Merger Confirmed for Neighboring Boy Scout Councils

(SAVANNAH, GA.)  The Coastal Empire Council, Boy Scouts of America and the Okefenokee Area Council, Boy Scouts of America have announced that they are combining forces to form a new Coastal Georgia Council. Merger of the two Councils will enhance Scouting in the region by strengthening programs and better utilizing each Council’s resources, making the new larger Council the premiere Scouting organization in this area.  The Coastal Georgia Council now serves 22 counties and boasts two fully operational camps, Black Creek Scout Reservation in Screven County and Camp Tolochee in Glynn County.

Coastal Empire Council Executive Board President, John McKinnon shared these benefits of the merger, “The unanimous vote by the Executive Boards of the two councils on February 25, 2014 approving the merger, sends a clear and concise message that the people responsible for shaping and guiding the newly formed Coastal Georgia Council are 100% dedicated to making this new larger Council a premiere Scouting organization within the Boy Scouts of America.  The ultimate goal and underlying motivation is to reach more youth in our area and introduce them to the values and life skills that Scouting instills through its programs.  We will now have the ability to efficiently, effectively promote our programs on a much larger scale.  The outdoor experiences and camping activities associated with Scouting are dramatically increased by having two camps.  Our vision is to maximize the utilization of these two camps to take advantage of the unique features of each location, thereby providing exceptional experiences for our youth and their families.”

The newly formed Coastal Georgia Council Boy Scouts of America will serve over 9000 young men and women annually through traditional scouting, inner city Scout Reach programs, Learning for Life, and Explorer Post programs. Boy Scouts of America provides the nation’s foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training, which helps young people be ‘Prepared. For Life.’
