What:    Ossabaw Island’s beach and night sky come alive on New Year’s Eve during an overnight trip featuring an afternoon island and beach tour and a sky watching/astronomy program after dinner. Plus a midnight champagne toast to welcome 2014!
When:  Tuesday, December 31, 2013 (2:00pm) – Wednesday, January 1, 2014 (approx. 11:00am)

Fees:     Fees include round trip transportation from Skidaway Island’s Delegal Creek Marina to Ossabaw Island, the nature and astronomy programming, dinner, midnight champagne (over 21 only) and snacks, breakfast, and overnight accommodation in the Clubhouse (dormitory style), the Boarding House (semi-private rooms), or tent camping with full access to showers and restrooms (bring your own tent).

Who should attend:
This trip is designed for adults and for children age 12 and over. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or supervising adult.
Registration deadline:
Thursday, Dec. 26, 5:00pm or until sold out.
Details: Depart by boat from Delegal Creek Marina Tuesday afternoon for the 30 minute trip to Ossabaw. After settling into your accommodations, take an interpretive driving tour across the island to the beach, led by naturalist John Crawford. Or spend the afteRnoon relaxing at the Clubhouse or exploring the island’s North End on your own.   Following dinner, experience the universe and beyond as astronomer Laura Lawton leads a sky watching program on Ossabaw’s North End.  Learn how to identify constellations, and hear the legends associated with them. Marvel at the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies, and peer through an eight-inch reflecting telescope to see the moons of Jupiter. Then, enjoy more legends (others’ or your own!) around a nighttime campfire. You’ll return to the mainland on Wednesday after breakfast.

Ossabaw Island is a 26,000-acre undeveloped barrier island on the Atlantic Ocean, owned by the State of Georgia and located in Chatham County. Georgia’s first Heritage Preserve, accessible only by boat, is undeveloped and set aside by an Executive Order for natural, scientific and cultural study, research and education; and for environmentally sound preservation, conservation and management of the island’s ecosystem.
