5 Tips for Greater Health – by Peter Brodhead
As a Certified Nutritionist CN, and Certified Homeopathy CHom, I believe that some of the things I have picked up over the years might be helpful to those who are now changing their snacking habits to live a healthier lifestyle. So here are a few of the tips that I will be going over in the 2014 Encourage Health Educational Lecture Series. These are tips I wish someone had given me when I first started a natural diet.
1. Incorporate as many colors of food into your diet. Natural colors of fruits and vegetables can tell us much about their health benefits. Did you know that the color Red is an indicator of lycopene, found in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as paprika, cayenne pepper, red bell peppers, watermelons, and papayas. Lycopene is a natural way to prevent breast cancer and prostate cancer, and is associated with lowering hypertension i.e.. high blood pressure. Hibiscus Tea has been found to lower high blood pressure.
2. Want the secret to prolonging life? Get a little nutty. No seriously, a study, published in the British Medical Journal, found that ‘Eating More Nuts’ each day has lowered the death rate of participants by 20 percent. The high concentration of minerals and other beneficial compounds in nuts provide significant health benefits.
3. ‘Proper Hydration’ goes way beyond mere water. For instance, Green Tea has EGCG which has been known to support weight loss. Also, Green Tea has an ingredient that helps asthmatic symptoms. Cancer research suggests that this tea also stimulates cellular suicide in cancer cells. Green Tea has many brain benefits as well. There is a natural amino acid L-Theanine that help the brain keep calm and focused by increasing alpha waves.
4. It’s common knowledge that protein is vital to human health. ‘Clean Protein’ refers to beef that is from grass-fed cows rather than corn fed that can contain anti-biotic residues or genetically-modified substances. Grass-fed cow meat has a higher level of omega 3 and CLA which is the good kinds of fat that are anti-inflammatory. The meat has no left over residue, such as hormones or antibiotics.
5. Remember to ‘Spice It Up’. Black pepper enhances the absorption of all your foods. Cayenne pepper enables a fat hormone adiponectin to help manage weight. There are major benefits of incorporating more intense spices, like Turmeric, Paprika, Rosemary, Sage, and many others found in most home spice racks into cooking.
The smallest changes to a person’s diet can have the greatest impact.

Peter Brodhead will speak on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the Encourage Health Educational Series from 11:30 a.m. to 1 pm at the Savannah Morning News Auditorium. Enmark has sponsored with Healthy Savannah, the Savannah Morning News, Savannah Magazine and WJCL, to present this premier series of five wellness lectures benefiting local nonprofit organizations focused on Wellness. The first nonprofit to benefit from ticket sales will be the West Broad Street YMCA. They will also be raising funds during “Enmark Dollar Day” on Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Enmark Station, located at 7406 Waters Ave., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.. There will be opportunities for West Broad Street YMCA to receive $1 for every car wash, $1 at their charity table and $1 donations will be accepted at the cash registers.
