(SAVANNAH, GA) Employment Summit Held – Goal to Employ 500 in the area by 2015

Posted by mysavannah on April 29, 2012

Employment Summit Held April 23.

Goal to Employ 5000 in the area by 2015

(SAVANNAH, GA) Goodwill Industries and SEDA hosted an Employment Summit on April 23.

Twenty businesses, education and workforce development leaders met at Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire, Inc. to kick off the Work First initiative to get 5,000 unemployed individuals in the Savannah MSA employed between June 1 and December, 2015.

Representatives from Goodwill, the Savannah Economic Development Authority, the Coastal Workforce Investment Board, Georgia Department of Labor, the Live Oak Library system, the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce, Step-up Savannah, Union Mission, United Way of the Coastal Empire and WSAV.  County Commissioner Stone was also an active participant.

Discussion included a number of systemic issues specific to employer needs including: lack of life skills and financial management skills by job seekers, substance abuse, and the lack of specific skills in high demand areas.  The consortium agreed that some of the needs discussed i.e. engaging youth in primary and middle school were beyond the scope of this initiative but perhaps a focus in another venue.

A sub-committee of those in attendance will explore the extent and type of substance abuse employers are encountering.  A second group will look into developing an effective approach to addressing the job readiness of job seekers through engagement of the business sector.  In addition, a major Career Fair will be used to initiate the drive for 5,000 jobs.  Human Resource managers will be invited to a breakfast prior to the event as a means of enlisting their engagement.  It was agreed that the commitment of our business community is essential to success of this endeavor.

Employment Summit to be Held April 23 in Savannah, GA. Goal to Employ 5000

Posted by mysavannah on April 13, 2012

Employment Summit to be Held April 23. Goal to Employ 5000 in the area by 2015

Goodwill Industries and SEDA to Host Employment Summit on April 23. Goal to Employ 5000 in the area by 2015

(SAVANNAH, GA) Steve Weathers of SEDA and Mohsen Badran of Goodwill Industries, will host an “Employment
Summit” on April 23 at Goodwill Industries HQ (located at 7220 Sallie Mood Drive,
in Savannah, to discuss the following “Work First” initiative:
Initiative Concept: Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire, Inc.
proposes to take the lead in developing a unified approach to
mobilizing state and local government resources, all business sectors
and community based agencies to raise the bar for employment success
by the citizens. Through a concerted effort of the partners, they
propose to achieve an aggressive goal of 5,000 people placed into jobs
by December, 2015.

Partners:

Initial key partners are committed to this project. They include: The City
of Savannah, Live Oak Public Libraries, SEDA, Goodwill Industries of the

Coastal Empire and Step-up Savannah.

Initiative Justification: During the past three (3) years, the
nation and Georgia have been in the throws of the worst economic
recession since the Great Depression. Businesses have downsized and
in some instances closed their doors leaving millions unemployed.

Georgia has been one of the hardest hit states in the country with
unemployment consistently exceeding the national average.
Unemployment rates in Coastal Georgia remain above 8%. Others have been forced to accept part
time employment or employment well below their skill level raising the
number in the labor market considered to be underemployed.
Still others are no longer considered to be in the labor market because
frustration has caused them to stop looking for employment. Poverty
rates have increased dramatically and the number of children residing
in homes below the poverty rate has skyrocketed.

They call him “Miracle Murkison”

Posted by mysavannah on April 13, 2012

“Miracle Music” Concert to Benefit Child Recovering from Traumatic Brain Injury

(STATESBORO, GA) Christmas is usually a time of celebration, but for one family, almost became tragic.
In December 2011, The Murkison family was involved in a car accident in rural Bulloch County. Brothers Brian and Ben Murkison, ages 7 and 10, and their grandfather Gene Murkison were airlifted to Memorial Hospital. Ben and Gene were released within a few days, but Brian had a traumatic brain injury.

Friends and family stayed by the Murkisons, offered prayers and held vigils for Brian’s recovery.   After two weeks at the PICU, Doctors did not feel that much more could be done.  Brian checked into the Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro.  Brian’s brother Ben asked for prayers for a Christmas Miracle and things began to change.  He went back to Memorial for a week and in January, Brian was moved to Scottish Rite Hospital’s Comprehensive Rehabilitation Unit. Today, he is back in his home in Atlanta, attending Day Rehab with physical, occupational, and speech therapies daily. {The Miracle Journey continues!}

To help the Murkison family with Brian’s rehabilitation, friends will be holding a benefit concert in Statesboro. The “Miracle Music” concert by Dr. Michael Braz will be held on Saturday, April 21st at the Averitt Center for the Arts Emma Kelly Theater in Statesboro. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door for either {the} 11 am or 3 pm {identical} performances.

In addition to the concert, items are being collected for the silent auction. For information on purchasing tickets or to donate a silent auction item, contact Lori Grice at 912-764-7274.

Question and Answer with AUTHOR BLAISE DISMER L.C.S.W. about Agoraphobia

Posted by mysavannah on April 10, 2012

Q & A for Blaise Dismer

Q. Define agoraphobia.

It is a fear of venturing forth from one’s “safe place” or home. Based upon an
irrational but overwhelming fear, the sufferer feels trapped at home lest he/she
Be engulfed by panic symptoms.

Q. What are some symptoms of agoraphobia?

Fear of crowds
Fear of public transport
Restriction to the home or neighborhood
Social isolation
Unable to leave home alone
Panic attacks

Q. How do I determine if I have agoraphobia?

After experiencing one or more panic attacks, it may begin as a reluctance to
go to certain places, drive a vehicle from home or to use public transportation,
for example. Eventually, it may progress to avoidance behaviors that keep the
victim away from numerous situations and locations. Ultimately, it can resolve to
the complete inability to leave the confines of a house, apartment and to interact
socially in an extremely limited way.

Q. What is the difference between agoraphobia and a panic attack?

A panic attack is a precursor to agoraphobia. It is an “attack” comprised of a
series of frightening physical symptoms worsened by irrational ideas such as fear
of going crazy or impending death. Agoraphobia is an enduring phobic avoidance
pattern characterized by being stuck in one’s home for fear of encountering more
panic attacks.

Q. What are Blaise Dismer’s credentials for discussing agoraphobia?

Blaise Dismer is a recovered agoraphobic as well as a Licensed Clinical Social

Worker (L.C.S.W.). He also has a Masters Degree in Clinical Social Work and
three years additional post-graduate work in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Q. Are there tests to confirm a diagnosis of Agoraphobia?

There are certain cognition tests and anxiety scales which are useful in
identifying certain types of anxiety disorders including panic disorder with
agoraphobia. Generally speaking, the following symptoms are the best indicator,
often more readily identified by friends and family members:

Fear of crowds
Fear of public transport
Restriction to the home or neighborhood
Social isolation
Unable to leave home alone
Panic attacks

Q. What causes agoraphobia?

Specifically, the condition arises as an unconscious response to fear and an
attempt to avoid the unpleasantness and dread associated with panic attacks.
It is difficult to convey the terror associated with experiencing a “full blown”
panic attack. However, the attack itself is thought to be caused by a combination
of factors- some genetic and some learned- that result in a minor (ironically)
malfunction in the “alarm system” of the brain and central nervous system.

Q. Can agoraphobia be cured? How?
Yes! Agoraphobia is a highly treatable condition that can be overcome. A
combination of education about the realities of the condition and a program
of behavioral changes can restore the life of an agoraphobic to normalcy.
Sometimes medication is useful in the initial stages of recovery, in particular.
The help of a trained cognitive-behavioral therapist is especially indicated in
treatment of many anxiety disorders including OCD, PTSD, and social anxiety
disorder.

Q. Are there treatments for agoraphobia/anxiety disorder/panic attacks?

There are a multitude of scientifically verified, successful therapies. They may be
used individually or in combination, based upon the particular symptomology of
the disease and its progression. These include:

Gradual exposure therapy
Cognitive therapy
Systematic desensitization
Stress management and relaxation
Drug treatments
Eye movement desensitization and reprogramming (EMDR)

Q. Where should I go for help if I think I have agoraphobia/anxiety disorder/
panic attacks?
An excellent start would be to visit the website: http://www.paniccure.com. Also,
the Anxiety Disorders Association of America offers a state by state listing of
qualified therapists at http://www.adaa.org.

Q. How have people overcome agoraphobia/anxiety disorder/panic attacks?
Individual recoveries have emerged from a number of sources. Some are
based on science, others on religion or spirituality. Many have been assisted by
friends and family in the motivation to change ingrained, fear-based behaviors.
Neal Sideman lists several examples under the heading,”Stories of Healing” at
http://www.paniccure.com.

Q. What are the symptoms of a panic attack?

There may be both physical and cognitive symptoms. These symptoms can
occur spontaneously at any time, even when the victim is sleeping. Conversely,
they may build gradually as one anticipates or dreads an upcoming event. The
physical ones may include:

Shallow or rapid breathing
Accelerated heart rate
Profuse sweating
Light headedness
Rubbery legs

Thought-based symptoms are known as agoraphobic cognitions and may
include :

• The feeling that you’re going crazy
• Fear that you’re about to die
• The feeling that you’re going to harm yourself
despite not wishing this

Savannah Tall Ships Challenge®
The Savannah Riverfront and Visit Savannah would like to invite you to experience the 2012 Savannah Tall Ships Challenge ® May 3-7.

The festival will feature 14 domestic and international tall ships as well as performances, reenactments, sea shanties, stilt walkers, pirates and more.

To help make this event both successful and a positive experience for all attendees, Savannah Tall Ships Challenge ® is soliciting hundreds of volunteers. We invite you to donate your time and skills with us on this special occasion in Savannah’s maritime history.

Opportunities for general event volunteering includes:

  • Ticketing – Ensure customers have proper ticket to enter.
  • Relief Volunteers – Provides breaks to volunteers, serves as a runner and may fill-in as needed in other event positions.
  • Crowd Control – Control ship lines and assist patrons on and off the ship. Volunteers are dockside or on the ships assisting with the gangways.
  • Kid’s Cove Adventure Area – Assist with children’s activities and entertainment.
  • Runners – Must have valid driver’s license, a vehicle and good knowledge of the Savannah area in order to pick-up and deliver items requested by the ship captains, crew members and/or ship liaisons.
  • Ask Me – Assist visitors with general information about Savannah and the Tall Ships Challenge ®. Good working knowledge of both is essential.
  • Lineman/Sail Away Support – Cast-off lines of ships prior to excursions, this position will require additional orientation and training with maritime officials. Previous experience with Coast Guard Auxiliary is preferred.

Specialty Volunteer Positions:

  • Ship Liaison – Work directly with the ships throughout their stay. A good working knowledge of Savannah and how to get around is helpful. You must be available for all five days May 3-7. A typical day includes meeting with the captain or the first mate, advising him/her of the day’s activities; helping crew members with personal emergencies — such as finding a dentist, driving the cook to the supermarket for provisioning, etc. This opportunity works well if you can partner with another volunteer (such as spouse, friend, relative, etc.). All ship liaison candidates will be interviewed.
  • Docents – Assist with ship tours, often taking the place of a crew member at an information station — such as the helm or the capstan. Some museum experience is helpful or just a love of ships and maritime history. Hours are the same as a general volunteer. All docent candidates will be personally interviewed.

For more information click the “Volunteers” link at www.SavannahTallShipsChallenge.com, and download a volunteer form. You may scan the form and email it to: Volunteer@SavannahTallShipsChallenge.com, or fax it to Savannah Riverfront at 912.234.4904.

I hope to welcome you aboard our volunteer crew for this exciting, historical event!
