(Savannah, GA) $40,000 Medical Grant Awarded by ‘Liam Land’ to Gresham Richter, MD for Research into Lymphatic Malformations.

Posted by mysavannah on May 31, 2012

Vascular Anomalies Medical Expert Receives Debut Liam’s Land Grant of $40,000 for
Lymphatic Malformation Research

LEFT TO RIGHT::
Janet Steffen, Executive Director and founder of LLO, Angie Barton Mixon, Jerry Barton,Lydia Barton, and Dr. Wm Ralston IV. Jerry and Lydia’s grand_daughter died from LM Angie is Aunt to Kathyn and daughter to Jerry and Lydia

LITTLE ROCK, AR. (May 4, 2012)/SAVANNAH, GA (May 30, 2012) – A
vascular anomalies expert at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital Research
Institute (ACHRI) and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences
(UAMS) is the inaugural recipient of a medical grant from Liam’s Land,
a non-profit founded in Savannah, Georgia that champions research into
lymphatic malformations.
Gresham Richter, MD, a surgeon and researcher on the ACH campus, will
receive the $20,000 Kathryn Barton Hobbs Medical Grant funded by
Liam’s Land each of the next two years to continue his investigations
into the causes of lymphatic malformations; research geared to finding
treatment options and prevention strategies. Dr. Richter is also an
associate professor of Pediatric Otolaryngology in the UAMS College of
Medicine.
“Children with lymphatic malformations deserve more answers and a
cure,” Richter said. “We are excited to have Liam’s Land as a resource
to help kids affected by this disorder.”
Lymphatic malformations are clusters of channels and cysts that fill
with a type of fluid that is difficult for the vascular system to
process, resulting in intense swelling. They typically develop in the
neck or underarm areas, though they may affect any part of the body.
Researchers have yet to find a cause of lymphatic malformations,
though there is evidence they begin during fetal development. More
than 1 in 4,000 children are born with lymphatic malformations, and
they usually undergo dozens of surgeries before adulthood and can
suffer breathing and eating impairments as well as levels of
deformity.
The program where Richter works at ACHRI is one of only a few in the
world dedicated to identifying a cure for lymphatic malformations and
other vascular anomalies affecting children.
“Identifying what drives lymphatic malformation growth is vital
information. If Dr. Richter and his lab can identify what promotes
this development, there is great hope for finding an antidote to stop
growth and cure this challenging disease,” said Janet Steffen, RN,
founder and executive director of Liam’s Land Organization (501c3).
The Steffens’ son, Liam, was born with lymphatic malformation in 2010.
Just over 2 years old, Liam has already endured multiple surgeries and
MRIs. The organization’s first grant is named in honor of Kathryn
Barton Hobbs, who lost her life to lymphatic malformation more than 10
years ago.

In addition, Steffen has launched an international LM registry to
track the incidence and prevalence of LM as well as examining medical,
environmental, and workplace exposures to parents while pregnant.
The registry will also help track outcomes in order to insure proper
medical treatment and care.  Steffen reports that many physicians may
see LM once in their career and not be fully experienced in treatment.
Unfortunately this can lead to poor outcomes.   Steffen stresses that
parents ultimately seek physicians and institutions that care for many
LM cases.  It is her hope that Liam’s Land will be a resource for
prestigious multi-institutional children hospitals in their work
developing “stands of care and best practice” to encourage proper
treatment and procedures for lymphatic malformation patients
everywhere.

“We are excited about funding ACHRI and UAMS’s research.  Dr.
Richter’s initial success is already a beacon of hope for those with
lymphatic malformation, “stated Steffen.  Arkansas Children’s Hospital
is the only pediatric medical center in Arkansas and one of the
largest in the United States serving children from birth to age 21.
The campus is celebrating 100 years of providing Care, Love and Hope
in 2012.  The private, nonprofit healthcare facility boasts an
internationally renowned reputation for medical breakthroughs and
intensive treatments, unique surgical procedures and forward-thinking
medical research – all dedicated to fulfilling our mission of
enhancing, sustaining and restoring children’s health and development.

ACHRI provides a research environment on the ACH campus to meet the
needs of the UAMS faculty. Research scientists at ACHRI conduct
clinical, basic science, and health services research for the purpose
of treating illnesses, preventing disease and improving the health of
children everywhere.
For more information about lymphatic malformation and the work Liam’s
Land is providing to find the cause, treatment, and cure, go to

(Savannah, GA) Dazhong WU receives American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
Southeast District F Special Recognition Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Savannah, GA) Dazhong Wu, a Ph.D. candidate in mechanical engineering at the Georgia
Institute of Technology, was recently awarded the ASME Southeast District F Special
Recognition Award for 2011-2012. Special Recognition Award is to recognize individuals
who have taken a leadership role and have demonstrated the commitment and enthusiasm
to accomplish, in an outstanding manner, a specific program or activity in support of the
District.

Wu has been a student member of ASME since 2009. He was the Chairman of ASME
Savannah section and played a vital role in its revitalization from Spring 2010 to Fall
2011, wherein the ASME Savannah section, had been inactive for a number of years. With
respect to revitalizing the ASME Savannah section, Dazhong worked vigorously upon being
Chairman of ASME Savannah section. He played multiple key roles during the revitalization,
which went above and beyond the expectation from a student member of ASME, as the leader
of ASME Savannah section revitalization project and Chairman of both senior and student
sections. He had a series of outstanding accomplishments that have tremendous impact on the
ASME Savannah section as follows:

In July of 2010, as the 1st milestone, he launched the revitalization project by establishing
the Executive Committee of ASME Savannah section. In order to spread out the latest news
and events at ASME Savannah section, he created the first, well organized and professional
official website for ASME Savannah. In order to get student members ready to enter into
the job market, Dazhong initiated a technical seminar series, called “Seminar for Success”,
with a focus on career path development and equipping students with technical skills for
entering into the market. In July of 2011, inspired by Present Obama’s new policy “No Child
Left Behind”, Dazhong launched a collaborative project with a local home school, Kingdom
Builders Homeschool Co-op (http://kingdombuilderscoop.com/) usually dealing with children
between the ages of 10 to 14 years. The purpose of the this fellowship was to provide free
technical training workshops at Georgia Tech campus for the first LEGO League Robotics
Competition and provide partial sponsorship for one of the teams. The ASME Savannah
sponsored team won the Mechanical Design Award at this year’s local first Lego League
Robotics Competition.

Fondarific: The SBA has named Savannah Business Owners Laura Darnall and Lois Judy, 2012 Georgia Small Business Persons of the Year

Posted by mysavannah on May 16, 2012

SBA Names Savannah Business Owners
2012 Georgia Small Business Persons of the Year

ATLANTA– The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has named Laura Darnall and Lois Judy,
Co-Owners of Candy Craft Creations, the Georgia Small Business Persons of the Year for 2012. They
were nominated by Connie Edwards and Lynn Vos of the Georgia Small Business Development
Center in Savannah.

Candy Craft Creations manufactures and distributes Fondarific; a new type of fondant which offers
improved ease of use as well as a pleasing taste. Fondant has long been used by chefs and bakers to
create the smooth malleable icing that forms round edges. It is rolled into a uniform thickness and
laid over cakes. It is also used for detail work such as making intricate flowers.

Small Business Person of the Year winners from 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico
and Guam will converge in Washington, D.C. May 20 -22, 2012 to mark the annual celebration of
National Small Business Week. One of them will be selected as National Small Business Person of the
Year.

The criteria for the award include: Staying power – a substantiated history as an established
business, growth in number of employees, innovativeness of product/service offered, response to
adversity and contributions to community-oriented projects.

With its special qualities, food channel exposure and endorsements by some of the country’s top
chefs and cake artists, it is not an understatement that Fondarific has taken the confectionery world
by storm. In five short years the company has moved from a 10 by 14 foot fabricated building in
Laura Darnall’s back yard into a 10,000 square foot manufacturing and distribution center with 28
full time employees.

Such rapid growth often creates big challenges for new companies. So Laura and Lois turned to the
Georgia Small Business Development Center (SBDC) area office in Savannah to help them manage
critical issues such as cash flow, receivables and inventory growth, just to name a few. And even
more recently the team has been working with the SBDC Export Division to pursue international
markets. Soon the whole world will be in on their “Fondarific” product.

The company was recognized at a luncheon hosted by the Georgia Lender Quality Circle in Atlanta
on May 16. Other Georgia Small Business Week winners are: Financial Services Champion, Colby
Cardin of Columbus; Exporter of the Year, Paresh ‘Perry” Vyas, President of SKAPS Industries of
Athens; Women in Business Champion Judy Randle of Albany; and Susan Taylor, owner of Taylor
Services of Macon, Family Owned Business of the Year.

Contact SBA’s David Perry to coordinate one on one interviews with any of the Georgia Small
Business Week winners 404-331-0267 or david.perry@sba.gov.

OneMain Financial Partners with Area Residents to Give Back to their Community

Clothing Donations Collected for Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire During Customer Appreciation Days

April 30, 2012— OneMain Financial will provide area residents and customers the opportunity to support their local community during its Customer Appreciation Days, May 1-31. Throughout the entire month of May, the OneMain Financial branches in Savannah, Hinesville, Statesboro, Brunswick, Jesup and Vidalia (see list provided at the bottom) and across the United States will collect clothing donations to help support the mission of Goodwill. Local donations will benefit Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire.

OneMain Financial’s partnership with Goodwill reflects the philanthropic and community-oriented mindset engrained in OneMain Financial’s corporate culture. Employees leverage their professional skills and experience by volunteering their time directly to nonprofits and other community organizations.

“Sharing a like-minded vision with Goodwill Industries, OneMain Financial is helping to make the neighborhoods where we do business better places to live and work,” said Mary McDowell, president and CEO of CitiFinancial North America and OneMain Financial. “We have a strong tradition of supporting local organizations that help those in need, and we are excited residents of the Coastal Empire will be joining us in this effort during our Customer Appreciation Days.”

Donors play a vital role in Goodwill’s ability to fulfill its mission of helping people go to work. To pay for its programs, Goodwill sells donated goods including clothing, household items and other used goods in more than 2,600 stores in the United States and Canada, including in 13  in the Coastal Empire as well as online. The revenue collected from each local store stays within that community, providing job training programs, employment placement programs and community-based programs — such as financial education and youth mentoring — for people who face challenges to finding employment. Each local Goodwill designs its own programs to help job seekers and their families in the community.

“Goodwill’s partnership with OneMain Financial will provide a meaningful opportunity to reach its millions of employees and customers, and not only to increase donations, but to engage a new audience of donors and shoppers,” said Coni Curtas, the Vice President of Donated Goods.  “The revenue from the sale of the donations will enable Goodwill to design job training programs that meet the specific needs of job seekers in the region where OneMain Financial is located.”

Goodwill, which is consistently ranked among top charities, collectively, channels 82 percent of its total revenue directly into education and career services. Here in Coastal Empire and throughout the region, 88% is funneled back into community programs. Goodwill revenue is earned via its sales from retail and outlets stores, and online, and is made possible by donations from community members. With spring well underway, local residents can take advantage of spring cleaning and organize their households, all while making a valuable contribution to their community.

OneMain Financial branches are located throughout the region and have been provided below with contact information for further details.
