DOLPHIN TOURS TYBEE ISLAND – CAPT MIKE CELEBRATES 20 YEARS

Posted by mysavannah on March 19, 2012

Capt. Mikes Dolphin Tours Celebrates 20 Years on Tybee Island

Dolphin III at Cockspur Island Lighthouse
(Tybee Island, GA) – In a time when small businesses are finding it hard to stay open, one local business is gearing up to celebrate their 20th year.

Capt. Mike and Iris Scarbrough purchased their Tybee Island property in 1992, looking forward to leaving their hectic lives in Atlanta for peaceful Tybee, where they had spent every weekend and vacation for the previous five years. But starting their own business didn’t happen over night.

For the next four years, The Scarbroughs and their teenage daughter Lisa worked tirelessly to clean up the old property, rid it of long-forgotten boat parts, overgrown brush, and repair dilapidated buildings and docks. A local following started to form among the neighboring shrimpers and fishermen, and the marina played host to various US and international teams for the 1995 US trials and the 1996 Summer Olympics Yachting events.

At the time, the marina was simply known as “Mike’s Place,” a little hole in the wall bar that would have sandwiches and grill outs on the dock. But it was when Capt. Mike took a crew from Good Morning America out on his little S.S. Dolphin for a tour that the business exploded. The tours didn’t have a name, but moments after the broadcast calls were already coming in from people wanting to tour with “Capt. Mike.”

“Mike’s Place” was leased out to become Cafe Loco and later Coco’s Sunset Grille, a seafood market was opened, and watersports offerings came to reside. The sleepy little north end piece of Tybee had grown into the Village at Lazaretto Creek where thousands of tourists, school kids, and Girl Scouts take trips aboard Capt. Mike’s Dolphin Tours each year.

Now 20 years later, the Scarbroughs are thankful their business has survived the economic hits and look forward to more tours for years to come. To kick off the anniversary celebration, Capt. Mike’s Dolphin Tours will be offering discounts on tickets through Foursquare check-ins and specials on their Facebook page. Additionally, special tours have been set up for Easter sunrise and to watch the Tall Ships sail out of Savannah.

For more information, contact Lisa Scarbrough at lisa@momentslesstraveled.com or Iris Scarbrough at 912-786-5848.

GOODWILL RICHMOND HILL, GRAND OPENING, THURSDAY, MARCH 29, 10AM PUBLIC INVITED

Posted by mysavannah on March 13, 2012

The PUBLIC grand opening is Thursday, March 29, 10 a.m.

Goodwill to open in Richmond Hill

Employers, job seekers to have many free resources and services at Job Connections, and retail location will offer a wide variety of items

(RICHMOND HILL, Ga.) – Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire, Inc. is opening a free community career center, Job Connections, and a retail location in Richmond Hill. The grand opening will be Thursday, March 29 at 10 a.m.

The career center, Job Connections, will be on the second floor above the store. The store will be open to the public March 29 at 10 a.m. with a full selection of merchandise. The store will have door prizes and drawings throughout the grand opening. There will also be a donation center, with the donations helping to fund Goodwill’s Workforce Development programs.

Job Connections offers many free resources and services to both employers and job seekers. For example, Goodwill offers applicant screening. Employers can provide Goodwill with job descriptions and Goodwill can match qualified applicants out of their database for the employer to interview. Goodwill can also provide office space for interviewing and job fairs at no charge.

Resources, technology and support services have been designed to help job seekers secure and maintain employment. The center will be a resource for job searches, offering help with resumes and interviewing skills, as well as a phone bank, printer, and copier.  Educational seminars will also help with job skills as well as areas such as health and wellness and financial well-being.

“We talk to employers and match their needs to our services,” said Michael Whitfield, Richmond Hill Career Center Manager for Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire. “We find the areas that employers see a need and tailor our programs to that.” For example, at another Job Connections location Whitfield discovered that many job seekers lacked computer skills, so Job Connections started offering computer classes.

“We’re excited about being in Richmond Hill and Bryan County,” Whitfield said. “We are committed to tailoring our services to the needs of Richmond Hill. We’re anxious to hear what Richmond Hill and the surrounding areas want.”

In terms of services for job seekers, Goodwill will be offering a resume writing class and working with job seekers to develop interviewing skills so that they feel confident when they walk into an interview. There will also be networking opportunities and job fairs, and applicants will be able to view job postings that are available in the community.

“We hope to provide clients with the tools they need to stand out in the applicant pool and achieve their employment goals,” Whitfield said.

“We know education is the key to lifting people out of poverty,” Whitfield said. “The goal is to help them see their world in a different way and see what they can become. Goodwill can help them meet their needs and goals.”

In order to offer all these services for free, Goodwill relies on help from community volunteers.

“Volunteers are crucial,” Whitfield said. “We have opportunities in reception, basic data entry and for instructors who may want to offer workshops or facilitate classes.  It’s a great opportunity for citizens to give something back to their community.”

The Richmond Hill Goodwill is located at 9701 Ford Ave. Call 912-663-3223.

Tybee Island – March 15 Ocean Plaza Coastal Ecology Lecture Series to Explore the Wild Dolphin Population

Posted by mysavannah on March 9, 2012

Protecting Dolphins, Protecting Ourselves
March 15 Ocean Plaza Coastal Ecology Lecture Series to Explore the Wild Dolphin Population

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
(TYBEE ISLAND, GA) Peach Hubbard, president of The Dolphin Project, the longest operating dolphin research program in the country staffed entirely by trained volunteers, will be the featured speaker at this month’s Ocean Plaza Beach Resort Coastal Ecology Dinner Lecture Series, Thursday, March 15 at 7 p.m. at the hotel’s Dolphin Reef Oceanfront Restaurant. Hubbard’s lecture will focus on the area’s wild dolphin population. The lecture will be preceded by a wine and cheese reception at 6 p.m. in the Dolphin Reef Bar, and dinner will be served in the Dolphin Reef main dining room at 6:30 p.m. The standard Dolphin Reef dinner menu will be offered. To RSVP, please call 912-786-8400.
The Dolphin Project was founded in 1989 following a mass die-off of dolphins on the Eastern seaboard of the United States. A group of scientists and volunteers began the process of counting the dolphins and photographing their dorsal fins in an attempt to help monitor the health of the dolphins. Bolstered by the knowledge that the well-being of dolphins impacts the well-being of humans, the group has worked tirelessly for more than two decades to collect and share data on dolphins.
During her lecture, Hubbard will talk about dolphin anatomy, their habits and behaviors, the threats faced by the species and the research being conducted by The Dolphin Project. Hubbard will also discuss ways to protect the environment that dolphins and humans share.
About the Coastal Ecology Dinner Lecture Series
Created by Ocean Plaza Beach Resort Innkeeper Harry Spirides, the Coastal Ecology Dinner Lecture Series is held at the resort’s Dolphin Reef Oceanfront Restaurant on the third Thursday of every month and is open to the public. The multimedia lectures, which feature topics pertaining to coastal ecology, are presented by distinguished experts in the field but given in terminology everyone can understand. There is no entry fee or cover charge to attend the presentations. The lectures are preceded by a wine and cheese reception at 6 p.m. in the Dolphin Reef Bar, and the standard dinner menu is served in the Dolphin Reef main dining room at 6:30 p.m. for those attending who are hungry. The Coastal Ecology Lectures begin at 7 p.m. and last for approximately 45 minutes, followed by a 15-minute question-and-answer period.
Spirides created the lecture series after noticing that many of the hotel’s customers, who come from distant inland areas such as North Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio and beyond, have expressed an interest to not only explore Tybee Island and to see, touch, hear, and smell the natural habitat and see native wildlife, but also to be educated and learn all about the area’s living species and ecosystems. To meet that need, Spirides asked relevant organizations in the area such as the Skidaway Island Institute of Oceanography and Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary if they would be interested in presenting monthly lectures on topics related to coastal ecology. They gladly accepted his invitation.
Spirides is a former U.S. Coast Guard officer who patrolled Georgia’s coastline and waterways for several years while on duty. He says it was during those many excursions that he developed a deep appreciation and fondness for the Georgia coast’s vast expanses of undeveloped, pristine natural habitats and the species that live there.
“Our Coastal Ecology Dinner Lectures embrace Tybee Island’s surrounding natural geography and ecology and offer a unique educational experience to our community and its visitors while engaging and spotlighting various organizations that are out there every day doing a lot of hard work for the preservation of our ecosystems and yet receive very little attention and diminishing funding,” Spirides said.
The first lecture was held this past November and was presented by Dr. Marc Frischer of the Skidaway Island Institute of Oceanography. Dr. Frischer’s presentation outlined his extensive efforts to monitor the effect of climate change on the marine ecosystems of the oceans and the melting of the polar ice caps as documented extensively by him at Barrow, Alaska. The second lecture was given by Dr. George Sedberry of Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary. Dr. Sedberry’s topic was “Coral Habitats Off Georgia and Adjacent States: Exploration, Fisheries and Conservation.” The February Coastal Ecology Lecture featured Kris Williams, director of the Caretta Research Project, who discussed the sea turtle population and the reasons why it is dwindling.
There has been a resort hotel continuously operating on the Ocean Plaza Resort property for more than 120 years. The property is located on Tybee Island at 15th Street and oceanfront, about 20 minutes east of historic downtown Savannah. For more information on the Ocean Plaza Beach Resort, call 912-786-7777, email info@oceanplaza.com or visit www.oceanplaza.com.

YULETIDE JAM RAISES RECORD PROCEEDS OF $15,000 TO BENEFIT SECOND HARVEST OF COASTAL GEORGIA.

Posted by mysavannah on March 4, 2012

YULETIDE JAM RAISES RECORD PROCEEDS OF $15,000 TO BENEFIT
SECOND HARVEST OF COASTAL GEORGIA.

Homegrown fundraiser triples previous year’s net donation.

Savannah, GA – February 29, 2012. Today, the Yuletide Jam team will
present its largest contribution since the event’s inception in the amount of
$15,000.00 to Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia at Tubby’s Tankhouse in
Thunderbolt.

The fourth Annual Yuletide Jam event was held at Tubby’s Tankhouse in
Thunderbolt to help raise money for Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia. The
music fundraiser took place on December 9, 2011 in memory of Patrick Ansley
Williams, a talented musician and lifetime Savannah resident/business owner
who passed away from cancer earlier in 2011.

Yuletide Jam was originally started by Celia Dunn Sotheby’s Realtor and local
musician Stewart Marshall (Stewart & Winfield and Junkyard Angel) and his
cousin Thomas Barrow in 2008 to help raise money for Second Harvest of
Coastal Georgia. Stewart and Tom utilized their musical talents and industry
influence to help collect money for the hungry in Coastal Georgia. After a
successful first year, the charity event has grown significantly through grassroots
efforts and volunteer work, culminating in its record year for 2011. “I had never
anticipated four years ago that Yuletide Jam could grow into such a tremendous
success”, said Marshall and added “It has been an extremely invigorating and
gratifying effort for me at a personal level and I cannot wait to make it all happen
again this year”.

The Fourth Annual Yuletide Jam event was made possible this year partially
through generous contributions received from first time corporate sponsors such
as Savannah Reload, Tubby’s Tankhouse, Fox & Weeks, Lowcountry Films,
Savannah Distributing Company, C.S. Hurd, Speros Technology, Coastal
Insulation, and Sauers Construction Company.

Additionally, the abundant in-kind contributions and unlimited efforts by J.T.
Turner Construction, Live Oak Restaurants, Russo’s Seafood and Tytan
Marketing Group made it possible to maintain extremely low operating expenses
for the event while having a larger piece of the proceeds go directly to Second
Harvest.

The various contributions from individuals and families, the hard work of
volunteers and Savannah’s unwavering support made this the most successful
event in its history.

Tripp Turner, Chief Operating Officer of J.T. Turner and Board Member of
Second Harvest stated “This is the first year I have been this deeply involved with
Yuletide Jam. As a member of the Second Harvest family, I have followed the
increasing success of this charity event; however, this year was particularly
special to me since it was in memory of my very dear and lifelong friend Patrick
Williams.” He added “I feel privileged to be a part of Yuletide Jam and look
forward to seeing all it can achieve in 2012.”

Anna Jackson (2011 Yuletide Jam performer with Two Funky Birds), wife of
Patrick Ansley Williams and spokesperson for the Williams Family and Live Oak
Restaurants said “Being a philanthropist himself, Patrick would have been proud
of this achievement and would have enjoyed every minute of the musical
performances to its fullest” and added “The Williams Family has been touched by
the outreach of support and kindness of Savannah’s community and feels
privileged to once again host this year’s fifth annual Yuletide Jam Fundraiser at
its Tubby’s Tankhouse venue in Thunderbolt”.

Presented by Cedar Hammock Records, Yuletide Jam 2011 welcomed a myriad
of artists who graciously donated their time and talent to this event. The
performers that participated last year were Betsy Kingston & The Crowns, Keith
and Ross, Junkyard Angel, Rueda de Sabor, Stewart & Winfield, The Suex
Effect, The Turtle Project, Two Funky Birds, and Wormsloew.

Yuletide Jam raised its charitable donation to Second Harvest through tickets
and merchandise sales, cash donations, corporate and individual sponsorships,
as well as a silent auction.

The Fifth Yuletide Jam 2012 event is currently scheduled for Saturday,
December 8, 2012 starting at 2:00pm at Tubby’s Tankhouse in Thunderbolt.
Proceeds of this year’s event will again benefit Second Harvest of Coastal
Georgia and will continue to honor Patrick’s memory through music and
philanthropy.
