DOG HIT ON ABERCORN THIS MORNING – trying to find the owner – Pit Mix, Grey & White with black collar

Posted by mysavannah on September 30, 2010

Dog on Abercorn this morning that had been hit by a car, and was trying to drag himself out of the road. Other cars were just swerving around him, but no one stopped until my friend did. He was able to pick up the dog and get him into his car.
The dog is a pit or pit mix, grey & white, intact male, approx 60lbs, very sweet, very mild mannered. He allowed my friend and the AC officer to handle him with no problem despite the certain pain he was in. He was wearing a black collar with silver dog bones all the way around (he must have an owner!) There was apparently tags as the hook was still attached to the collar but the tags must have been lost when he was hit. He was not microchipped.

He was found on Abercorn this morning about 8am near Lowes and Home Depot in the Windsor Forest area. He was found dragging his hind legs, but once out of danger, he is able to move his legs, so he is not paralized, but the extent of his injuries is not known.

He will be at Chatham Animal Control, case#100927022
phone# (912)351-6750

The vet he was taken to is Dr Berwick phone# (912)232-4249

Savannah Hardscape’s Monthly Column in the Real Estate Section: Stone, The original ‘green’ building material

Posted by mysavannah on September 27, 2010

Top Five Most Popular Stones Used on Residential Construction & Home
Improvement Projects

www.savannahhardscapes.com

Stone is the original “Green” building material. This
abundant natural resource is very durable, naturally beautiful and
available in a full spectrum of colors, textures, and shapes. Stone is
a re-useable product and many homeowners are choosing to use reclaimed
stone in their new or remodeling projects. There is a natural stone
option for every project, every imagination, and every budget. Some of
the most popular are listed below.

1. Travertine, limestone and marble: These stone cousins are great for
interior and exterior applications. Honed and tumbled finishes will
add a classic finish on flooring, walls and backsplashes. Take them
outside in a tumbled finish for a non-slip, cool to the touch patio,
pool deck or even a driveway.

2. Bluestone: This slate product quarried in Pennsylvania and New York
is very different from the imported slates that arrive from India and
China. Good quality bluestone is resistant to flaking and shaling and
does not typically need to be sealed. Bluestone can be used in many
forms with a range of available finishes. The irregular flagstone or
pattern flagstone with a natural cleft texture can be mortar-set or
dry-laid for patios, walkways, stepping stones and driveways.

3. Granite: Every where you look in Savannah, you see granite curbing
and cobblestones. Travel up the eastern seaboard and you will see
granite cobblestone streets in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and New
York City. This hardy, classic stone is a perfect complement to
traditional and contemporary architecture. A popular and versatile
stone, granite can be made into honed and polished tiles and
countertops.

4. Coral Stone and Coquina: Ancient oceans full of aquatic life were
long ago formed into fossil and shell filled limestone. Cut from huge
blocks of stone that are now well above sea level, coral stone and
coquina is a perfect material for pool decks, patios and architectural
elements. Coquina contains a huge array of shell and small animal
fossils in each tile while Coral Stone contains a range of preserved
coral fossils. The blocks of stone can be carved into anything you can
imagine; fireplace surrounds, balustrade systems, columns, tables,
benches, urns and more.

5. Midwestern Limestone: Limestone quarried in the Midwestern United
States is a beautiful addition to most any architecture. The first
quarry in Indiana opened in 1827 and the area has been producing stone
for buildings across the country ever since. The Empire State
Building, Chicago’s Tribune Building, and the Biltmore Estate in
Asheville, NC are clad in limestone. The limestone from this area is
very consistent in color and texture, making it an ideal product for
historic restoration as well as new construction. The large blocks of
stone can be fabricated into door and window-surrounds, cladding,
sills, steps, column and wall caps, and pediments.

Stone has been used for centuries for creating beautiful buildings,
streets, walls, flooring, and art. Savannah’s prized River
Street ramps and walls were constructed with ballast stones from
incoming ships. The still-standing buildings and walls along the
street were made from local brick and ballast stone, creating
beautiful and, obviously, long-lasting structures. In addition to
those stones mentioned above, River Rock, Field Stone, and Clay Brick
pavers are perfect for most any residential project—each
offering a different look and color palette.

Brothers, William and Jonathan Rhangos, are co-owners of Savannah
Hardscapes. Savannah Hardscapes is a local company that specializes in
the sale and installation of stone, pavers, brick, stucco, mosaics,
antique materials, fountains, fireplaces, outdoor furniture and
architectural elements for residential, commercial and public projects
throughout the southeast. www.savannahhardscapes.com 843-784-6060

Savannah Hardscapes paved Ellis Square, Johnson Square, Forsyth Park Cafe area, Beautfort Waterfront

Historical Bricks Pave the Way for a Sustainable Future; One Local Company Lays Foundations for Tourists and Locals Alike

www.savannahhardscapes.com

(SAVANNAH, GA) Historical Bricks Pave the Way for a Sustainable Future: The historic ambiance throughout downtown Savannah’s numerous tourist attractions and varied walking paths draws an increased number of tourists to the City each year. Savannah Hardscapes has been involved in a number of decorative outdoor installations using natural and sustainable materials throughout the downtown area including Forsyth Park, the hardscape surrounding City Hall, and the World War II monument on River Street, Ellis Square at City Market, and Johnson Square. Savannah Hardscapes—a Savannah company importing and distributing products globally—specializes in the sale and installation of stone, pavers, brick, stucco, mosaics, antique materials, fountains, fireplaces, outdoor furniture and architectural elements for both residential, commercial and public projects throughout the southeast. http://www.SavannahHardscapes.com 843.784.6060

Historical Bricks Pave the Way for a Sustainable Future; One Local Company Lays Foundations for Tourists and Locals Alike

(SAVANNAH, GA) Taken a stroll through downtown Savannah, lately? Enchanted Oaks, cobblestone streets, elaborate mansions, and historic squares make Savannah a very special place. Founded in the 1700’s, downtown Savannah is made up primarily of brick and stone, with streets that are laid out in a perfect grid, demonstrating early colonial city planning.
The art of masonry can be seen throughout downtown Savannah and is certainly part of its unspoken appeal. The beautiful stone work involved in constructing these downtown hardscapes is significant, and gives Savannah its distinct essence.

Savannah Hardscapes has been involved in a variety of public and private historic renovations and decorative outdoor installations throughout the downtown area.

Co-owners and brothers, William and Jonathan Rhangos, who grew up in the downtown Forsyth Park area have a vested interest in maintaining the look and feel of the City. “We are passionate about the use of materials which reflect the look and feel of the original structures,” says Jonathan. “Using historic materials in downtown construction projects in order to create and maintain correct interpretation is important.”

Some noteworthy downtown renovation projects that Savannah Hardscapes has been involved with include Forsyth Park, City Hall, the World War II monument on River Street, as well as Ellis and Johnson Squares.

The 22 Savannah squares, which are small park-like areas shaded by mossy oaks, are a downtown staple. Savannah Hardscapes laid the high design stone surfacing at the newly raised Ellis Square located next to City Market. “Interactive fountains and an artistic hardscape of natural stone make Ellis the most progressive of squares, adding a contemporary vibe and making it a current hot spot for tourists and locals alike,” says William.

Recently renovated historic Johnson Square is one of Savannah’s first and largest constructed squares. In order to stay true the original style of this significant space the renovation involved the utilization of Bluestone and Granite along with Clay paver walkways.
The City Hall sidewalk project also includes Bluestone throughout the surrounding hardscape. Bluestone which is an organic stone derived of sandstone and quartz crystal is a key element featured throughout this area which has historical precedence dating back over one hundred years.

“Bluestone pavers are visually appealing pieces of natural stone ranging in color from blue-grey and green-grey to lilac,” says William. “These muted tones make up a pleasant color palette and blend well with Savannah’s current structures and scenery.”
Bluestone, along with the use of Savannah Grey Bricks—the large reddish-brown bricks found throughout the historic district—are the elements which combine to give Savannah’s signature look.

Savannah Hardscapes is currently working on a couple of River Street projects, which include the replacement of slate along the strip and the enhancement of the World War II monument.
River Street—a water front cobblestone drive of old cotton warehouses and stone buildings—is within walking distance of City Market. These areas feature an eclectic and fun collection of restaurants, clubs, art galleries, and souvenir shops and are the most frequented spots among visitors who come to experience historic Savannah.

The recently renovated Forsyth Park—a 30 acre park established in the 1840s containing a Confederate monument, magnificent water fountains, a large lawn where locals play and lounge, and now a popular café with outdoor seating—is a local favorite. Savannah Hardscapes facilitated the decorative outdoor installation of pavers and bricks during the large scale Forsyth renovation project, adding to the character and beauty there.
The Historic Savannah Foundation’s long standing preservation activity has ensured that the historical appeal and character of the City be maintained and enhanced. Since the use of masonry pavers is historical in itself, the art of masonry is central to the design, construction and renovation of structures within the downtown area.

Part of the fabric of masonry construction in the area, Savannah Grey Bricks are commonly used in residential renovations to repair and create consistent looks along walk ways, walls and exterior structures such as patio gardens—all common features within the fashionable Georgian style homes lining the streets.

Many of these structures are also designed sustainably through the re-use of Savannah Grey Bricks in order to maintain the quality and look of old. Using reclaimed materials is a central aspect of green building practices.
According to the Rhangos’, Savannah Hardscapes works with a network of sources to locate and retrieve reclaimed bricks of many varieties which only become available when old buildings and streets are torn down.

Downtown has many special public spots to enjoy. Savannah’s private spaces, however, which include historic residences and spectacular patio gardens, are downtown’s secret gems.
To capture the true essence of Savannah, visitors stroll the squares where they discover over 1,700 restored homes, museums, galleries, and shops worthy of their attention, accompanied by a backdrop of Spires from various colonial period churches which punctuate the skyline.
Residents maintain extraordinary living spaces here and sustainability is often an element they are looking to incorporate into their renovation.

“Savannah Hardscapes regularly works with clients in the area to create a design, or modify and suggest materials for the existing structures,” notes William. “Private residences such as these contribute to the overall beauty of Savannah.”

“We are proud to be part of the continued restoration of this area using sustainable and natural products that have been used in the past,” says Jonathan. “Part of our passion and intention from the beginning has been to educate people about these natural and sustainable products and bring them back onto the market while working to maintain the beauty of a city we love.”

The historic ambiance throughout Savannah’s numerous tourist attractions and varied walking paths draws an increased number of tourists to the City each year.

“It is great to move about the city and see so many people enjoying these spaces,” says William, “it really makes this work that much more rewarding.”

Humane Society Executive Director Lynn Gensamer to Speak at Nov. 1 Exchange Club Event

(SAVANNAH, GA) Lynn Gensamer, Executive Director of the Humane Society for Greater Savannah, will be the guest speaker at the Exchange Club of Savannah’s weekly luncheon on Monday, November 1 at noon. Gensamer’s presentation will focus on animal welfare in the Savannah community. Approximately 100 people, including local lawyers, judges, accountants, investment professionals, sales and management professionals, and retirees, are expected to attend.

During her presentation, Gensamer will discuss shocking figures about animal suffering and overpopulation, including the following disturbing facts:

· An estimated four to six million dogs and cats are euthanized in shelters each year

· More animals die as a result of euthanasia than all other diseases combined

· One female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 cats in just seven years

· One female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in just six years

In addition, Gensamer will address common misconceptions about the Humane Society for Greater Savannah, its relationship to the Humane Society of the United States, sources of funding and more.

“The Humane Society for Greater Savannah is an independent, unaffiliated 501 ©3 charitable organization dedicated to serving pets and people in our community,” Gensamer says. “We appreciate the opportunity afforded us by The Exchange Club to speak about animal welfare issues and concerns in Greater Savannah and the role of the Humane Society.”

The Exchange Club of Savannah meets every Monday at the Coastal Empire Fairgrounds at 4801 Meding Street in Savannah. Lunch is served at noon, and the program begins promptly at 12:30 p.m. Non-members may attend but seating is limited. To RSVP, please contact Tim Beers at Tim.Beers@edwardjones.com. For more information on the Exchange Club, please visit http://www.savannahexchange.org.

(SAVANNAH, GA) Legendary University of Georgia Football Coach Vince Dooley will be the Guest Speaker at the Sunday Brunch Fundraiser for the Fourth Annual Savannah Book Festival, Sunday, February 20, 2011, savannahbookfestival.org

Posted by mysavannah on September 13, 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(SAVANNAH, GA) Legendary University of Georgia Football Coach Vince Dooley will be the Guest Speaker at Sunday Brunch Fundraiser for the Fourth Annual Savannah Book Festival, Sunday, February 20, 2011.

The 2011 Savannah Book Festival welcomes former University of Georgia athletic director and football coach, Vince Dooley, as their Sunday Brunch speaker. Dooley will be discussing his newest book, “Vince Dooley’s Garden – The Horticultural Journey of a Football Coach” on Sunday, February 20, 2011, 11am to 1pm in the Chatham Club on the 14th floor at the DeSoto Hilton Hotel, 15 East Liberty Street, Savannah, GA.

“Vince Dooley’s Garden – The Horticultural Journey of a Football Coach” is a 160-page personal journal illustrated by renowned Georgia artist Steve Penley. In his book, both diary and travelogue, Dooley displays the same enthusiasm and dedication to the horticultural field as he gave to his 25-year-plus coaching career.

Football fans and plant enthusiasts alike will enjoy this open and personal story by one of Georgia’s greatest sports figures, while Penley’s pen-and-ink illustrations bring to life the gardens and plants around the world that have so inspired Dooley. Together, words and pictures form a visible manifestation of how the former coach has combined his taste for impressionist art with his love of gardens.

Whether reading or simply flipping through the pictures, even the most rabid Bulldog enthusiasts may find themselves catching Dooley’s horticultural bug – a devotion that no amount of bad weather can hold back, according to the author. “It never rains on the practice field or in the garden,” Dooley writes.

Now in its fourth season, Georgia’s literary event of the year remains free for all to attend. Visit savannahbookfestival.org to plan your trip. Special deals with local hotels and tourist venues are featured and the website is frequently updated.

The Savannah Book Festival’s mission is to promote reading, writing and civil conversation. It is now a significant event in both the literary and southeastern USA calendars, with a new date this year: February 18-20, 2011 – President’s Day weekend. The Savannah Book Festival Inc. is an independent non-profit corporation led by a volunteer board of directors. It is committed to remaining a free and open-to-the-public experience to celebrate the written word and its role in improving the human experience.

For more information or to sponsor a table for 10 at $750, contact Lisa Parker Fort at the Savannah Book Festival at (912) 385-0575; lisa@savannahbookfestival.org; or 3025 Bull St., Suite 249, Savannah, GA 31405, http://www.savannahbookfestival.org.
