Bethesda Academy Announces Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Newly Renovated Pavilion

Bethesda Academy Announces Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Newly Renovated Pavilion by the Barnbuilders

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Bethesda Barnbuilders, a local volunteer group, will finish work in March on a newly renovated pavilion for students and guests at Bethesda Academy. The school will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the completed structure on Monday, March 19 at 11:30 a.m. The event is open to the public and a light lunch will be served.

The Barnbuilders are doubling the size of the pavilion and adding a screened-in area. The group built the picnic pavilion in 2000 and have been expanding and improving it since.

The pavilion will be used for school functions and will be available for guests to rent for events.

“The Barnbuilders have a special place on Bethesda’s campus,” said Mike Hughes, president of Bethesda Academy. “Our students and faculty have watched this group dedicate Monday mornings to our school for the last 20 years, and these men are a true example of hard work and genuine character for our young men.”

The Bethesda Barnbuilders have met at Bethesda Academy every Monday since 1998. On average, 12 men work on various projects at the school each Monday between 8 a.m. and noon. The group consists primarily of retired men who live on Skidaway Island. This year, the group received a grant from the Landings Landlovers to offset costs of the pavilion renovations.

As Bethesda’s Maintenance Director, Beau Lynah did an analysis a few years ago to value the work completed annually by the Barnbuilders and believes a conservative estimate is right around $200,000 each year. Projects completed by the Barnbuilders include, among others, a repair of the alumni cottage, an athletic trainer suite and new football lockers for the JV team.

Jeff’s Beverage Hires The Dewitt Tilton Group to Build New 12,304-Square-Foot Facility

Jeff’s Beverage Hires The Dewitt Tilton Group to Build New 12,304-Square-Foot Facility

Groundbreaking Ceremony on New Project in Richmond Hill Scheduled for Dec. 19

(RICHMOND HILL, GA) Jeff’s Beverage has announced plans to have the Dewitt Tilton Group build a new 12,304-square-foot store for the Richmond Hill area. A groundbreaking ceremony will be held Tuesday, Dec. 19, at 11 a.m. at 3945 Hwy 17 in Richmond Hill.

Jeff’s Beverage will occupy 8,104 sq.ft. of the new building with the remaining 4,200 sq.ft. of space available for lease. “This building is directly located on Highway 17 in very close proximity to Interstate 95 with excellent road frontage, visibility, high traffic counts and is easily accessible from the highway,” said Kathy Nielsen, who owns the store with her son, Jeff. “The building has been designed for a multitude of occupants and we are looking for the perfect business to attract local residents as well as those traveling north and south on I-95.”

Jeff’s Beverage will have an open floor plan with a humidor, custom coolers and storage along with office space, restrooms and a private second story conference room. The space available for leasing will remain unfinished for a future tenant.

“With this new facility, we are expecting to bring new inventory, new jobs and economic growth to one of the Southeast’s largest wine, beer and spirits stores,” continued Nielsen.

The company’s co-owner and founder, Jeff began working in the alcohol industry while in college before deciding he wanted to “start his own.” With the help of his parents, his business idea became reality. “We are still growing and going strong after 17 years now,” said Nielsen, “We believe a big contributing factor to our success is how involved Jeff and I are in the day-to-day operations, as well as the support we’ve received from the great community of Richmond Hill and surrounding areas.”

The Dewitt Tilton Group of Savannah will begin construction immediately, and the project is scheduled to be completed in July 2018.

“We’re really excited about this project,” said Chris Tilton, co-owner of The Dewitt Tilton Group. “It is important to us to create a building that suited the brand of Jeff’s Beverage.”

How to Protect Construction Sites during Hurricane Season

How to Protect Construction Sites during Hurricane Season

By Chris Tilton, co-founder, Dewitt Tilton Group

Hurricane Irma is probably a memory to most, but hurricane season lasts until November 30, and for builders, the weather plays a major role in any construction plan.

If you have not already done so, now is the time to put a hurricane safety plan into place for any construction site. Having a clear strategy ready to go reduces the risk of unnecessary damage, helps prevent injuries on the site and gives you peace of mind.

Let’s start with the basics.

A hurricane watch is issued when a storm is expected to arrive within 48 hours, and a warning is issued when tropical storm conditions are within 36 hours. When a hurricane watch is announced, it’s time to put your plan in place and prepare the construction site.

Steps for Creating a Contingency Plan
The first step is to create a checklist for areas and equipment in need of protection. This list will most likely include tools, heavy equipment, generators, fuel tanks, portable toilets and other materials that cannot be moved to an inside location. Be sure each item on the check list is assigned to a specific member of the team and take time to review the checklist prior to any potential threats.

Your contingency plan should also include a communications piece. In addition to notifying your on-site team, subcontractors should be notified that the site is halting all work until further notice.

Planning for large amounts of water is key to any plan. Heavy rains and flooding are leading causes of damage to construction sites. It is imperative that any construction site is equipped with permanent and temporary drainage systems to maintain the structural stability of the area.

If there are vehicles on the site, they should be moved to higher ground and away from structures that could be damaged. Plus, consider filling the tanks on these vehicles prior to any hurricane or storm.

One of the last but most crucial steps is to turn off access points for all utilities. Now is also the time to remove any project documents from the construction trailer and secure them to an offsite location. As you leave the site, snap a few photos on your phone for future reference. These may come in handy if any items are missing or damaged after the fact.

After Effects
Any good contingency plan will include necessary steps for clean-up and getting back in business after a hurricane. Once you return to the site, assess and document any damage, giving special attention to downed power lines, unstable structures or wet electrical panels. Items to have on hand include cleaning supplies and fuel for vehicles. Finally contact the appropriate utilities and contact your insurance carrier for any assessment needs.

It’s important that all construction companies have a written hurricane preparation plan. Ideally, the plan will be detailed with specific assignments and action deadlines. And during hurricane season, be sure to monitor the weather on a regular basis.

This type of preparation does require added cost, effort and time but can be extremely valuable in the long run and may be your best investment. If construction managers follow these outlined steps and provide clear communication, any site will be up and running considerably quicker and suffer much less loss.

The Dewitt Tilton Group Donates New BBQ Pit Roof to Savannah Jaycees

The Dewitt Tilton Group Donates New BBQ Pit Roof to Savannah Jaycees

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Dewitt Tilton Group, a commercial construction firm in Savannah, donated their services to the Savannah Jaycees to rebuild a BBQ pit roof that fell during stormy weather. Guerry Lumber, a Lumber Company that has served Savannah since 1927, and ABC Supply, the largest wholesale distributor of roofing in the United States, have also donated materials to the project.

The Jaycees include young business professionals dedicated to leadership growth through community involvement. As the only Jaycees chapter in the state with their own office, the Savannah Jaycees use their building for meetings, events and leadership speakers.

The BBQ pit roof often serves as an outdoor shelter for the group’s community activities, such as the Surging Forward Picnic, which was held for first responders and firefighters during Hurricane Matthew cleanup.

Since it was damaged by the hurricane and the storms this spring, the Jaycees have been unable to reassemble and secure the roof. So The Dewitt Tilton group reached out to them and offered to rebuild and install a new roof.

“I have seen the culture of altruistic service and progressive thinking the Savannah Jaycees promotes in our community,” said Dewitt Tilton partner Chris Tilton. “They give so much to Savannah, so when the opportunity presented itself to give back to their group, we jumped on it.”

Jaycees president Cynthia Wright said the roof could not have been reinstalled without help.

“We are so thankful that the Dewitt Tilton Group saw our need and chose to show their support for our organization with a project that will serve us both now and in the future,” Wright said.

Felder & Associates Receives Two 2017 Preservation Awards from Historic Savannah Foundation

Felder & Associates Receives Two 2017 Preservation Awards from Historic Savannah Foundation
Savannah Architecture Firm Honored for Work on Atlantic and Vic’s on the River

(SAVANNAH, GA) Felder & Associates, a Savannah architecture firm, has received two Historic Savannah Foundation 2017 Preservation Awards for their rehabilitation projects for two of the city’s best-known upscale restaurants, the Atlantic and Vic’s on the River.

Both projects were recognized for their preservation of history.

Atlantic, 102 E. Victory Drive, opened initially in 1930 as the Atlantic Refining Company Service Station for car washing and servicing.

Vic’s on the River, 12-42 E. Bay St., which opened as Stoddard’s Range, was designed and built in 1859 by John Norris under the supervision of John Stoddard.

MORE INFORMATION ON THE ATLANTIC REVITALIZATION
The Atlantic Refining Company Service Station on the corner of Victory Drive and Drayton Street was renovated into professional offices in 1965 when the structure lost some of its original architecture.

Thirty years later, the space gained a new owner and underwent remodeling until 2015 when the current owner and general manager, Jason Restivo, bought the property. Brian Felder from Felder & Associates and Restivo worked together to revitalize the original structure. To comply with site restrictions and zoning regulations, a low concrete wall with benches and planters was built to create a gathering space for guests to socialize around a central fire pit. Outdoor seating also is nestled under a large oak tree with intimate custom lighting.

The primary interior area occupies the former portico and seats about 40 guests. Exposed brick and rafters, concrete flooring, and fresh new colors create a dual ambiance of traditional and modern.

MORE INFORMATION ON THE VIC’S ON THE RIVER REVITALIZATION
The space at Vic’s on the River has been home to a variety of businesses since it was built in 1859. Vic’s eventually came to occupy two of the bays on the third, fourth and fifth levels of the building and now fills three more stories of an adjacent bay as well.

The ironwork balconies and railings replicate their historic precedents. The openness of the bay was preserved through dividing walls. All historic lath and plaster, as well as wrought iron surrounds, were saved and restored. The owner also rebuilt fireplaces to match the original designs.
