Posted by mysavannah on January 31, 2010

Members of SavFADA (Savannah Fine Arts Dealers Association) will host a Valentine’s ArtHop to support the Savannah Children’s Choir on Friday, February 12 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Each of the participating galleries will feature donated artwork available for silent auction. In addition, 10% of any other gallery sales benefits the Choir. Each gallery will also host a wine and cheese reception, with additional sweets provided by Wright Square Café and Lulu’s Chocolate Bar.

Participants may park at the Whitaker Street Parking garage at Ellis Square, and should they bid on or purchase a piece in any of the five galleries, their parking will be validated, courtesy of the City of Savannah Parking Services.

Savannah Fun Tours will provide transportation on a scheduled loop to help ensure guests have a chance to visit each gallery.

Finally, the top bidders on each silent auction piece will be invited to an exclusive reception in a newly restored private home immediately following the event. There they can pick up their art and chat with other art patrons while enjoying a reception catered by Café Zeum.

Participating galleries include Bryan Stovall Gallery & Studio, Chroma Gallery, Friedman’s Fine Art, the Grand Bohemian Gallery at the Mansion and Ray Ellis Gallery.

Artists generously donating their work include Michael Carnahan, Ray Ellis, Julio Garcia, Doug Grier, Scott Griffin, Kiril Jeliazkov, Peter Keil, Marcus Kenney, Jan Clayton Pagratis, Lori Keith Robinson, Jean Claude Roy, Cedric Smith, Dan Smith, Bryan Stovall, Tiffani Taylor and Gerome Temple.

“We’re thrilled to have the support of the fine art community for the Savannah Children’s Choir,” comments SCC Board of Trustees member Josh Keller. “The members of SavFADA, the participating artists, downtown restaurants and Savannah Fun Tours, not to mention the City of Savannah’s Parking Services have put together an amazingly creative way to support the Choir, whose mission is uniting Savannah’s children through the power of song,” comments SCC Board of Trustees member Jamey Espina.

SAVANNAH HUMANE SOCIETY

Posted by mysavannah on January 23, 2010

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Humane Society of Savannah / Chatham will host their 4th Annual Dog Lovers Walk
Fundraiser on Saturday, February 27, 2010 from 8:30am – 11:00am at The Landings.
It is a dog walk aimed at raising awareness and funds for our community’s homeless animals. Proceeds from pledges help the Humane Society for Greater Savannah care for the 3,600 animals entrusted each year to the shelter.

http://humanesocietysav.org

Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. at the Messiah Lutheran Church parking lot behind the village and the walk begins at 9:00. This year’s event features an agility/obedience training demonstration, microchipping, nail clipping, pet portraits and refreshments.

There is no registration fee or minimum amount to raise! And you can walk with or without a dog.

Participants can gather pledges or, even easier, set up a fundraising webpage at http://www.firstgiving.com/hssc and email it to friends, family, co-workers – anyone you can think of. Remember, the more you raise, the more you help the animals and… there will be prizes for the top three fundraisers.

Are you affiliated with a business? Sponsor a program ad! Ad space in our event program booklet is available in three sizes: Full page – 5.5″ x 8″ for $200; Half page – 5.5″ x 4″ for $100 and business card size for $75. Just send us your artwork or logo in pdf format — whatever you’d like to appear — and we’ll make sure you are included. Last year’s event was attended by over 150 dog lovers!

Questions?? Call Nancy Richards at 354-9515, x114 for further information. Hope to see you there!

Savannah Tree Foundation announces new Executive Director Promotes Adrienn Mendonca from within Step forward for 27‐year old organization

Posted by mysavannah on January 23, 2010

(Savannah, GA)—The President of the Board of Directors for the Savannah
Tree Foundation, Diane Houston, is proud to announce the promotion of Ms.
Adrienn Mendonca, Savannah Tree Foundation’s current Operations Director,
into the position of Executive Director for the Savannah Tree Foundation.

Ms. Mendonca assumes the new position effective January 1, 2010. Goals for
the position include reaching out to create new community partnerships and
establishing a sustainable organizational structure for the 27‐year old urban &
community forestry nonprofit.

Mendonca currently serves on the board of the Historic Sites & Monuments Commission at the
Metropolitan Planning Commission and is the volunteer coordinator for the Peacock Guild of the
Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home. She has served on the Cultural Affairs Commission for the City
of Savannah, the Traditional Arts Advisory Committee for the Southern Arts Federation, and was
previously the state folklorist at the Georgia Council for the Arts. Mendonca has a master’s degree in
historic preservation from the Savannah College of Art & Design and a bachelor’s degree from Tulane
University.

“I look forward to continuing my career in conservation,” said Mendonca. “Whether it’s natural,
cultural or historical in nature, I’m interested in ensuring we conserve the best of what has come
before. When we honor the past we situate ourselves effectively for the present.”

“If any clear lesson from the recent climate change talks at Copenhagen can be articulated, it’s that
no local effort is too small to have an impact on a global scale,” said Mendonca. “We can make a
difference right here in Savannah, right now. If every household here committed to planting one
shade tree on private property in 2010, each tree would help absorb one metric ton of carbon dioxide
in 40 year’s time. That’s 2,200 pounds per tree, or roughly 113 million pounds of carbon dioxide.
That’s significant.”

Cash & Carry Auto Salvage Yard on Staley Avenue raising money for American Red Cross’s Haiti relief effort.

Posted by mysavannah on January 22, 2010

(SAVANNAH, GA) January 22, 2010 – Savannah auto salvage yard owner Kenny Grainger is raising money for the American Red Cross’s Haiti relief effort. From today through Jan. 31 all proceeds from customers $1 yard entrance fee will be donated to the charity.

Local Auto Salvage Yard Raises Money for Red Cross’s Haiti Relief

(SAVANNAH, GA) Savannah auto salvage yard owner Kenny Grainger is giving Savannah-area residents an easy way to help people suffering from the effects of the Jan. 12 earthquake and resulting humanitarian crisis in Haiti. From now through January 31st, Grainger is donating all of the $1 door fees customers pay to enter the Cash-N-Carry Auto Salvage Yard on Staley Avenue to the American Red Cross’s Haiti relief effort.

“My family and I are deeply moved by the images of suffering and hardship we have seen coming from Haiti,” Grainger said. “The estimated 200,000 people killed equals roughly three-fourths of the population of Chatham County. Our donation is a small thing for us, but could make a world of difference in a place where 80 percent of people live on less than $2 a day.”

In addition to the collected admission fees, Grainger has also placed donation buckets in the customer service area near the cash registers, so customers may make additional donations if they choose. The public is welcome to donate even if they are not shopping for car parts. The goal is to raise at least $5,000 by the end of the month.

Grainger is requesting the help of local media outlets to spread the word about this effort. To schedule an interview with Grainger or a video or photo shoot at the salvage yard, please contact Michael Jordan of Carriage Trade Public Relations at 912-713-8411.

John Isner – Tail 2009 USTA $50,000 Savannah Challenger Participant
Wins the 2010 Heinekin Open in Auckland, New Zealand

Savannah Challenger participant started the year by winning the Heineken Open in New Zealand on January 16, 2010.

http://www.savannahchallenger.com/

The victory catapulted Isner into the top 30 for the first time, and also allowed him to surpass Sam Querry to become the #2 ranked American for the first time, behind only Andy Roddick, in the Australian Open. Isner has stated that one of his goals is to finish the year ranked in the top 20 and given the latest results, it looks as though he may well reach his goal.

Isner has also been named as a practice partner for the US team in the 2010 Davis Cup season. He will will likely qualify to play singles for the US Davis Cup team for the first time in his career due to the absence of Andy Roddick and James Blake.

John has graduated from the Challenger Circuit, but almost certainly, all the Savannians that watched him play in the 2009 Savannah Challenger wish him well on the ATP Tour.

Raise Money By Metal Recycling

Thinking about tossing that old washing machine? Think again. That washing machine could raise funds for your group or organization.

Appliances are just one of many recyclable items accepted by Newell Recycling, one of the largest recyclers and processors of recycled metals in the Southeast.

“We encourage schools and organizations that are interested in raising money to fund their projects to start a recycling drive by going out and collecting recyclable metals and bringing them to Newell to sell,” says Bobby Triesch, vice president and director of Ferrous Operations.

Newell will pay per pound for any ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal brought to one of its locations. Recyclable goods range from objects as small as aluminum cans to large-scale items such as appliances, automobiles and farm equipment.

Drop-off locations in and near the Savannah area include the Garden City facility at 100 Sonny Perdue Drive and a facility in Statesboro at 9013 US Hwy 301 South. Additional Newell Recycling facilities are located in Augusta, Doraville, East Point, Elberton, Lithia Springs, and Macon, Georgia, and Allendale, South Carolina.

Another way for organizations to raise funds by recycling is to participate in Newell’s Cash for Cans program, an initiative aimed at helping organizations, schools, clubs and the community raise funds while simultaneously helping the environment. Newell provides participants with printed materials and specially designed collection trailers for the duration of their aluminum can drive. Once the trailer is full, Newell weighs the contents and pays the participating organizations for their cans.

Whether participating in Cash for Cans or collecting items on their own and bringing them to one of Newell’s seven feeder yards, organizations do much more than just raise funds. The items are all recycled and re-used, saving valuable precious natural resources.

The recycling process starts with the items that are collected at the Newell feeder yards. The metal parts are transported to one of the company’s three shredder plants in Savannah or Atlanta. Items dropped off at the feeder sites in Garden City, Statesboro, Augusta, Allendale and Macon are all transported to the Savannah Shredder.

The 6,000 hp shredder plants simultaneously process, separate and sort the recyclable metals down to the smallest particles. The shredders are capable of grinding the equivalent of 170 cars per hour into fist-sized pieces.

Once the items are shredded down, the metals are then cleaned and made ready for re-use and transported by truck, rail and ship to smelters, mills and foundries around the world.

Newell Recycling has received many accolades and awards over the years, including being named one of Atlanta’s 50 Fastest-Growing Private Companies and one of Atlanta’s Top 10 Fastest-Growing Women-Owned Firms by the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Newell Recycling was also featured on The Discovery Channel show “Mega Machines.”

For more information on how to raise funds by recycling and to learn more about Newell Recycling, please visit www.newellrecycling.com.
