Jolene Byrne, a candidate for Savannah Chatham County School Board president, was honored as a COMMUNITY STAR Friday during a tribute ceremony at Savannah Technical College

SAVANNAH GA (March 28, 2014) – Jolene Byrne, a candidate for Savannah Chatham

County School Board president, was honored as a COMMUNITY STAR Friday during a

tribute ceremony at Savannah Technical College. Byrne was singled out among twenty

honorees for her service and dedication at work and in the community, while raising

funds for the Savannah Tech Foundation scholarship fund.

Byrne was praised for her dedication and contributions to public education, her

volunteer contributions through the West Broad YMCA, The Junior League, The

Savannah Children’s Choir, The Deep Center, the Inner City Night Shelter and her efforts

organizing children’s health awareness events.

Byrne’s career in education was also commended. She has taught at Groves High

School, The Coastal Comprehensive Academy, Savannah State University and Armstrong

Atlantic State University.

Howard Morrison said of Byrne: “Jolene is a team player who has the unique ability to

listen and lead diverse groups of individuals and organizations in working together to

achieve common goals.”

“This event has become a wonderful tradition for our community,” said STC’s Executive

Director of Institutional Advancement and Communication Gail Eubanks. “The people

being honored are amazing, and the sponsors are very generous. Because funds raised

support scholarships, Savannah Technical College students benefit directly.”

Byrne’s nomination was sponsored by Friends of Public Education, a growing group of

enthusiastic citizens in Chatham County, who are dedicated to continuing the positive

improvements in public education in Chatham County that have been achieved under

the leadership of Dr. Thom Lockamy, President Joe Buck, and the eight individual

members of the School Board.
