SAVANNAH – METRO RECRUITS HONOR WILLIE SMITH
Posted by mysavannah on October 28, 2011
NEWS RELEASE
Release At Will
METRO RECRUITS HONOR WILLIE SMITH
SAVANNAH, GA (October 26, 2011): Twenty-one Metro police officers in training, dozens of other officers and a host of volunteers will honor a fallen comrade Nov. 3 with the third quarterly Run to Remember as a tribute to Officer Willie Samuel Smith. The following day the recruits will be pinned as officers in the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department.
The run and pinning ceremony culminate 19 weeks of training for the recruits, including 11 weeks at the Georgia Public Training Center- Garden City. Then they will begin 10 weeks of supervised patrol with a veteran officer before patrolling the jurisdiction on their own.
The run begins Thursday at 10 a.m. at Daffin Park and terminates at Cedar Street and Delesseps Avenue where Smith was killed. There, a memorial service will be held and a wreath laid by the recruits in his honor. The pinning ceremony begins at Friday 3 p.m. in the Savannah Civic Center. Savannah businessman Mark Dana will provide the keynote address.
Smith, the Savannah Police Department Rookie of the Year in 1993, was a 23-year-old National Guard veteran when he was killed March 11, 1994. He was run over by a fleeing suspect near his police car on Delessups Avenue, making him the latest of 57 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in Chatham County.
Smith had blocked the street with his patrol car to stop the fleeing suspect’s car and had moved away in case the suspect rammed it. Instead, the suspect turned away from the car and struck Smith, carrying him 200 feet.
He left a wife, Marie, a 9-month-old daughter, Mari, and an identical twin brother. All three are expected to attend the ceremony.
“The Run To Remember is a newly added tradition for each graduating class to honor officers who have fallen in the line of duty and to reinforce to our new and existing officers how dangerous this profession can be,” said SCMPD Training Director Gary Taylor. “In our first two Runs To Remember we had dozens of our officers, officers from other departments and even members of the public join us. We expect as many on this run as well.”
Both the run and the pinning ceremony are open to the public. Runners will begin staging at 9 a.m. Thursday in the north end of Daffin Park at Victory Drive and Bee Road.
Those wishing to participate can contact Training Director Gary Taylor at 658-6335 or Ofc. Aaron Washington at 667-1830, or simply show up at the park.

Amazing panelists yesterday in Savannah, GA – Georgia Gov Deal……..
Posted by mysavannah on October 27, 2011
Gov. Deal, GPA’s Foltz, joined by Panama Canal administrator, business leaders
Savannah, Ga. – October 26, 2011 – Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal, Curtis Foltz, GPA’s Executive Director, Panama Canal Authority Administrator Alberto Alemán Zubieta and business leaders gathered Wednesday for a panel discussion in Savannah. The leaders spoke about the ports’ impact on jobs and commerce, their importance to the Southeast’s economic future and the need to deepen the Port of Savannah.
“The Port of Savannah plays an integral role in attracting new locations and the expansion of existing companies in Georgia,” said Gov. Deal. “This region serves as a focal point of Georgia’s highly efficient logistics system, providing companies with global access to their customers in markets around the world.”
An expansion of the Panama Canal, due for completion in 2014, will significantly lower the cost per container compared to current Panamax vessels. Delivering decreased cost per container will help lower the bottom line for the 21,000 U.S. businesses that import or export cargo through Georgia’s ports.
“Considering the importance of the Port of Savannah and its Savannah Harbor Expansion Project in the logistics chain and in the ‘All-Water Route,’ we look forward to seeing their infrastructure project completed and continuing our partnership,” said ACP Administrator/CEO Alberto Alemán Zubieta.
The GPA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are working to deepen the river from its current 42-foot depth to as much as 48 feet in order to more efficiently handle the larger vessels.
Georgia has already committed $134 million to the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project. Gov. Deal has proposed another $46.7 million in his FY2013 budget.
“Preparing for the future, even in uncertain times, is the best formula for success, and our partners here today also clearly understand this,” Foltz said. “Our plans to accommodate future growth will ensure that the state of Georgia and its deepwater ports are prepared to advance economic development and opportunity.”
Joining Gov. Deal, Foltz and Alemán Zubieta were Terry Bunch, director of Logistics and Customer Service at Rayonier; Chris Swartz, director of Global Transportation & Logistics at AJC International; Rick Gabrielson, director of International Logistics, Target; Mercedes Hernandez Garner, manager of purchasing at Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia; and Michelle Livingstone, vice president of transportation, The Home Depot.
“Deepening the Port of Savannah – one of the most important and productive civil works projects in the country – will maintain and create jobs and commerce throughout the nation, while significantly reducing transportation costs for U.S. shippers,” said GPA’s Chairman of the Board Alec L. Poitevint. “As the Southeast’s gateway to the world, our harbor must be able to accommodate these vessels without tidal restrictions in order to efficiently serve global commercial demands.”
Georgia’s deepwater ports and inland barge terminals support more than 295,000 jobs throughout the state annually and contribute $15.5 billion in income, $61.7 billion in revenue and $2.6 billion in state and local taxes to Georgia’s economy. The Port of Savannah was the second busiest U.S. container port for the export of American goods by tonnage in FY2011. It also handled 8.7 percent of the U.S. containerized cargo volume and 12.5 percent of all U.S. containerized exports in FY2011.

SCORE National Leadership Conference 2011 – Oct 18-20 in Las Vegas, NV
Posted by mysavannah on October 21, 2011
REPORT FOR BOARD OCTOBER 21, 2011
As the new incoming President of SCORE SAVANNAH – I was invited to attend the SCORE National Conference in Vegas. We spent 2 full days of best practices -Below is a recap of the conference to present at our next board meeting in November:
We heard Keynote speaker Gail Blanke, Founder of the Gail Blanke’s Lifesdesigns, LLC and new SCORE Board Director – she gave us amazing tips on how to find your full potential. She suggested getting rid of 50 things in your life – to make room for new energy. I like the example of getting rid of negative thoughts. I also liked her idea of using music to pump yourself up before a big interview.
We also hear Jon Taffer, Host and Co-Executive Producer of BAR RESCUE on Spike TV -and President Nightclub & Bar Media Group. The big take away: give the client an experience they will never forget – he was a powerful presenter – as was Gail. Thank you!
IDEAS I LEARNED FROM OTHER SCORE PRESIDENTS: TAKE AWAYS
We are an ARMY of business executives mentoring small business owners on the front line. SCORE is part of the economic solution – we create JOBS.
Put an American Flag in your local SCORE office.
If builders would only increase their LOCAL purchase by 5% they would create a million more jobs.
Send a letter or call all the major organizations and non profits in your community – letting them know SCORE has free mentoring.
As a mentor, schedule 4 hours to help a business owner fill out a business plan. They don’t do it on their own.
There are SCORE mentors and there are SCORE volunteers. Mentor spend an hour or two with the business each week. Volunteers are called on for their expertise.
Mentors should ALWAYS assign homework to the small business owner and before they leave, schedule the next meeting.
Create a yearly NETWORKING EVENT for all the clients: They may all bring their exhibits to an expo – Networking Night
Create a yearly Anniversary luncheon. Acknowledge mentors and volunteers. Give awards.
Collect emails and input to Constant Contact. Send out newsletters using content from National.
Assign AMBASSADORS for each organization in town.
The term Cottage Industry means the small business bills less than $100,000K a year.
Create 5 success stories a year: Video tape on YouTube, interview with Mentor and the Small Business Owner.
On website have a tab that says: Face to Face Free Mentoring
Start a conversation on FACEBOOK – post articles etc..
We can use Constant Contact to accept payment for workshops.
Send out SCORE flyers in Utility Bills
Start Simple Steps: First class free, series costs $125
Create a SPEAKERS BUREAU FOR SCORE:
Buy an hour of Radio time Saturday mornings – have mentors and business owners talk.
When you have a board meeting, invite the public, the Mayor, the media.
Since SCORE is a 5013C – we can issue Tax Credit Letters to volunteers that help Score
Co-mentoring is better. Start off by asking the small business to tell them about your business. LISTEN.
SCORE mentors are in this for the long term. Long term relationships are more likely to produce successful outcomes.
All mentors and volunteers must get a 2 hour certification – scoretraining.org. It incorporates successful coaching tactics that will help our clients succeed.
Mentors can go to the business.
Offer Saturday Hours for the clients.
Where to find mentoring clients: non profits, banks, accounting firms, city, county, act as service arm, job fairs – over 1/3 of them want to start their own business,
Invite clients to present at meetings
Over 50% of women are opening businesses – so more women are opening businesses than men.
There are over 40K trucking jobs available – if SCORE could figure out how to train these drivers -
Export names from database and input to Constant Contact.
Create a resource book or tv show
Produce an annual report.
Each new mentors must shadow 3 mentors and 6 sessions.
Ask the Chamber of Commerce to get SCORE volunteers through their membership: If your firm is willing to donate 1 hour of consulting time to new businesses, we will put you on our referral list.

The Savannah chapter of SCORE has elected Marjorie Young as its new President.
Posted by mysavannah on October 17, 2011
(SAVANNAH, GA) The Savannah chapter of SCORE has elected Marjorie Young as its new president. ((PHOTO BELOW))
SCORE, which stands for Service Corps of Retired Executives, is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the small business community through free mentoring and business counseling. SCORE members volunteer their time and business expertise to help coach the next generation of entrepreneurs.
Young’s goals for SCORE include increasing mentoring participation within the business community and expanding awareness about SCORE.
There are 13,000 mentors available on the national SCORE website. Business owners can contact mentors who are in their trade or field of business by email to address specific questions. Out of the 13,000 mentors, approximately 80 percent are retired and 20 percent of the mentors are active business owners.
Young states, “So many people are unemployed that they are now thinking about or starting their own business. SCORE mentors are reaching out to advise start-up businesses, mentor businesses and help get America back on track.”
“In 1990 I had my first meeting with a SCORE mentor to help my father’s printing business in Alexandria, Virginia. That advice was invaluable and helped turn our business around,” Young continues. “I have volunteered for SCORE as a mentor for years, and I’m thrilled to now be the president. I want business owners to know that they have free access to amazing areas of local expertise, including accounting, international trade, computer technology, social media, public relations, marketing, engineering management, going public, retail, health care, nonprofits, insurance, digital productions, Internet marketing, manufacturing, cash flow, business plans and logistics. We even have a retired IRS agent volunteering with us. If you can’t find a local match for your business you can access http://www.score.org which has 13,000 mentors.”
In addition to arranging speaking engagements with organizations, Young strives to develop a Speed Mentoring Day in conjunction with the Small Business Development Center, to be held on March 8, 2012.
“This will be a signature event for SCORE. Small businesses will have access to numerous mentors, among them retired and active business owners, in a roundtable-style mentoring event.”
Business hours for the Savannah location of SCORE are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please visit http://www.scoresav.org for more information.

Community Health Mission receives the Healthy Communities/Healthy America Awards
Posted by mysavannah on October 12, 2011
Community Health Mission awarded a Health Communities/Health America Awards.
CHM is one of 8 around the nation to received this recognition.
In response to the growing health needs of the uninsured, hundreds of communities nationwide have developed free clinics.
These non-profit clinics bring together health care professionals and other community volunteers to offer free or low cost health care to low-income, uninsured and under-insured people. Funding is generally raised on the local level and there is little if any government funding or support.
While the AMA advocates for greater access to care, the AMA Foundation supports these efforts by recognizing the extraordinary physicians and volunteers working at these free clinics to provide immediate and affordable health care. Through the Healthy Communities/Healthy America program, the AMA Foundation awards $10,000-$25,000 grants to physician-led free clinics.
To date, AMA Foundation has awarded over $750,000 to 41 free clinics across the country. The program is supported by a contribution from Lilly USA, LLC. Additional funding is provided by Don Q. Mitchell, MD and Mary Sue Mitchell, and other generous donors. To read more about the other 2011 receipients Click here Community Health Mission fights “silent killer” John Newton, La Voz Latina, Savannah, Ga There’s a good reason diabetes is known as a “silent killer”. Because its symptoms can remain hidden and undiagnosed for years, many diabetics are unaware they have the disease, especially if they are uninsured and don’t get regular medical checkups. Insulin is a hormone that converts sugar in the blood into energy.
Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce enough insulin or does not use insulin properly. According to health and fitness expert Dr. Mehmet Oz, blood sugar stays in the bloodstream of a diabetic and can cause severe problems throughout the body. “Our blood vessels are very delicate,” he says. “Excess sugar is like pieces of glass shard scraping at it. In severe cases, a diabetic’s blood vessels look like bent straws that cut off blood flow to the legs. Diabetes causes scarring from the inside and that’s something no doctor can repair.” It’s estimated that between 70 and 80 million people in the United States have diabetes or are on the verge of developing it and the medical costs associated with its treatment are astounding.
Because so many people are affected, the United States is forced to spend $174 billion a year treating diabetes-more than AIDS and all cancers combined. For several years, Savannah’s Community Health Mission (CHM), led by Dr. Miriam Rittmeyer, has partnered with drug companies like Pfizer and agencies like the Coastal Georgia YMCA to help uninsured diabetics living in Chatham County manage their conditions and improve their health. “The YMCA not only provides us with space to conduct our diabetes classes but also offers our patients the free use of all its exercise and fitness facilities while they are enrolled in our diabetes classes,” Dr. Rittmeyer said. Last month, CHM started its latest diabetes management class, a 10-week program of medical education and life-style advice led by Anna Viseras, CHM Health Promotion and Education Programs Coordinator. The class meets for 90 minutes each Wednesday morning at the Habersham Street YMCA. Ana Viseras reminded class members of the risk factors associated with diabetes: 1) Being overweight 2) having a family history of the disease 3) having high blood pressure 4) having low HDL (good) cholesterol and 5) belonging to a high-risk ethnic group like African-Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanics. According to a recent survey, Hispanics are almost twice as likely as non-Hispanic whites to be diagnosed with diabetes and nearly half of Hispanic children born in the year 2000 are likely to develop diabetes during their lives. “We cannot change our genetics but our focus during these 10 weeks will be on those things we can change,” Dr. Viseras said. ” I am a passionate believer in the phrase ‘knowledge is power’. If we give people the knowledge and power to take control of their health, communities will be healthier and better prepared to face the challenges of life.” Ana Viseras also expressed her appreciation for the Habersham YMCA staff, including Audrey Rodriguez, who is the link between CHM and the YMCA as well as Bucky Johnson (President) and Aron Karpas (Habersham Branch Director).
“They are providing a great help to the community by allowing our low income and uninsured patients to meet there, as well as allowing them to use the facilities without charge,” Viseras said. diabetes group class Who are we? The Community Health Mission (CHM) is a private, non-for profit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt med CHM has experienced enormous growth – in both patient volume and the complexity of services needed by our uninsured patients. However, while patient demand is increasing, access to funding is decreasing. In fact, at the present time, CHM gets no government assistance. Rather, we rely on the generosity of people like you to continue our work. For those of you who have previously donated to CHM we are very grateful, and ask that you renew you giving to us. For those of you who are newly acquainted with CHM, we ask that you accept this invitation to change people’s lives and consider how you can help us support the individuals in our community who need your assistance to become and remain healthy. For nearly 15 years, we have been providing free primary healthcare to adult individuals, ages 18 to 64 years old, who live or work in Chatham County and surrounding areas and who are uninsured (and do not quality for Medicare or Medicaid). In other words, we help those individuals who desperately need medical care but cannot afford to obtain it on their own. Sincerely, Miriam U Rittmeyer, PhD, MPH- CEO/ Executive Director

News from the Community Health Mission in Savannah, GA – A solution to the high cost of Prescription Drugs
Posted by mysavannah on October 12, 2011
| A Solution to the High Cost of Prescription Drugs
|
|
An estimated 48 million Americans have to pay top dollar for their medication because they have no prescription insurance or they are not part of a large organization that has negotiated discount pricing for them. The people that can afford it the least are charged the most.
The Solution: A free prescription drug card provided by The Community Assistance Program. Prescription drug discount cards allow prescription drug users to save money on all types of prescription medications. At the time of purchase, members simply present their card at a participating pharmacy to instantly receive substantial discounts on their prescription drugs. This program offers substantial discounts on all brand-name drugs and generic drugs saving users an average of 15% on brand drugs and 55% on generic drugs. The prescription drug savings card can be especially useful to seniors enrolled in Medicare since as many as 38% of Medicare recipients lack prescription drug coverage. These drug discount cards are similar to an ATM card and contain special computerized instructions that can be read by the participating pharmacy’s computer. When the card information is entered, the price on the prescription is discounted based on the pharmacy’s agreement with the program. This type of cutting-edge technology allows consumers to save money without encountering any hassles at the checkout line. The RX cards are accepted at over 80% of the pharmacies in the US and Puerto Rico. According to Dr. Miriam Rittmeyer, Director of Savannah’s Community Health Mission (CHM), these cards are free, they can be used in any state in the US and are accepted by many local and most national pharmacy chains. “All our patients are in a prescription assistant program run by our partner MEDBANK” Our patients are starting to use this card and some of them have received up to $25 off some prescription drugs that are not cover by MedBank,” Dr. Rittmeyer said. “Every time someone uses this card, CHM will get $0.75 cents donated to the clinic. We have cards that we can distribute and I would like to put them in convenience stores if they will allow us.” No personal ID is required and one card can be used by your entire family. This card benefits anyone who pays full price for medications and there are no income limitations. Senior citizens love it since it fills Medicare insurance gaps! This is a permanent card. There is no expiration date and it can be used over and over. For you convenience, go online to CHMsavannahrx.org and download the discount card shown on the right side of the home page. You will note that the card is available in either English or Spanish. For more information please visit the Community Health Mission website at CHMsavannahRx.org

101 Ways to Donate
(SAVANNAH, GA) It has never been easier to donate gently used items and help those in need. Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire has more than 101 donation boxes located throughout its 33-county region.
Donors can pull right up to a Goodwill donation box and place their contributions inside. It’s that simple!
“Goodwill strives to make it easy for people to donate their gently used clothing and other items. You no longer have to go far to find a Goodwill donation box,” says Mohsen Badran, CEO of Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire, Inc.
The sales of donated items provide revenue for Goodwill’s programs as well as help provide employment for individuals with disabilities and other barriers to employment in the community.
Items that are collected are sorted and prepared for sale by Goodwill employees, who gain valuable work experience in the process of collecting, sorting, distributing and selling gently used merchandise.
Goodwill provides employment to more then 550 employees throughout the Coastal Empire in its 12 retail stores, career centers, business services and donation centers.
Another way to donate is through our computer recycling program with our Dell-Reconnect Program. This corporate partnership provides an avenue for our donors to recycle their computers and computer related items in an environmental safe way. The program accepts any brand of used computer equipment at all Goodwill locations.
They have recycled over 242 tons of computers and computer related items and kept them out of landfills.

SIDEBAR
Lydia Ramsey’s Top Ten Table Manners Tips
1) Wait until everyone has been served and your host has started to eat before you begin.
2) Remove the napkin from the table after everyone has been seated, and make sure the large dinner napkin is folded and placed in your lap with the crease toward your waist. Elbows do not belong on the table.
3) Regardless of what is served, you always eat a little bit.
4) If you need to excuse yourself during a meal, do so between courses and place your napkin on the seat of your chair.
5) Forks belong on the left and knives and spoons belong on the right. Always use the utensil starting from the outside in, starting with the soup spoon on the right and the salad fork on the left.
6) The glasses are placed off the right, above the knife.
7) The bread and butter plate is on the left above the fork.
8) Soup is spooned away from you toward the back of the bowl.
9) When eating bread, break off only one or two bite size pieces at a time.
10) Used utensils are never placed back on the table.
Lydia Ramsey’s Top Ten Tips to Ace the Interview
1. Be on time. Arrive at least 10 minutes early.
2. Dress appropriately in conservative business attire that is neat, clean and pressed. The latest fashion is not for business.
3. The first words out of your mouth should be a “thank you” to the interviewer and calling the interviewer by name.
4. Be ready to give a good firm handshake that is accompanied by eye contact and a smile when meeting the interviewer. Shake hands when you leave as well.
5. Turn your cell phone off; better yet, don’t even carry it with you.
6. If you are concerned about your breath, use breath strips or mints. Don’t risk showing up with chewing gum.
7. Learn as much as you can about the business before the interview.
8. Prepare your own questions for the interview.
9. Take extra copies of your resume.
10. Follow up with a handwritten thank you note.
