Goodwill Industries and SEDA to Host Employment Summit on April 23. Goal to Employ 5000 in the area by 2015

(SAVANNAH, GA) Steve Weathers of SEDA and Mohsen Badran of Goodwill Industries, will host an “Employment
Summit” on April 23 at Goodwill Industries HQ (located at 7220 Sallie Mood Drive,
in Savannah, to discuss the following “Work First” initiative:
Initiative Concept: Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire, Inc.
proposes to take the lead in developing a unified approach to
mobilizing state and local government resources, all business sectors
and community based agencies to raise the bar for employment success
by the citizens. Through a concerted effort of the partners, they
propose to achieve an aggressive goal of 5,000 people placed into jobs
by December, 2015.

Partners:

Initial key partners are committed to this project. They include: The City
of Savannah, Live Oak Public Libraries, SEDA, Goodwill Industries of the

Coastal Empire and Step-up Savannah.

Initiative Justification: During the past three (3) years, the
nation and Georgia have been in the throws of the worst economic
recession since the Great Depression. Businesses have downsized and
in some instances closed their doors leaving millions unemployed.

Georgia has been one of the hardest hit states in the country with
unemployment consistently exceeding the national average.
Unemployment rates in Coastal Georgia remain above 8%. Others have been forced to accept part
time employment or employment well below their skill level raising the
number in the labor market considered to be underemployed.
Still others are no longer considered to be in the labor market because
frustration has caused them to stop looking for employment. Poverty
rates have increased dramatically and the number of children residing
in homes below the poverty rate has skyrocketed.
