Posted by mysavannah on February 18, 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(SAVANNAH, GA) – Leopold’s Ice Cream is proud to announce a new ice cream flavor—“SBF 30”—inspired by the Savannah Book Festival.  A portion of the proceeds from “SBF 30” will benefit this FREE, three-day literary event Feb. 18-20 on Telfair Square in downtown Savannah.  A play on words alluding to the sun protection factor (SPF) in sunscreen and to Savannah’s famous sunny days, “SBF 30” is a new twist on caramel crunch, a creamy caramel with a home-made praline crunch.
Also, every single flavor of ice cream has been renamed using the Festival authors’ book titles as inspiration.  Some of the fun, festive new names include:
Saturday Evening Speaker Sandra Brown, Tough Customer: “One Tough Chippy” Peanut Butter Chip
Sunday Brunch Speaker Vince Dooley, Vince Dooley’s Garden: “Dooley’s Rose Garden” (Rose Petal)
Lauretta Hannon, The Cracker Queen: “Strawberry Dress” (Strawberry)
Thomas Chatterton Williams, Losing my Cool: “Losing My Coconut” (Coconut)
Chad Faries, Drive Me Out of My Mind: “Drive Me Out of My Mint Chip”
Martha Nesbitt, Savannah Celebrations: “Savannah Celebrates Tutti Frutti”

Leopold’s hopes this partnership will help more people take notice of the Savannah Book Festival, adding that cultural events like this are what make Savannah special.  Owner Stratton Leopold loves books and is an avid reader: “We feel that Leopold’s Ice Cream and the Savannah Book Festival make the perfect weekend combo!”

Stephanie Duttenhaver, board president of the Savannah Book Festival, is thrilled and honored by Leopold’s focus on books: “Thanks to the folks at Leopold’s, next week even more people can learn about our great Festival and also help support it by buying a scoop of ‘SBF 30.’  What a fun, delicious way to help us keep this Festival free and open to the public—and you might even spot your favorite author while you’re at Leopold’s!”

(SAVANNAH, GA) For the third consecutive year, The Landings on Skidaway Island will host the $50,000 Savannah Challenger. This year’s tournament, which will feature 32 world-ranked tennis professionals, takes place April 30-May 8 at The Landings on Skidaway Island.

“The Challenger continues to grow and become a part of the fabric of Savannah,” says Tournament Chairperson Robin Gold. “As we go in to our third year, people are recognizing that the Challenger is the go-to place for world-class tennis in an intimate setting. We have a great opportunity to witness some of the best tennis players on their way up in world rankings.”

Each year, the USTA hosts 16 Challenger Tournaments around the country. Participants are usually full-time ATP tour players with a world ranking of 40-200 who play in the tournaments to improve their rankings and advance to Grand Slam events.

The 2010 tournament, which was held May 1-9, attracted more than 3,000 fans from around the country, who descended upon Savannah to see some of the world’s best rising tennis stars in action. Kei Nishikori of Japan won the 2010 singles tournament, defeating Ryan Sweeting of the United States 6-4, 6-0, while the doubles team of Jamie Baker and James Ward of Great Britain bested the team of Bobby Reynolds (United States) and Fritz Wolmarans (South Africa) 6-3, 6-4.

Among the professionals competing in the 2010 $50,000 Savannah Challenger, 56 percent went on to compete in the Australian Open, while 50 percent competed in the U.S. Open, 50 percent competed in Wimbledon and 31 percent competed in the French Open.

This year’s tournament will be preceded by a Challenger Qualifying Tournament February 25-27 at The Landings. The winner will receive a Wild Card into the qualifying rounds of the 2011 $50,000 Savannah Challenger.

he Savannah Book Festival is going to school—literally—with twelve Festival authors donating their time at ten schools in Chatham County

Posted by mysavannah on February 16, 2011

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Savannah Book Festival is going to school—literally—with twelve Festival authors donating their time at ten schools in Chatham County as part of its Authors in the Schools community outreach program scheduled for Friday, February 18, 2011. The SBF @ School Program, provided FREE to Savannah area students, brings award-winning writers into public and private high schools, colleges and universities to talk to students about their books and their lives in letters.

In order to ensure an enriching, relevant experience for the students, the Savannah Book Festival works closely with the schools’ media specialists, English teachers and college professors to select authors who best fit the students’ current course of study. This year, author Thomas C. Williams, whose memoir Losing My Cool looks at the influence of hip hop culture on young people, will talk to students at Johnson High School. Ahead of his visit, Johnson’s principal, Dr. Freddie Gilyard purchased copies of his book so her students could prepare for a dialogue with the author. Mr. Williams will also visit Savannah State University for what promises to be a lively debate on the role of hip hop in contemporary culture. The panelists include: Savannah State University professor Ed Fletcher; Armstrong Atlantic State University professor Elizabeth Desnoyas-Colas; and Lloyd Harold representing All Walks of Life (AWOL, Inc.). The event will take place at Torian Auditorium in Jordan Hall.

A Savannah Book Festival “Literary Day” is on tap for Savannah Christian Preparatory School, with authors Lenore Hart, Michael Malone and Barry Sheehy visiting classes there. Students reading Edgar Allan Poe will hear from Lenore Hart, author of The Raven’s Bride, a novel about Poe’s first wife; while students of history will walk the grounds behind Savannah Christian with Civil War Savannah author Barry Sheehy to learn about the Civil War entrenchments that remain in that area.

Since its founding in 2008, the Savannah Book Festival has introduced thousands of young people to dozens of authors, adding depth and breadth to their curricula. Both students and authors are enriched by their experiences in this program: the authors love talking with young people about their writing, while the students benefit greatly from the opportunity to hear about the craft of writing. The entire program is provided FREE to area schools, adding yet another important service component to the Savannah Book Festival. Here’s a list of all the 2011 SBF authors in the schools:

Leopold’s Ice Cream Renames flavors for Authors coming to Savannah Book Festival this week

Posted by mysavannah on February 14, 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(SAVANNAH, GA) – Leopold’s Ice Cream is proud to announce a new ice cream flavor—“SBF 30”—inspired by the Savannah Book Festival, sales of which will benefit this FREE, three-day literary event Feb. 18-20 on Telfair Square in downtown Savannah. A play on words alluding to the SPF factor in sunscreen and Savannah’s famous sunny days, “SBF 30” is a new twist on caramel crunch, with the flakes of caramel representing freckles on skin.

In addition, in honor of some of the writers who’ll be appearing at the Savannah Book Festival, every single flavor of ice cream in the store on Broughton Street will be renamed after the authors’ books beginning Tuesday, February 15 and running through the last day of the Festival, Sunday, February 20. Some of the fun, festive new ice cream flavors include:

Keynote Address speaker Lisa Genova’s novel Left Neglected: “Not Left Neglected” Lemon Sorbet

Sandra Brown’s Tough Customer: “One Tough Chippy” Peanut Butter Chip

Roy Blount Jr.’s Hail Hail Euphoria! “Hail Hail Cherry Cordial!”

Sunday Brunch speaker Vince Dooley’s Vince Dooley’s Garden: “Dooley’s Rose Garden” (Rose Petal)

Lauretta Hannon’s The Cracker Queen: “Strawberry Dress” (Strawberry)

Tobias Wolff’s Our Story Begins: “Our Story Begins with Vanilla” (Vanilla)

Karl Marlantes’s Matterhorn: “Matterhorn Coffee” (Coffee)

Thomas Chaterton Williams’s Losing my Cool: “Losing My Coconut” (Coconut)

Chad Faries’s Drive Me Out of My Mind: “Drive Me Out of My Mint Chip”

Even Leopold’s most famous flavor will boast a new moniker– Martha Nesbitt’s Savannah
Celebrations: “Savannah Celebrates Tutti Frutti”

This new partnership with the non-profit Savannah Book Festival was inspired by owner and founder Stratton Leopold’s life-long love of books and reading. Recently, Leopold’s teamed up with the Live Oak Public Library to create a special flavor which helped the Libraries raise $1,500 for children’s programming. Mr. Leopold hopes for a similar outcome with this new “SBF 30” flavor, with all proceeds going to help bring renowned writers to Savannah during the Festival as well as in the SBF’s regular quarterly literary events.

Stephanie Duttenhaver, board president of the Savannah Book Festival, is thrilled and honored by Leopold’s focus on books: “We work hard to get the word out about this fantastic, FREE literary festival, which brings some of America’s most celebrated writers into our community. We hope everyone in Savannah comes down to Leopold’s next week to buy at least a scoop of “SBF 30” to help support the Savannah Book Festival. What a fun, delicious way to help us raise the needed dollars to keep this Festival free and open to the public—and
you might even spot your favorite author while you’re there!”

Leopold’s VeriBest™ ice cream is absolutely one-of-a-kind. All flavors are made on the premises, one batch at a time, using top-secret family recipes handed down from the original Leopold brothers. Try some of our more historic flavors – like Johnny Mercer’s favorite, Tutti Frutti – made exactly as they were in 1919. Wondering why our Pistachio isn’t green? No artificial dyes, of course! We use only the best all-natural ingredients, hand-
picked for quality.

Karl Marlantes in Savannah, GA –

Posted by mysavannah on February 14, 2011

(SAVANNAH, GA) – The Savannah Book Festival is proud to announce that Karl Marlantes,
author of the novel Matterhorn—a New York Times bestseller and winner of the prestigious
Center for Fiction’s 2010 Flaherty-Dunham First Novel Prize, the 2011 William E. Colby Award
and the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association prize for best novel of 2010—will appear in a
FREE presentation at the Savannah Book Festival on February 19, 2011.

The story follows Bravo Company, a U.S. Marine unit, as it takes and re-takes a hilltop firebase
near the DMZ and Laotian border in 1969 Vietnam. Marlantes, 65, a highly decorated Marine
Corps officer, Vietnam veteran and Rhodes Scholar, wrote and revised Matterhorn based on his
experiences during the war over a 33-year period. During the years of rejection by publishers, he
was told to rewrite the novel for the first Gulf War, then Afghanistan. But the Washington State
resident remained unwavering in his devotion to tell the story of political incompetence, wartime
drudgery and uncommon valor.

Matterhorn was selected by Barnes and Noble as one of its Discover Great New Writers picks.
The New York Times called Matterhorn “a final exorcism for one of the most painful passages in
American history.”

The Savannah Book Festival’s mission is to promote reading, writing and civil conversation. It

Bouhan, Williams & Levy Celebrate 125th Anniversary

Posted by mysavannah on February 6, 2011

(SAVANNAH, GA) Bouhan, Williams & Levy, LLP is pleased to announce
that the firm will celebrate its 125th anniversary in 2011.

As one of Georgia’s oldest and most respected law firms, “This
is a landmark celebration for us,” says Carlton Joyce, a partner
with Bouhan, Williams & Levy.

Founded in 1886, the firm began with William Wilson Osborne, who later
partnered with United States Senator Pope Barrow to form Barrow &
Osborne. The next century saw leadership change hands several times over,
ushering through a number of associates who went on to become esteemed
judges, authors and political figures. Yet, throughout its many
transformations, the core principles of this law firm remained intact.

“Our predecessors were committed to creating an institution
based on integrity, honesty and the highest caliber legal
representation,” notes Joyce. “We proudly continue that
legacy today.”

Bouhan, Williams & Levy specializes in the areas of corporate,
business, and transactional matters, as well as civil litigation on
the local, national and international levels. As such, the firm has
enjoyed the opportunity to represent numerous clients in sophisticated
business transactions, which has afforded its transactional lawyers
the opportunity to develop expertise usually limited to firms in major
metropolitan areas. Clients include major corporations, small
businesses, professional entities, insurance companies, financial and
lending institutions, non-profit corporations, individuals and public
sector boards and authorities.

The firm and its attorneys have consistently been named to prestigious
groups such as the 2010 U.S. News & World Report’s Best Law
Firms Rankings, Best Lawyers in America, Georgia Lawyers, Rising
Stars, Georgia Trend’s Legal Elite, and the American Trial Lawyers
Association’s Top 100 Attorneys in Georgia, among others.

“I think we have a very good reputation for our ultimate work
product,” says Edwin Robb, who practices maritime law and has
been a member of Bouhan, Williams & Levy since 1970. As well,
“By and large, I think our partners enjoy respect from
judges.”

Robb is one of a handful who have been with the firm for several
decades. Members Walter Hartridge and Pomeroy Williams joined in 1961;
Lea Holliday the same year as Robb.

The year 1970 marked a new era for the firm as it relocated to The
Armstrong House, a historical centerpiece of Savannah once home to
Armstrong Junior College.

“In civil litigation and jury trials, we have one of the
strongest traditions in Georgia,” says Joyce. “Members
of the firm are among Georgia’s most outstanding trial lawyers and
have experience in all phases of litigation.”

Headquartered in the Armstrong House at 447 Bull Street, Bouhan,
Williams & Levy, LLP is among Savannah’s oldest law firm. They

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Savannah Ocean Exchange proudly announces Gulfstream as the worldwide sponsor of the Gulfstream Navigator Award 2011, which recognizes the best technology, idea or solution to improve the world’s coasts and prepare them for the future.

The award is given to the top solution submitted as part of an annual Call for Solutions sent out through the Savannah Ocean Exchange Board of Governors. The governors, currently numbered at 27, have selected “Shaping the Future of Our Coasts” as the theme for this year’s submissions, which are due by April 15. An exclusive panel of experts from various disciplines will select the 10 best entries, which will be presented on Sept. 7 and Sept. 8 to the Board of Governors and invited guests in Savannah. That event will culminate with the announcement of the Gulfstream Navigator Award 2011 winner, who will be presented $100,000 on behalf of Gulfstream by Joe Lombardo, the company’s president.

“Our company was named after the Gulf Stream, a driver of commercial sea traffic for centuries and a critical part of the Atlantic ecosystem,” notes Mr. Lombardo. “Living and working in a coastal community, we are sensitive to the importance of sustainable growth and the protection of environmental assets. We believe the Navigator Award will further research and actionable projects focused on oceans and coastal areas. It will also cast a beacon on Savannah, which is a great home for new high-tech and environmental businesses and an important maritime hub.”

Savannah Ocean Exchange brings together thought leaders around the world from cross disciplines that represent industry, education, research, technology, government and conservation. Guide to Starting a Business in Georgia – by Ben McMakin, SCORE volunteer

Posted by mysavannah on February 1, 2011

GUIDE TO STARTING A BUSINESS IN GEORGIA

The following are suggested steps to take in order to start a business. These steps are being listed in the
sequential order that is suggested you follow:

1. Decide on the business structure or legal entity for your business. Most common forms of business structure are sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability company (LLC), small business corporation or regular corporation. You should discuss the features of each type of legal entity with your legal advisor.

An overview of this topic is available at http://sos.georgia.gov/corporations/
legal_entity.pdf

2. If you decide on a limited liability company, small business corporation or regular corporation, you will need to register your business’ name with the Georgia Secretary of State (SOS) office. Decide on a name for your business and then contact the (404/656-2817) to see if any other entity is using this name. If not, then you can reserve the name by filing a “Name Reservation Request” form with the SOS. There is a $25 nonrefundable fee to reserve a name.

a. You can obtain the reservation request form at http://www.sos.ga.gov/acrobat/
Corporations/name%20reservation%20form%2008.pdf

b. You can reserve your name on line at https://corp.sos.state.ga.us/business/
namereservation/default.aspx?XID=60d57780-f29e-4475-99a8-70189329b00b
. A $25 filing fee applies to on-line filings as well.

3. After deciding on your business structure and name for your business, you will need to prepare or have someone prepare your business formation documents. Again, you need to consult with your legal advisor on the types of documents required.

a. An overview of this topic is available at http://www.sos.ga.gov/corporations/ and
http://sos.georgia.gov/corporations/filing_procedures.htm

4. Once the business formation documents have been prepared you need to and file the
appropriate registration form and business formation documents with the SOS.

a. You can file your domestic corporation on-line at
http://www.sos.ga.gov/corporations/new_entity_notice.htm

b. A partnership or limited liability partnership may not be filed on-line.

1

5. Contact the local government office, i.e. county office or city hall, etc., in the location where your business will be located to see if you need to register your business. Sole propriortors are not required to register with the state but all other business must register with the state. Partnerships, LLPs, LLCs and all types of corporations may need to register with the local government where their business is located.

6. Apply for a federal Tax Identification Number (TIN) with the IRS. This can be done at no cost. If your business is a sole proprietorship you will use your SSN in lieu of a TIN and thus you do not need to apply for a TIN.

a. You may apply for a TIN on-line at https://sa2.www4.irs.gov/modiein/individual/
index.jsp
. The IRS will assign you a number immediately while you are still on-line. Be sure you can access a printer while on-line so that you can print out a copy of your TIN. You can use this TIN as verification of your business when completing other business formation tasks.

b. For other IRS matters go on-lime to http://www.irs.gov/

You will need to submit a “State Tax Registration” application (Form CRF-002) with the State of Georgia to register your business. This will also automatically register you for a Georgia sales tax number and withholding tax number as well as other tax registration numbers that might be applicable for the type of business you will operate.

a. For a list of Georgia tax forms go to https://etax.dor.ga.gov/ctr/formsreg.aspx

b. For instructions on filing Form CRF-002 go to https://etax.dor.ga.gov/ctr/
TSD_State_Tax_Registration_Application_Instructions.pdf

c. To obtain Form CRF-002 go to https://etax.dor.ga.gov/ctr/
TSD_State_Tax_Registration_Application_CRF002.pdf

a. * For assistance call Taxpayer Registration at 877.423.6711 or go to Georgia Department of Revenue at https://etax.dor.ga.gov/

8. Open a bank account in the name of your business. You will need to provide the bank with identify information about yourself, i.e. driver’s license number and SSN, etc., as well as proof that your business has been registered with the city, county or state. SCORE strongly recommends that you keep your business finances separate from your personal finances and thus the need for a business bank account.

including:
