the study was paired with a student who did not participate in Horizonsbut attended the same school or a school with similar demographics and achievement scores. Researchers used a variety of characteristics to match students, including gender, race and ethnicity.
