First settled in 1736 by Noble Jones, John Fallowfield, and Henry Parker, the area was recognized as an important defensive outpost on the young colony’s inland waterway south from Savannah. Noble Jones’s Wormsloe Plantation was the site of a fort that defended Savannah from Spanish attack until 1742. The area was fortified during the Civil War, but saw little action. After the Civil War, Isle of Hope became a popular resort community. Where the river met the railroad was Barbee’s Pavilion, which became world renowned in the 1920s. The Isle of Hope Methodist Church was built in 1859 and was used as a Confederate hospital during the Union occupation of the area in 1864. Carvings were made in the pews by patients and the historic cemetery holds the graves of 33 Confederates mainly from Effingham County. Historic Wormsloe Plantation, Bethesda Orphanage, the oldest still-operating in America, and the Isle of Hope Marina are located on or near Isle of Hope.

Savannah’s Historic District now within reach for many more buyers

Savannah’s Historic District now within reach for many more buyers

Downtown properties offer bargains and opportunities unlikely to be seen again

(SAVANNAH) – People who thought the Historic District was out of their reach financially may be in for a pleasant surprise. Condos and homes downtown are now much more affordable, and people who had been priced out of that market are now suddenly finding they can afford to live downtown after all.

“It is a terrific time to buy a house downtown because I don’t think we’ll ever see prices like this again,” said Pam Sutton, a sales associate with Celia Dunn Sotheby’s International Realty.

The internationally-known Historic District attracts people who want to relocate and those buying a second or third home. They’re drawn to the European-style walkable city with beautiful architecture and a thriving nightlife with high-quality restaurants. Savannah has a unique appeal, with great demand for its historic properties. Today’s prices will likely seem like a window of opportunity in a couple of years.

The area that was too expensive for many buyers even a year or two ago is now suddenly within reach, and more buyers can now afford a whole range of homes downtown.

Qualified buyers can now get into terrific condominiums or townhouses in the Landmark and Victorian historic districts for $250,000-$750,000 and up, said Franklin Williams, an associate broker with Celia Dunn Sotheby’s International Realty. These prices are just guidelines and there are exceptions. The east and west side of the Historic District typically have lower prices than the central heart of the district.

“With motivated sellers we can now offer qualified buyers excellent values,” Williams said. “Non-motivated sellers will find it difficult to attract qualified buyers in the current market.” Qualified buyers know they have an edge and even the most discerning buyers are determined to take advantage of this market.

“For people who love historic properties, today’s market provides an excellent opportunity to own a home in one of Savannah’s wonderful historic districts,” Williams said. “There are amazing architectural gems available at greatly reduced prices.”

Savannah’s Historic District is frequently featured in national and international travel and design magazines and has been extensively featured in the New York Times and other publications. It’s become popular for interesting shopping, culture, great cuisine and sightseeing. The extensive restoration of historic homes, as well as its unique city plan and architecture, has made Savannah’s downtown a place many people would love to purchase a home.

“I think we’re going to see an even greater interest in Savannah,” Williams said. “We’re getting even more and more international interest.”
“Savannah’s historic districts offer a wonderful place to live, and we’re lucky to have such beautiful historic properties,” Williams said. “We are truly unique among American cities.”

There are eight nationally recognized residential historic districts in the city limits of Savannah. The Landmark District, which is commonly referred to as THE Historic District, has seen a remarkable transformation since the late 1950s. Recognized for its walkable city plan of streets and squares and world renowned architecture, the Landmark District has something to offer for everyone.

Many buyers seek out the unique qualities and ambiance of a historic property. Local historic district designation gives potential home buyers two rare and economically valuable assurances: that the qualities that attracted them to their neighborhood will endure over time and that they can safely reinvest in sensitive improvements to their home without fear that their neighbors will undermine this investment with inappropriate new development or bad design.

Known for its tradition of integrity, Celia Dunn Sotheby’s International Realty specializes in residential and commercial properties in Savannah and the Low Country of Georgia and South Carolina. Founded in 1981, Celia Dunn Sotheby’s International Realty is noted for outstanding service to its clients, thorough knowledge of Savannah and the South Carolina Low Country, and excellent staff, in addition to having one of the region’s top property management departments. The owners are natives of Savannah who have more than 60 years’ combined experience in real estate. The offices are located at 9, 13, and 17 West Charlton Street on Madison Square in Savannah and 336 Buck Island road in Bluffton, S.C.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: PHOTO BELOW

The Limited to Unveil Jewelry Designed by SCAD Students on September 22

Student Designs will be sold at The Limited in Savannah and Online

(SAVANNAH, GA 9/16/2011) The Limited will debut a jewelry collection featuring original designs by seven Savannah College of Art and Design students during a private unveiling on Thursday, September 22 at the chain’s Oglethorpe Mall location.

The media is invited for a sneak peak from 5:30-6:00 p.m, September 22.

A private reception will follow from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and will include remarks by Linda Heasley, CEO of The Limited, and Victor Ermoli, Dean of the School of Design at SCAD.

The partnership between the iconic women’s retailer and the nation’s premier art and design university was devised to provide students with real business experience and offer The Limited’s customers fresh designs.  “The Limited’s mission is to help our customers achieve their personal success – fulfilling their potential and looking great every step of the way,” said Linda Heasley, CEO of The Limited. “Which is why we were excited to partner with SCAD – to give students priceless, real life experience in the fashion industry and ultimately expose our customers to new and different collections.” This collaboration is truly a unique partnership of commerce and design.”

The Limited reached out to SCAD for this partnership for both their reputation as a leading design institution, but also their emphasis on developing marketable skills.

“As part of SCAD students’ career preparation, we work with leading companies on collaborative projects. Through custom-designed assignments and commissioned work, our students gain real-world, professional experience-and our partners benefit from new perspective and fresh ideas,” said Victor Ermoli, Dean of the School of Design at SCAD.

To kick off this collaboration, executives from The Limited met with SCAD students in the Jewelry and Objects department in January 2011. Taking into account the company’s creative and business requirements, the students created designs inspired by The Limited’s Holiday 2011 concepts. During a formal presentation in March, the students’ final designs were evaluated on their commercial and creative aspects. Twenty jewelry styles were selected for production for this capsule collection that will debut at The Limited’s Oglethorpe Mall store beginning on September 22. The collection will also be available at thelimited.com on October 3. Based on sales performance, The Limited expects to expand the collection to additional stores in the future.

“Ultimately this partnership is about the opportunities created by great design. We’re excited to help these students see how their design work can open doors to real life business opportunities,” said Heasley. “We’re proud to share their work with The Limited customer.”

Goodwill Fashionistas Contest

Posted by mysavannah on September 11, 2011

(Savannah/Statesboro)  My relationship with Goodwill began back in college. Most of the extra furniture in my dorm rooms were handpicked from the Goodwill store by myself and my roommate. I never just bought a couch or a table, I would buy the couch and recover it. I would buy the table and paint it with my favorite quotes. It made the perfect room.

The greatest times spent at Goodwill were picking out clothing for a sorority or fraternity function. I always loved to get dressed up for a good party, especially with a theme. That way I could get creative with the clothing. Whenever the theme for the party was announced, I was on my way to Goodwill. I always saw the store as a treasure trove of outfits for any look I was going for, my favorite being 80’s themed functions. I was so into dressing up for any and every function, I even went to my senior formal with my date in a 70’s look, even though there was no theme. We had a great time!

While it wasn’t foremost in my mind at the time, it did dawn on me that my purchases at Goodwill were benefitting the community. It made me feel good to spend the little money I had at a place that could use it most.

A few years later in graduate school, I ventured back into Goodwill and looked around. I wasn’t there to find an 80’s dress for a party, but as I looked through the racks, I found a beautiful kelly green skirt. The skirt was a-line, lined, and silk, not to mention my favorite color.  I could not believe my luck. I looked at the tag and could not recognize the brand. It had to have been 20 years old. This beautiful skirt belonged hanging in an exclusive vintage clothing store, but luckily it ended up in Goodwill. Lucky me, it was only $5 and was now mine.

You see, Goodwill stores are so much fun if you just go in, look around, and get creative.  That is why Moments Magazine is joining forces with Goodwill of the Coastal Empire to bring you the “Goodwill Fashionista Contest.”

We are looking for the most creative Goodwill outfit around. The contest kicks off on Monday, August 22. You have until September 11 to submit a photo of you looking fabulous in your outfit. The first place winner will receive a Merle Norman makeover, $100 gift certificate to Goodwill, and be featured on the cover of the October issue of Moments Magazine. The second place winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to Goodwill. Go to statesboromoments.com and click on the contest link at the top of the page for more info and to upload your photos.

Have fun with this! Get as creative as you can. You can shop at any Goodwill store around. You will look good and feel even better helping our community. As you know, styles and trends cycle around. Lucky for me, the 80’s have come back.

SAVANNAH, RICHMOND HILL ROOFING

Four Ways to Reduce Your Energy Bill Through Your Roof

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

(SAVANNAH, GA / RICHMOND HILL, GA) The record-breaking temperatures in Southeast Georgia this summer have done more than just sap energy. They have also contributed to skyrocketing power bills.

RPI Energy, a division of RPI, a Richmond Hill-based roofing company that specializes in commercial, industrial and residential roofs, offers the following tips to reduce energy bills through your roof.

Use Lighter Colored Roofing Materials

Roofs traditionally are black, however, more and more consumers are discovering the benefits of using white or cool color roofing systems. Cool roofs work by reflecting and emitting the heat of the sun back into the atmosphere. This process of solar reflectance and thermal remittance helps keep occupants more comfortable, especially during the summer. As a bonus, air conditioning costs can be reduced, thereby reducing power bills. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, by installing a white or cool color roof, consumers can reduce their annual air conditioning energy use by up to 15 percent for a single-story building.

Other benefits of cool roofs include a reduction of peak demand for electricity, which ultimately may help to lower costs and prevent power outages. Cool roofs also can mitigate global warming and reduce the urban heat island effect and smog.

Insulate Your Roof

Adding insulation to a roof system is another way to decrease energy consumption. Polyiso, a thermosetting type of plastic with closed-cell foam, has low-conductivity gas in its cells. Though used mostly on commercial roofs, many homebuilders and homeowners are beginning to use the material because of its high thermal performance. Polyiso is available in liquid, rigid foam board and sprayed foam forms. Installing polyiso insulation below the membranes of the roof can reduce energy usage and help decrease your energy bill.

Use Solar Photovoltaic Panels on Your Roof

Generating electricity by installing solar photovoltaic (PV) panels is not only environmentally friendly, it also can save the consumer money in the long run. PV cells work by converting sunlight directly into electricity. Using that solar electricity on your rooftop can power various parts of your home, from hot water systems to solar attic fans. In the long run, solar roofs help reduce peak energy costs incurred, especially during the hot summer months.

Install a Green Roof

Green roofs, also known as living roofs, are rooftops that are covered either entirely or partially with some form of vegetation. The roofs feature a waterproof membrane underneath the vegetation. Some green roofs also include drainage and irrigation systems.

Installing a green roof can help reduce heat by adding another layer between the building and the environment. Green roofs with drainage and irrigation systems have added benefits including rainwater harvesting, in which the homeowner uses his or her roof to channel and store water. Such water can be used to water the grass, thus reducing monthly water bills. Harvesting rainwater is especially helpful for people who live in areas where daily water use is restricted.

“The roofing industry offers a number of environmentally friendly solutions that benefit the customer and the world around us,” says John Reynolds, president of RPI. “Even minor changes to a roof can make a big difference to consumers looking to lower their electric bills and protect the environment.

•    God speaks to each of us as he makes us.
Then walks with us silently out of the night.
These are the words we dimly hear:
You, sent out beyond your recall,
Go to the limits of your longing.
Embody me.
Flare up like flame
And make big shadows I can move in.
Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror.
Just keep going. No feeling is final.
Don’t let yourself lose me.
Nearby is the country they call life.
You will know it by its seriousness.
Give me your hand.

Shannon Scott When you were born, Atlas Giggled, and the earth has been better off for it ever since. Happy Born-day Marjorie Young!
Spencer Luke cheers to you on your special day. Every day is a gift, every moment an opportunity. Best wishes!

A few random quotes for your birthday: “Good people don’t need rules.” “Anger is the straightest line to a mistake.” “”Coping and dealing are good skills, but they are add-ons, not real change.” “Just because you’re tormented doesn’t mean you can’t have a good life.”

Paschaltide” – Alla Renee Bozarth
Pack nothing. Bring only your determination to serve and your willingness to be free. Don’t wait for the bread to ride. Take nourishment for the journey, but eat standing, be ready to move at a moment’s notice.Do not hesitate to leave your old ways behind – fear, silence, submission. Only surrender to the need of te time – to love justice and walk humbly with your God.Begin quickly, before you have time to sink back into old slavery. Set out in the dark. I will send fire to warm and encourage you. I will be with you in the fire and I will be with you in the cloud.
I will give you dreams in the desert to guide you safely home to that place you have not yet seen…I am sending you into the wilderness to make a new way and to learn my ways more deeply. So you will be only the first of many waves of deliverance on these desert seas.
It is the first of many beginnings – your Paschaltide.
Remain true to this mystery.
Pass on the whole story…do not go back. I am with you now and I am waiting for you.
- Alla Renee Bozarth
Michael Ames
OK, it took me a while, but here are two for you – “And in the end it is not the years in your life that count, it’s the life in your years.” — Abraham Lincoln, and “To possess great wisdom obliges one to share it” – Robert Crais. Hope you had a great day!
Some of you will be so changed by weathers and wanderings that even your closest friends will have to learn your features as though for the first time. Some of you will not change at all.
Some will be abandoned by your dearest loves and misunderstood by those who have known you since birth and feel abandoned by you. Some will find new friendship in unlikely faces, and old friends as faithful, and true as the pillar of God’s flame. Sing songs as you go, and hold close together. You may at times grow confused and lose your way…touch each other and keep telling stories…make maps as you go, remembering the way back from before you were born…
Alyssa Brook Woods
Happy Bday Late… ” Happy Wife, Happy Life!”- Randy Woods!( adopted from countless other smart men) xoxo
