Bethesda Academy 2018 Sporting Clays Tournament Raises Over $90,000 for Student Scholarships
10th Annual Benefit held at Forest City Gun Club

(SAVANNAH, GA) Bethesda Academy raised $93,650 at their 10th annual Sporting Clays Tournament held at the Forest City Gun Club. All sponsorship and event proceeds benefit Bethesda’s scholarship program for young men in grades six through twelve.

The tournament included a wild game lunch and wild game hors d’oeuvres cocktail reception, both prepared by chef Kirk Blaine. In addition, participants attended a safety and shooting clinic.

The live auction, award ceremony and wild game cocktail reception was held after the tournament. Auction and raffle items included a hunting trip with Whiddon Wingshooting in Argentina, a condo on Cudjoe Key, a Ford Plantation discovery trip, a pheasant tower shoot, a Pig Pickin’ Party for 30, an oyster roast for 20 and much more.

“We are so grateful for the community’s support of the sporting clays tournament, which has grown in both scope and appeal over the past decade,” said Bethesda Academy president Dr. Michael Hughes. “Proceeds from this event provide critical funds which allow us to ensure that cost is never a hindrance to a family’s ability to send their son to Bethesda Academy.”

Horizons Savannah Announces Grab a Bag for Kids Event, Charity Luncheon and Purse Auction

(SAVANNAH, GA) Horizons Savannahannounces the 6th annual charity luncheon and purse auction called, Grab a Bag for Kids, will take place on Friday, November 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Savannah Golf Club, located at 1661 E President St.

New for 2018, the event will host pop-up shops from Kendra Scott and Charleston Shoe Company with a portion of the sales benefiting Horizons. Featured bags includes gently-used vintage and new designer handbags, bags from new local designer Garland Bags, clutches, evening bags, totes, beach bags and leather backpacks.

A silent auction will kick off the event at 11 a.m. with lunch being served at noon. The tickets are $35 per person or $350 for a table of 10.

“This is the must-attend event of the Fall season,” said Christy Edwards, Horizons SavannahExecutive Director. “It’s a fun lunch that brings together our community to support Horizons Savannah, shop for some beautiful handbags, and new this year even purchase some great shoes and jewelry to match!”

Grab a Bag for Kids offers sponsorship opportunities for businesses as well. The different levels include Prada at $250, Dior at $500 and Chanel at $1,000. (SAVANNAH, GA) Bethesda Academy will hold the 10th annual Sporting Clays Tournament on Friday, Oct. 19 at the Forest City Gun Club, located at 9203 Ferguson Ave. All sponsorship and event proceeds will benefit Bethesda’s scholarship program for young men in grades six through twelve.

The tournament includes a wild game lunch and wild game hors d’oeuvres cocktail reception, both prepared by chef Kirk Blaine. In addition, participants may attend a safety and shooting clinic.

Registration opens at 11 a.m.; lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. The safety and shooting clinic will take place at 12:45 p.m. and the tournament will begin at 1 p.m.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire Announces Fifth Annual Wine Women & Shoes Fundraiser Set for May 3

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Fifth Annual Wine Women & Shoes fundraiser will be held on Thursday, May 3 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Savannah, located at 2 W Bay St. This major fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire benefits families of seriously ill and injured children.

“Last year we raised more than $150 thousand and we have worked hard to help make this year’s fundraiser supporting the Ronald McDonald House our best ever,” said Bill Sorochak, executive director. “We are expecting a sell-out crowd of more than 600 guests for a fabulous evening of sip-sational wines, fabulous shopping, charming ‘Shoe Guys’ and savory foods.”

Kicking off at 6:00 p.m., VIP ticket holders will be allowed early access to the Hyatt’s Harborside Room (the glass room on River Street) to peruse items for sale and get first dibs on the coveted Keys-to-the-Closet and Key-to-the-Cellar raffles. Then, at 7:00 p.m., the doors will open for everyone else to join the festivities.

“We say that this event can change your shoes but its real mission is to change lives,” Sorochak added. “One hundred percent of the funds raised in the Coastal Empire stays here to help our residents cope with the stress and expense of daily living while trying to be close and emotionally strong for their child. In 2017, we provided 4,270 family night stays at the Ronald McDonald House. An event like this can provide 1,600 of those family-night stays.”

Sorochak projects proceeds from this year’s Wine Women & Shoes may top previous years due, in part, to the continued support from local McDonald’s restaurant owners and operators as well as the dedication of partners since the event’s inception – Ameris Bank, Dr. Corinne Howington of Low Country Dermatology and Cecilia Russo Marketing.

(SAVANNAH, GA) Joe Marchese, immediate past president of the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society (LDSS) in Savannah, and Ariella Scalese, forecaster for the WSAV Storm Team 3, have been chosen as the emcees for the Hearts for Healing Gala to benefit Faith Equestrian Therapeutic Center. The second annual event will be held on Friday, Feb. 9, at the Tybee Island Wedding Chapel.

Faith Equestrian is a non-profit organization founded to improve the quality of life for children with special needs through therapeutic interaction with horses at the center.

Marchese, who has years of experience in the differently abled community, will help guide the night’s activities, which include dinner, dancing, a silent auction and live music from the John Brackett Quartet.

“I am humbled and honored to be presented with this opportunity,” said Marchese. “As a founding board member of the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society, and as a parent of a child with Down Syndrome I have been exposed to the emotional and cognitive challenges faced by children with different abilities and I love what a difference that Faith Equestrian makes in their lives.”

Scalese graduated from Lehigh University, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Earth and Environmental Science and minored in Mass Communication before coming to Savannah to continue her career in broadcasting. Scalese volunteers for a number of organizations including Faith Equestrian.

“Since moving here in 2016, I made it a goal to find local organizations that I’m passionate about and donating my time to them,” said Scalese. “Faith Equestrian has given me so much more than I could ever give to it, and I’m honored to be named an emcee for their annual gala.”

Faith Equestrian serves children with all types of challenges, including autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, learning disabilities and behavioral disorders. Interaction with the horses allows the students to build strength, develop coordination skills and gain confidence in an outdoor and supportive setting.

2018 Hearts for Healing Gala

“Fundraisers and donations cover all the costs for a child to participate in our program,” said Bonnie Rachael, the program’s founder and executive director. “The Gala is our largest fundraiser and a great way for us to create awareness for our unique program.”

Rachael opened the center in 2006 with only two students, three horses and a $25,000 budget. Today, the program has expanded to serve more than 125 participants from Chatham, Effingham and surrounding counties. It has a $200,000 budget, eleven horses, two instructors and more than 60 volunteers.

The center is accredited by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH, Intl.), which reports some of the benefits of equine assisted activities and therapies on their website (www.pathintl.org).

Faith Equestrian serves children with all types of challenges, including autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, learning disabilities and behavioral disorders. Interaction with the horses allows the students to build strength, develop coordination skills, and gain confidence in an outdoor and supportive setting.

Michael, an autistic child whose real name is being withheld to protect the privacy of he and his family, began taking therapeutic riding lessons at Faith Equestrian in 2011 in an effort to improve his attention span, his ability to follow directions, keep calm in new situations, as well as to become able to speak.

Part of Michael’s lesson each week was to encourage speech as part of the therapeutic plan along with following directions of steering the horse. The instructor repeated phrases telling Michael to tell his horse to “walk on” and increased the speed of the horse from a walk to a trot.

“It took 8 months, patience and a horse, for Michael to begin to speak,” said Rachael. “During the normal routine of his riding lesson, he said ‘WALK ON’ himself in a loud voice. Everyone, volunteers and mom alike broke into tears of joy.”

Since that day, Michael has improved cognitively, behaviorally, and physically. He has begun using sign language he has learned, is now beginning to steer his horse and follow the instructor’s directions.

“These are the types of stories that help us know we are changing people’s lives,” said Rachael. “And we need the community to support this powerful program.”

Park Place Outreach Youth Emergency Shelter Announces Celebration of Love Gala, Feb. 2

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Park Place Outreach Youth Emergency Shelter will hold its 2018 Celebration of Love Gala to commemorate its 33rd anniversary on Friday, Feb. 2, at the Landings Plantation Club on Skidaway Island.

The evening will start with dinner and a silent auction at 6 p.m. with Kristin King on harp and Sinisa Ciric on violin, followed by a recognition/award ceremony when the Park Place Outreach Youth Emergency Shelter Volunteer of the Year will be announced.

“We look forward to celebrating another excellent year,” said 2018 gala chairwoman Betsy Bratz, who’s vice president of the Park Place Outreach board of directors.

Dinner is $125; a table for 10 is $1,200. Event partners and sponsors, as well as individuals and groups, are invited to participate in the silent and live auctions.

“We hope to have sports memorabilia, trips and donations similar to what we’ve had in the past,” Bratz said.

Park Place operates with funding from grants, community partners and sponsors who host fund-raising events. Past galas have raised as much as $48,500.

Park Place Outreach Youth Emergency Shelter, 514 E. Henry St., provides temporary shelter support for troubled children and teens in Savannah and the surrounding area.
