Savannah SCORE to Host ‘Simple Steps for Starting Your Business’ Workshops in March

(SAVANNAH, GA) Savannah SCORE announces the ‘Simple Steps for Starting Your Business’ Series will be presented on Wednesday nights, starting March 5, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Conference Classroom SCORE Office, located at 111 East Liberty Street. This comprehensive series of five two-hour workshops is designed to help participants launch a new business.

Experts will present concepts involved with assessing a business idea, including: marketing your product or service, understanding business financials and how they work, and how to fund and finance a business. Each workshop is interactive with examples, supporting resources, and take-away assignments. SCORE mentors will be available to work with individuals outside of class as well.

The first session, “Start-up Basics” will be held March 5. This introductory workshop focuses on the basics of testing your business idea and identifying the key factors that influence start-up success. Start-up Basics will provide you with an overview of the skills and tools you need when deciding to start a business.

The second session will be looking further into the “Business Concept, and will be held March 12. This workshop will provide participants with step-by-step guidance in researching your idea, your market, and your competition. At the end of the Business Concept workshop, you are able to: identify your target markets, describe your products and services, and collect key competitive information to support your feasibility plan.

The “Marketing Plan” will be the focus of the third workshop, taking place on March 19. This will provide you with an introduction to marketing communication methods and tools to maximize your customer reach. The discussion will cover pricing strategies, positioning, the difference between features and benefits, and different marketing strategies. At the end of the session, you will know how to outline your marketing strategy, test you marketing message, choose the right sales channel, and exercise your marketing strategy.

Session four will cover “Financial Projections” on March 26. This workshop will use exercises to help you better understand financial concepts. This session reviews sales and prices, financial risks and rewards, true start-up costs, ongoing operating expenses, setting benchmarks for tracking progress and the organization of all you financial information. Using a hand-on approach, you will learn how to use our financial model to forecast sales revenue and build solid pro-forma financial forecasts.

The final session will cover “Funding Sources”, and will close the series out on April 2. This workshop will offer information on how to finance your small business. In this session, discussions include: sources of funds, accounting, the six C’s of credit, banking relations, ratio analysis, and monthly preparation and review of financial statements. A bank loan officer will give an inside view of how a banker assesses the merits of business plans and loan application.
