URGENT REQUEST FOR DONATIONS: GOODWILL OF SAVANNAH

Posted by mysavannah on July 29, 2012

COMMUNITY HEADLINE:

(SAVANNAH, GA) – Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire is in real need of donations, especially clothing in good condition. More people than ever need its job evaluation and training programs to get back to work; more people now need to shop at its affordable stores, which provide the funding for those job programs; and yet fewer people are donating items to Goodwill so it can stock its stores. Corporations wishing to do donation drives should contact Steve Bellmoff at (912) 663-0786. Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire, Inc. is dedicated to the mission of assisting people with disabilities and other barriers to employment to live independently and become employed.

Goodwill needs more donations, soon

More shoppers and fewer donations put a hurt on the non-profit, which uses store proceeds to fund mission of helping people with employment barriers get jobs.

(SAVANNAH, GA) – For most stores, high demand is good news. For Goodwill, it’s a challenge.

Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire is in real need of donations, especially clothing in good condition.

Goodwill is in a Catch-22 of the faltering economy. More people than ever need its job evaluation and training programs to get back to work; more people now need to shop at its affordable stores, which provide the funding for those job programs; and yet fewer people are donating items to Goodwill so it can stock its stores.

“Donations to Goodwill change lives by providing the funds for people to get training and get a job,” said Coni Curtas, Vice President of Donated Goods for Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire. “It’s amazing how much Goodwill helps the community by helping people get a job and become more independent.”

The large majority of every dollar raised by Goodwill is spent fulfilling its mission of helping people with disabilities and other barriers to employment find a job. Those programs won’t be able to help as many people if the stores don’t have enough inventory.

“As federal and state funding continues to shrink, funding to assist people in need of our services shrinks as well,” Curtas said. “Additionally, donors are facing tough times and are holding on to what would have been donations for longer and longer periods of time.”

The emergence of for-profit salvage dealers posingas charitable agencies is causing more of a drop in the number of donations, Curtas said.

“Their ‘donation boxes’ are intentionally displayed and worded to give a casual observer the impression of charitable intent,” Curtas said. “This diverting of donations has a direct, negative impact on the number of charitable donations Goodwill receives and consequently, the amount of services we are able to provide.”

August is often a high-demand month for Goodwill stores, and so September often has a dip in inventory as a result.  The stores are having to start this busy season with fewer donations and Goodwill worries how much their programs will be affected by lower funding.

“Goodwill’s services are all highly dependent upon the generous donations of our community – services that support people with disAbilities to enter the labor market, provide mentoring of at-riskyouth; employment, training and support services for homeless veterans; outreach, education and employment services for immigrants and our ADVANCE acquired brain injury program,” said Nicholas C. Pecone, Vice President, Workforce Development.

This past year, Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire provided services to 18,916 people and placed 644 individuals into employment.  Through May of this year, it has provided services to 11,004 individuals and provided 643 with employment assistance.

“Without the revenue generated from donations to our retail operations, this would not be possible,” Pecone said.

Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire employs nearly 600 people throughout the coastal region. Goodwill’s Job Connection employment centers are especially needed in some areas where there is little other employment help.

Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire processes more than 386,000 donations of used goods every year. Through its partnership with Dell, Goodwill can help donors recycle computers and related items in an environmentally safe way.

The need for Goodwill’s services has increased, and Goodwill has been helping more people, going to more places, and adding services in the past few years.

Corporations wishing to do donation drives should contact Steve Bellmoff at (912) 663-0786.

Goodwill has 14 stores from Ridgeland, S.C. out to Vidalia and down to St. Marys, Ga. All stores and Goodwill’s attended donation centers can accept donations. Donation forms for your taxes are available.

Posted by mysavannah on July 9, 2012

MEDIA ALERT: PRIVATE GRAND OPENING by invitation and for
media is Wednesday, July 18, 5:30-7:30 p.m. The PUBLIC grand opening is
Thursday, July 19, 10 a.m. Call 912-663-0685. The Waycross Goodwill is located at 2101 Memorial Drive, Waycross.

(WAYCROSS, Ga.) – Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire, Inc. is opening a free
community career center, Job Connections; and a retail location in Waycross. The grand opening
will be Thursday, July 19 at 10 a.m. The Waycross Goodwill is located at
2101 Memorial Drive, Waycross.

The career center and retail store will consist of 12,000 square feet and employ 25 local
residents. The store will be open to the public July 19 at 10 a.m. with a full selection of
merchandise. Throughout the Grand Opening there will be door prizes and drawings. A drive-
through donation center will be accepting gently used donations. These donations are used to
fund Goodwill’s Workforce Development programs.

Job Connections offers many free resources and services to both employers and job seekers.
For example, Goodwill offers applicant screening. Employers can provide Goodwill with job
descriptions and Goodwill can match qualified applicants out of their database for the employer
to interview. Goodwill can also provide office space for interviewing and job fairs at no charge.

Resources, technology and support services have been designed to help job seekers secure and
maintain employment. The center will be a resource for job searches, offering help with resumes
and interviewing skills, as well as a phone bank, printer, and copier. Educational seminars will
also help with job skills as well as areas such as health and wellness and financial well-being.

“We talk to employers and match their needs to our services,” said Brenda Pollen, Director of
Workforce Development for Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire. “We find the areas

where employers see a need and tailor our programs to that.” For example, at another Job
Connections location Pollen discovered that many job seekers lacked computer skills, so Job
Connections started offering computer classes.

Goodwill will be offering a resume writing class and working with job seekers to develop
interviewing skills so that job applicants feel confident when they walk into an interview. There
will also be networking opportunities and job fairs, and applicants will be able to view job
postings that are available in the community.

ABOUT OSTEOPOROSIS
Osteoporosis is a major public health threat for an estimated 44 million
Americans. In the U.S., 10 million individuals are estimated to already
have the disease and almost 34 million more are estimated to be at
risk. Of the 10 million Americans estimated to have osteoporosis,
eight million are women and two million are men. Significant risk has
been reported in people of all ethnic backgrounds, and the disease
can strike at any age, despite the common misconception that it only
affects older people. Osteoporosis can be prevented, and if diagnosed
early, can be treated.

During the Lunch With a Doctor event, Baker and Gordon will offer
information on the impact of osteoporosis, risk factors, bone density
screenings, lifestyle and treatment options, and fall and fracture
prevention strategies. In addition, participants will be provided with
educational material about the disease and have an opportunity to
participate in a question-and-answer session with regional healthcare
providers. A light, calcium-rich lunch, provided as a community service
by the Women’s Information Network Inc., in collaboration with the
Valdosta Lowndes Parks and Recreation Authority, will be served.

Baker has served as founder and president of the Women’s
Information Network since 1991. The nonprofit organization seeks
to educate and empower women about health and wellness through
information and networking. She has also served as a clinical nurse
practitioner and compliance officer for New Horizons Treatment
