Why is it that 46 other states can support power purchase agreements and Georgia can’t?

Posted by mysavannah on February 27, 2012

Fellow Champions, State Sen. Buddy Carter is trying to push a bill – SB459 – through that will allow power purchase agreements so that property owners can have solar installed, owned and maintained by a third party with no upfront costs and with the electricity sold to the property owner at a multi-year rate that is lower than the utility.

It is in Regulated Industries and Utilities Committee now – with a hearing set for tomorrow (Tues. Feb. 28). If it gets out of committee it then goes to the Senate for a vote prior to crossover day March 7. YOUR SUPPORT IS VITAL.

GA Power is making a full court press with their lobbyists to stop this legislation. Do whatever you can to spread the word and try to get the message to the Senators to support this bill. Copy of the bill is posted on the blog: http://solarchampions.wordpress.com The following was sent to members of the committee considering SB459.

Feel free to copy it and send it to your state representatives, senators. and other interested parties. — This bill is not just a solar bill – It is a renewable energy bill that benefits not just individuals and companies, but also religious institutions, schools, libraries, museums and other non-profits, as well as local governments, that cannot avail themselves of tax credits.

(While solar and wind have problems of intermittent generation, new storage methods reduce the impact on the grid. The other energy generators in the bill, however, do not have this problem but maintain predictable production.) – It has massive job creation possibilities that will attract new industries to Georgia (See Green Energy, Green Jobs attached — or, if you prefer, go to http://www.solarcitiesusa.com/green-jobs.pdf )

– It is a private property rights bill — property owners have the right to harvest the energy that falls on their property — whether they finance it themselves or through third parties. – It provides a mechanism for property owners who would like to install solar modules but cannot take advantage of the tax credits, or are retirees or others on fixed incomes that want a predictable cost of electric power for the long-term. – It is a financing bill, not a deregulation bill. – It is a rural economic stimulus bill. – It is a forest industries economic stimulus bill. – Its effect on utilities will be marginal for many years. Growth will be steady, but it will take years to represent even 5% of total electrical energy generation — at a time that the utilities claim there will be increased demand. It actually provides a hedge for utilities in the coming years. Utilities in other states report that this level of generation can be handled by current methods of load balancing. – It does not require utilities to buy electricity at premium rates – they would only pay avoided costs, as they do now when buying power from other producers. – New companies setting up shop in Georgia, and a growing economy, also mean additional revenue for the utilities. Why is it that 46 other states can support power purchase agreements and Georgia can’t?

Smoke-free Ordinance passed by the Chatham County Commission

Posted by mysavannah on February 26, 2012

For Immediate Release

Contact: Amy Haywood Hughes (912) 661-‐1792

amy@HughesPublicAffairs.com

(Savannah, GA) Chatham County, Georgia will be a healthier place to work, live and play thanks to a Smoke-free Ordinance passed by the Chatham County Commission today.

Approved by an overwhelming 7‐1 vote, the Chatham Smoke-free Air Ordinance is the most comprehensive smoke-free law in the state of Georgia. The Ordinance closes all of the loopholes in the Georgia Clean Air Act of 2005 and makes all workplaces in unincorporated Chatham County smoke‐free.

Effective March 25, 2012, the Ordinance applies to any business that allows the public inside or has at least one non-family member employee. All bars, restaurants, outdoor serving areas and private clubs will now be smoke‐free. Electronic smoking devices known as “e‐cigs” are also prohibited in all businesses and public places.

The Chatham Ordinance is even stronger than the Smoke-free Air Ordinance that was implemented by the City of Savannah in 2011. The County Ordinance tightens up ambiguities in the City Ordinance by prohibiting Hookah bars and lounges.

A recent study coordinated by the Coastal Health District documented a 94% improvement in air quality in Savannah bars as a direct result of the Savannah Smoke Air Ordinance.

“This is a tremendous victory for the waiters, waitresses, bartenders, musicians, security guards and patrons of Chatham County bars,” said Amy Haywood Hughes, chairperson of Breatheasy Savannah-Chatham.

“No one should have to breathe harmful secondhand smoke as a condition of employment,” said Hughes who coordinated the volunteer advocacy efforts.

Passage of the Ordinance was a public health initiative championed by Healthy Savannah. The mission of Healthy Savannah is to support healthy lifestyles by advocating for and implementing programs and policies that make the healthy choice the easy choice.

Telfair announces top auctioneer at Sotheby’s will be auctioneer for Telfair Ball, auction

Posted by mysavannah on February 18, 2012

Telfair announces top auctioneer at Sotheby’s will be auctioneer for Telfair Ball, auction

(SAVANNAH, Ga.) – The Telfair Museums has selected well-known Sotheby’s auctioneer C. Hugh Hildesley as auctioneer for the 2012 Telfair Ball February 25. As Senior Auctioneer, Hildesley has conducted some of Sotheby’s most prestigious sales, including the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Sale, the sale of the Property of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and The Barry Halper Sale of Baseball Memorabilia.

Philip A. White, President and Chief Operating Officer of Sotheby’s International Realty Affiliates LLC, is also planning to attend the Telfair Ball.

Hildesley and Sotheby’s have donated his auctioneer time to the Telfair and are paying for his flight to Savannah.

“I am thrilled someone of Mr. Hildesley’s caliber is leading the auction at this year’s Telfair Ball,” said Helen Williams Johnson, chair of the Telfair Ball. “He has handled so many of the biggest auction events in the world.” She laughingly recounted that she had identified Hildesley as the auctioneer she was hoping to secure, and then very soon after her aunt, Celia Dunn of Celia Dunn Sotheby’s International Realty, dropped by the Sotheby’s office in New York and unofficially arranged to have him come.

Hildesley joined Sotheby’s in 1961 and played an integral role in Sotheby’s formative years in New York. Hildesley is Executive Vice President of Client Development, New York; Director, Sotheby’s Canada Inc.; and Chairman, Sotheby’s Canada Advisory Board. He has lectured widely on the art market and is author of The Complete Guide to Buying and Selling at Auction.

Hildesley was the auctioneer responsible for the sale of the Guennol Lioness, of 3000 B.C., which sold for $57 million—a record for any sculpture sold at auction at the time. He was also the auctioneer for the sale of Paul Kane’s Scene in the Northwest – Portrait, which sold for $5.2 million in 2002 and remains the record for any Canadian painting.

“An experienced auctioneer like Hildesley is critical to the success of a live auction,” said Lisa Grove, Director / CEO of Telfair Museums. “Great auctioneers have the ability to engage and excite the audience and encourage them to raise their paddles to benefit the museum.”

The Telfair Ball is the biggest fundraiser for the Telfair Museums and helps make its exhibits and educational programs possible, Johnson explained.

“I’m always amazed to see what they’re doing in educational programs,” Johnson said, adding that she’s hoping to be able to buy some computers for the educational areas since they currently only have four old computers. The Telfair Museums offers extensive educational programs, some free of charge, for adults and children.

“The Telfair’s exhibits are amazing,” Johnson said. “The Telfair brings major exhibits that Savannahians otherwise couldn’t see without traveling extensively.” In December, the Telfair Museums’ Jepson Center for the Arts will be one of only four museums in the U.S. that will host an exhibition of Italian masterworks by artists such as Botticelli and Titian from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. One of the world’s greatest art museums, the Uffizi Gallery dates to 1560 and began its storied history as the repository of the priceless collection of Florence’s famous Medici family.

“I don’t think Savannah would be the same without the Telfair,” Johnson said. “It’s such an important part of the community and its culture. It embodies the old with the new.”
The Telfair Silent Art Auction will take place Thursday, February 23. The 32nd Annual Telfair Ball will take place February 25. The Telfair Bash will take place later that night. Hildesley will be the auctioneer for The Telfair Ball auction.
The Telfair Silent Art Auction will take place Thursday, February 23 at 6 p.m. Tickets are $50 for members and $85 for non-members. Guests can wander the halls of the Jepson Center and bid on artwork from well-known local artists at the newly popular Silent Art Auction. Featuring over 100 pieces of phenomenal artwork, the Art Auction will be on display and available for view online beginning on February 11 for silent auction bidding. Guests can bid until the night of the event when winners will take home their auction prizes at the end of the night.
The Telfair Bash will take place February 25 at 9 p.m. at Telfair Academy. Bash tickets are $100 for Telfair members and $135 for non-members. Back by popular demand, the Bash will treat guests to fine food, cocktails, and a live band as well as an opportunity to participate in the silent auction. Ball participants will join the Bash after dinner to conclude the evening with dancing and celebration.
A highlight of Savannah’s social scene, The Telfair Ball benefits the museums’ exceptional exhibitions, educational programs, and acquisitions. The Ball is open only to Directors Circle members of the Telfair; for information about joining the Directors Circle, call 790-8864. The Ball has a separate auction. Levy Jewelers has donated a diamond and sapphire bangle bracelet. Ray Ellis has donated an original work of art for the Ball auction for the 29th consecutive year, and world-famous portrait photographer Dan Winters has donated to the Ball auction a portrait setting and portrait. Another item is a trip that includes two nights at the George V in Paris and two nights at the Goring Hotel in London. One of the many other items is a dinner for 36 at Local 1110 with wine pairings and more on the Perch (rooftop deck).
Guests will enjoy some of the best food and entertainment the Hostess City has to offer. The silent auction and cocktail reception takes place in the Telfair Academy’s Sculpture Gallery, and the fast-paced live auction will take place in the Rotunda. Dinner will be in the Jepson Center.

ServiceMaster by Liberty, a locally owned carpet cleaning and janitorial service franchise, has launched Clean Reward, an innovative program that gives 10 percent of each sale to the charity of the customer’s choice.

Posted by mysavannah on February 12, 2012

(SAVANNAH, GA) ServiceMaster by Liberty, a locally owned carpet cleaning and janitorial service franchise, has launched Clean Reward, an innovative program that gives 10 percent of each sale to the charity of the customer’s choice. Both business and residential customers may take advantage of Clean Reward. To learn more, please visit www.cleanreward.com.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

ServiceMaster by Liberty Launches Clean Reward Program to Benefit Local Charities
Carpet cleaning and janitorial service gives 10 percent of all sales generated from www.cleanreward.com to the charity of customer’s choice

(SAVANNAH, GA) ServiceMaster by Liberty, a locally owned carpet cleaning and janitorial service franchise, has launched Clean Reward, an innovative program that gives 10 percent of each sale to the charity of the customer’s choice.

ServiceMaster by Liberty owner Billy Schaffner launched Clean Reward to give back to the community which has nurtured his personal and business life for over half a century.

“The older I get, the more I appreciate all that has been done for me,” said Schaffner, who grew up in the Savannah housing projects and was the recipient of many of the programs and services offered to underprivileged children in the city. “When gratitude overflows, it shows up in some form of giving.”

Both business and residential customers may take advantage of Clean Reward. To participate, customers simply visit www.cleanreward.com. They may then either click on one of the charities already listed on the website or add the charity of their choice by clicking “Add Your Organization.” Donations are sent on the tenth of each month for all work completed in the previous month.

Among the charities to receive Clean Reward checks from ServiceMaster by Liberty are America’s Second Harvest Food Bank of Coastal Georgia, Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity, Coastal Pet Rescue, Living Vine Christian Maternity Home and numerous schools and churches. Organizations need not have 501(c) designation to qualify for a Clean Reward check.

The Skidaway Cat Program, an organization of volunteers that cares for the feral cat population on Skidaway Island, is one of the many organizations that has received funding from the Clean Reward program.

“The Skidaway Cat Program greatly appreciates the Clean Reward Program,” says Jane Von Rutenberg, the program’s treasurer. “The funds we’ve received from the Clean Reward Program have been used for spaying and neutering the cats and for veterinary care.”

Schaffner explained that the Clean Reward program has the potential to raise a significant amount of funds for organizations, especially those whose members decide collectively to take advantage of the unique program.

Fund Raising

“If a large organization, for example, enlisted 500 of its members to sign up for standard residential carpet cleaning, the donation would be around $10,000,” Schaffner said, pointing out that in this special program customers can request services up to a year in advance and simply put down a 10 percent scheduling deposit. “We’ll make the donation immediately and earn our money in the coming year as the work is completed.”

Triple Rewards
ServiceMaster by Liberty also encourages the community to refer business customers since larger facilities generate greater rewards. In addition, persons who refer business customers desiring monthly janitorial contracts will earn a Triple Reward, 10 percent of the monthly fee for three months, for their selected charity.

About ServiceMaster by Liberty
ServiceMaster by Liberty, locally owned and operated by Billy Schaffner, has an office and training center in Port Wentworth, Georgia, and is an independent franchise of ServiceMaster Clean. Schaffner, a Savannah native, is a 26-year veteran of the cleaning industry. ServiceMaster by Liberty uses the ServiceMaster system and products to provide business services in Chatham, Effingham, Bryan and Bulloch counties, and residential carpet and upholstery services in Effingham and Chatham. The company’s customers include large industrial and manufacturing firms, educational facilities, medical practices, office buildings and a growing list of satisfied residential customers.

Franchises that are Excelling in this Tough Economy

In-Home Senior Care, Education, Technology and Home Repairs

(Savannah, GA) While it may seem risky to open a business in the midst of a recession, one particular industry
– franchising – is proving that the self-owned business model is still alive and well. And, for those Savannah-
area entrepreneurs ready to experience the excitement of business ownership, opportunities exist in segments
where the recession is actually fueling franchise growth.

“No industry is completely recession proof, but we are finding that there are several franchise sectors that are
prospering due, in part, to the current state of the economy,” said Cathey Petkash, FranNet consultant for the
Savannah area. According to Petkash, franchises that focus on providing the necessities – as opposed to the
luxuries – are best suited to thrive when times get tough.

Petkash says that in over 3,000 franchise companies that exist, the following business categories are doing well
in the recession:

In-Home Senior Care Services: According to the Administration on Aging, 37.9 million Americans
are currently age 65 or older, and the population is expected to double over the next 30 years.
Therefore, Petkash says that the need for elderly caregivers and assisted living businesses will not only
remain high but will grow and prosper.
Education Services: According to Petkash, educationally-focused franchises are tough to deflate, as
people have shown that they will spend on their children – in good times or bad. In addition to tutoring
and supplemental educational opportunities, enrichment classes for art, music and sports are likely to
continue to be in high demand.
Technology Services: The influx of people using gadgets to navigate through personal and business
affairs will come to depend on tech-savvy individuals for necessary repairs. Accordingly, the Bureau of
Labor Statistics reports that an increase of more than 800,000 jobs in the Information Technology (IT)
sector is expected over the 2006-2016 projections decade.
Home Repair Services: Home sales are of a different nature these days with foreclosures & “short
sales.” Purchasers of these “bargains” are building a demand for repairs and are calling on “handyman
services” prior to “moving in.”

“There is no doubt that opening a business can present some challenges, especially in a recession. However,
by selecting business opportunities that have proven to be resilient, entrepreneurs can increase their chances for
economic survival,” said Petkash.

An educational event (hosted by Frannet, Hancock Askew, and Hunter Maclean) for local entrepreneurs
interested in researching franchise opportunities will be held at the Coastal Georgia Center on March 24,
from 9 til 1. Franchise Executives looking to locate in Southeast Georgia will present their Business Models,
including B2B & B2C Services, In-Home Senior Care, Professional Services and Education. Experts on
alternative funding for a business will be available, along with Counselors from the Savannah SBDC &
SCORE offices. Frannet will provide information on how to select a Franchise Business that is right for each
person’s individual goals, skills, interests and financial objectives. Free online registration is available at http://
meetthefranchisors032412.eventbrite.com

For more information about Franchise Opportunities that are prospering in the current economy, contact
