RENSSELAER / RPI – Thank you for your LEADERSHIP in making RPI a smoke-free campus

Posted by mysavannah on November 30, 2009

Subject: Institute-Wide Smoking Policy

To: The Rensselaer Community
From: William N. Walker, Vice President,
Strategic Communications and External Relations
Date: November 30, 2009
Re: Institute-Wide Smoking Policy

As we continue the commitment of the Institute to its development as an
increasingly health-conscious organization, effective July 1, 2010,
Rensselaer will join more than 360 U.S. colleges and universities as a
smoke-free institution.

It will be important for the members of the Rensselaer community to
support one another during this significant change in behavior and
habit. The Office of the Provost, the Division of Human Resources, and
the Division of Student Life will work together to develop a transition
plan to help promote the benefits of this change for all members of the
Rensselaer community. They also will identify educational resources for
our faculty, staff, and students regarding the benefits of a smoke-free
institution, and will outline support services for those who may need
assistance.

Research by the American Cancer Society shows that a significant
percentage of college smokers begin to smoke regularly at or after age
19. We believe that by becoming a smoke-free institution, we will set an
example that will encourage the Rensselaer community to embrace a spirit
of healthy living, learning, and working.

Additional communications from the Office of the Provost and the
Divisions of Human Resources and Student Life will be forthcoming in the
near future.

A Teenager’s Guide to Georgia Law – LECTURE

Posted by mysavannah on November 22, 2009

J. Tom Morgan, Ignorance of No Defense, A Teenager’s Guide to Georgia Law

Thursday, January 14th

7:00 PM, Jelks Auditorium

No cost

Savannah Country Day School will host a free community forum on Thursday, January 14th with author J. Tom Morgan. Mr. Morgan is the author of Ignorance is No Defense, a practical, convenient guide for teenagers and their parents on the law in Georgia. The community forum will be packed with useful information regarding the law and its consequences and will help teenagers make safe, informed choices.

Bio: Mr. Morgan is a nationally recognized attorney and expert on the prosecution of crimes against children and has appeared on CNN’s Talk Back Live, the Oprah Winfrey Show, Court TV, the Today Show, and 48 Hours. He served as the District Attorney of DeKalb County for twelve years and was the first prosecutor in Georgia to specialize in the prosecution of crimes against children. Mr. Morgan has spoken to tens of thousands of teenagers and parents regarding Georgia laws that impact young people and has listened to their stories. The insights he has gained from speaking with teenagers, as well as his experience as a prosecutor and private attorney, inspired him to write Ignorance is No Defense, A Teenager’s Guide to Georgia Law. Realizing that many teenagers often do not fully understand the law and its consequences, Mr. Morgan explains Georgia laws in a readable, informative way using real-life examples. Ignorance is No Defense aspires to help teenagers avoid situations in which they violate the law or are hurt by others who violate the law.

Quote: “If our criminal laws treat teenagers as adults, our society has a moral obligation to educate out teenagers – and we need to do it now.”

- J.Tom Morgan, Author of Ignorance is No Defense

HOMELESS IN SAVANNAH

Posted by mysavannah on November 20, 2009

DATE: Friday, November 20, 2009

TIME: 6:00 p.m.

LOCATION: 2414 Bull Street

EVENT: “A Night in a Box” (National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week)

An African proverb says, “I hear; I forget. I see; I remember. I do; I understand.”

Friday at 6:00 p.m. a group of people will leave the comfort of home “to do” homelessness in order to gain understanding of it. Each will construct their personal “cardboard condominium” in a homeless camp within a fenced parking lot near the intersection of Drayton and Maupas. They do not seek discomfort. They seek understanding. They want to comprehend homelessness.

After camp is set up, participants will tour Old Savannah City Mission, attend a Gospel service and enjoy dinner with friends and neighbors, i.e. the homeless. This will not be an “us and them” evening.

Back at the camp around 8:30 p.m. “experts” on homelessness will speak as they sit around a drum-contained fire on the Mission’s parking lot near the corner of Drayton and Maupas. These authorities on homelessness are men and women who are homeless or were recently homeless. They will share how they became homeless and how they survive being homeless.

“A Night in a Box” can make a mega paradigm shift in understanding homelessness. It will open their eyes to the reality that anyone may become homeless, especially in today’s tough economic times.

For more information, call Jim Lewis at 655-5118 or drop by the Mission.

The Mission’s 12th Annual Day of Great Thanksgiving is scheduled for Saturday, November 21 in Forsyth Park. Volunteers have prepared 480 turkeys and will assist in serving 7,000 delicious smoked turkey dinners to our community’s hungry and homeless. Meals will be served continuously from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

The Old Savannah City Mission, Savannah’s Five Star Gospel Rescue Mission is a local 501(c)(3) charity meeting local needs with local resources. The Mission is located at 2414 Bull Street near the intersection of 40th Street and Bull Street. The Mission preaches the Gospel, feeds the hungry, shelters the homeless, rehabilitates the addict and restores the ex-offender. All services are provided free and without one dime of government funding. The Mission has been serving the hungry and homeless 365 days a year since 1997.

WATER

Posted by mysavannah on November 10, 2009

(USA) A bold — yet simple — water challenge is being launched at Greenbuild. The RehydrateUS initiative, founded by sustainability guru Tommy Linstroth of Savannah based Melaver, Inc, calls for home and business owners to reduce their water consumption through three easy steps –

replace existing toilets with ultra-high efficiency toilets, and switch out standard faucet aerators and showerheads with water efficient models.

These three steps can reduce household or business water consumption by 30-60%, and will result in saving 1 billion gallons of water per day. The RehydrateUS Initiative is supported by a website, http://www.rehydrateus.org, which provides an easy to use calculator and a pledge form for you to use in making your commitment.

Tommy Linstroth is and available for interviews on the billion gallon challenge. For more information on The RehydrateUS Initiative, visit:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Artists invited to Paint Outside in Telfair Square in conjunction with the 2009 Telfair Art Fair.

(SAVANNAH, GA) This year, the Telfair Art Fair marks fifteen years of art promotion throughout the city of Savannah.

Local artists are invited to share in the celebration of the Art Fair’s fifteenth anniversary. Bring your canvases, easels, pencils, and paints. Create original pieces, along with other artists.

The Telfair Art Fair is Saturday, November 14th, 2009 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sunday, November 15th, 2009 at 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Outdoor artists are invited to paint during these hours.

Outdoor painting got popular during the impressionist movement, which included the work of Monet, Renoir, and Cezanne. At the time, outdoor painters defined innovation. Each artist captures a “fleeting moment” as they work, never really grasping the exact replica of what they are observing.
Outdoor painting in Paris is one of the top tourist attractions in their city.

Artist’s Square at Telfair Square in Savannah, Georgia will officially kick off the first day of spring 2010, where artists will be invited to paint original art 7 days a week, as a way to show case Savannah’s talent and beauty.

Posted by mysavannah on November 2, 2009

(SAVANNAH, GA) Sycamore at The Stadium: Historic Grayson Stadium is
hosting the 7th annual Sycamore at The Stadium FREE baseball camp for
boys & girls ages 8-12. The Sycamore Church has rallied 40 volunteers
from its congregation and the Savannah business community to make this
a totally FREE event for the kids. The two day camp begins Saturday
November 14th at 8:30am and goes until 1pm; On Sunday camp will start
up at 1:30pm and end at 4:30pm; lunch will be provided both days by
Chick-Fil-A. The kids will learn from coaches with major league, minor
league, semi-pro, and college experience. Many generous local sponsors
have made it possible for campers to receive free baseball hats,
t-shirts and Bibles. The Julia Bass Teschke Foundation (which

contributes the largest financial support for the weekend camp. Before
